Theme of last weekend: 🚨 ALERT 🚨 Look at that confident little dood! Exteriors have absolutely haunted us since we started trialing. While we were killing it at all the other elements, we only ever Q-ed 1/6 tries in exteriors by the end of 2023. It was such a distracting environment. Well, NO MORE! 🥇We did it! Sumi finished his Scentwork Novice title by clearing 2 exterior searches this weekend and we got a great start in our Advanced classes. He kept great focus, had clear alerts, worked so methodically, and even went with the flow when his handler was surprised by water buried hides. A reminder to all to read the rulebook when moving up classes 😂 We Q-ed 7 of 8 runs (AMAZING) and he surprised us with his first FIRST placement ever in Advanced Interiors! I will forever treasure this blue ribbon. Swipe for our winning run where he casually saunters over to that second hide like a boss - human finally got on the @gopro wagon. We tried something new this week! We tried out FastCAT as a sport. Fable had a lot of fun both chasing the lure and becoming best friends forever with every stranger who released him at the start line. 🤦🏻♀️😂 I was on the fence about this. I sent in the entry two months ago, and I was ready to go home at the drop of a hat if needed - if he was getting overexcited, if he was getting mouthy, if the other dogs were acting wild, etc. But he handled the busy environment super well. Not the fastest run times but I suspect that’s because he was too busy being friends with his releaser to run right when the lure started moving. One man told me Fable turned back around and gave him a kiss before running. A lot of fun was had and he brought his new friends a lot of joy as well.

Hellions enjoyed a productive weekend doing AKC Scentwork with the Merrimac Dog Training Club. Kita & Kai combined to Q in 21 out of 24 elements with 19 placements, including 13 first place finishes between them. On Saturday, Kita finished her Advanced Elite titles in Container and Exterior earning a 1st place in at least one trial of every element while also winning High In Trial for the Saturday AM Advanced trials. For her Exterior trial 2 on Sat, she moved up to Excellent for the first time and shocked us by picking up another 1st place. Kai earned his Novice Elite Exterior title on Saturday with two first place runs. He also earned a 1st and 2nd place in both of his Buried trials and a 3rd & 5th in Interior. On Sunday, Kita picked up her Advanced Interior title with another 1st place, then moved up to Excellent for trial 2 and earned a 3rd place in her first try in Excellent. She also picked up a 2nd and 3rd in Advanced Buried leaving her one more Advanced Buried Q from finishing her overall Advanced Elite title. Kai finished his Novice Interior Elite on Sunday with 1st & 4th place runs. Kai also moved up to Advanced Exterior on Sunday placing 1st in both trials. Despite the rain on Saturday and the cold windy day on Sunday, it was awesome to see both of our pups step up their nose game this weekend. When we pulled in they were most of the way through our time block so he ran back to back which resulted in a wider gap between his two runs. His first run was 8.639 and his second was 8.804 and our total points towards his BCAT should equal 142.669 from last year's one day trial and this weekend. Busy weekend competing with all 3 of my hooligans and they did so wonderful! Max earned his BCAT title with 102.97 points for the weekend added to his preexisting 48.84 for a total of 151.81! Rowan earned 65.19 points and was just happy to be there 😂 And Atlas earned 88.64 points - that boy is FAST. 1st dock practice of the season! 💦 🐾 Zodiak was so ready to get back on the dock! My best boy immediately flew off when it was our turn. He hit right at about 10 feet consistently, even matched his personal best of 12 feet at least once. I'm so pleased to see him pick up right where we left off last season! Our 1st trial of 2024 is coming up in 3 weeks! We will be in Bush, LA, for the annual Jazzy Paws Spring Extravaganza put on by The Boxer Club of Louisiana. Not only will Zodiak be doing NADD, but Everest will be competing in FastCAT there and taking her CGC test! It's a big event! Ban’s muscle injury healing process is going so well! She is cleared for moderate activity. We go for our next recheck in two weeks. This is a permanent injury that won’t ever heal 100%, but we are confident she can soon go back to active pet status! We just can no longer do high impact sports / activities. Millie’s trial face: 👁️👄👁️ Millie and I competed in Novice A obedience for the last time this weekend. In AKC sports, newcomers to the sport get one “A” dog and are eligible to compete in the “A”classes until you complete a title in that sport (it gets more complicated than this, but this is the TLDR). The “Novice A” dog is special. Not only to they spark a love for your sport (or sports) of choice, but they faithfully learn and grow alongside you. Making mistakes with the “A” dog is all part of the journey, which serves to make it more rewarding to learn how to overcome those mistakes and reach your goals. One goal my mentor pushed me to set was to earn a High in Trial (HIT) from the Novice A class. This weekend, Millie qualified twice and came home with two HITs! For a dog that I questioned if she would ever overcome her fear, I am so proud of how much she has grown. I owe a huge thank you to @julieyamane and the @caninelearningcenter for getting me started in Obedience and being there to help us compete in the sport! I also owe thanks to my mentor for helping me fine-tune my handling and the encouragement to train for a HIT. Have to brag on my crazies! We went to an AKC Fast CAT trial (100 yard sprint after a target/lire) for the first time this weekend. I told them both they were allowed to go full FERAL & they certainly did 😅 They both improved every time they ran & Hanky was putting in runs under 8 seconds & Jolene was in the low 8’s. Bucky got to do scent work this weekend! He earned his Novice exterior and container titles! Even though he decided to participate doesn’t mean he was overly enthusiastic to be running.
