A beautiful faux fur tailored coat inspired by middle/upperclass men’s overcoats in the 1930’s-40’s 🐿️ I made this for a project about tailoring made for trans-masculine people and trans men; I wanted to address the difficulty of finding properly fitted clothes as a trans man, especially tailored and high fashion clothes. I’ve been researching this issue for awhile and found a lot of trans-masc people are seriously struggling finding clothes that fit us. Although trans-masc people all have different bodies, a lot of us struggle with similar sizing issues with men’s clothes, for example, a lot of us are shorter than the average cis man but with a similar, or larger, waist and chest size. This means we are buying clothes that are a large men’s size to fit our chest and hips, but not our height, so our clothes are way too long. Along with other sizing issues, clothes fit us in the wrong places and don’t appeal the same way they do on a cis man. I’ll post some of the research soon on @charliesupastar ! I think it’s really interesting The kind of jackets I took inspiration from in the 30’s were made to accentuate the male body: a strong stance, big shoulders, small waist, “superman silhouette”. I’m really fascinated with clothes made to appear more “strong” and “masculine” and the way these clothes made men feel confident, luxurious, and powerful. And I ask the question - Do trans men get to feel luxurious? The fashion industry says no, in my opinion. I’m studying how tailored jackets are made and the thought that goes into the garment making to fit and accentuate a type of body, and make my own to fit my own body. I want to make clothes with sizing much closer to trans-masculine people’s sizing - whatever that means! I think to the average person, we’re fooled into believing the industry isn’t able to make custom sizes for people’s bodies who aren’t usually accounted for. This is not true, I tailored this coat to fit my own body perfectly, and I feel so beautiful and confident in it.
