❓️❓️Do you read historical fiction? What's your favorite era to read about? Miss Morgan's Book Brigade by Janet Skeslien Charles Ugh, this book! All the feels! I'm on an emotional roller-coaster! I loved Janet Skeslien Charles's The Paris Library, so I was so excited to hear about this book, and couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Right from the beginning, it drew me in. I love dual timelines, especially when one of them is in the 1980s. Totally rad! There's an American librarian, Jessie Carson (based on a real person!), who goes to the North of France during the Great War (WWI) to help with everything from books to chickens, and an archivist for the New York Public Library in the 1980s who discovers her and is dying to know what happened. Even though this book is set during wartime, and terrible things are happening, it is so full of hope. I love how books are used as a healing balm for loss. There are, of course, heart-rending moments in this book, but also a lot of heartwarming moments. The Silent ANZAC: The Legacy of HMAS AE2 ⚓ On this day in 1915, the Australian submarine HMAS AE2 was sunk in the Sea of Marmora during the Gallipoli Campaign. AE2, known as the "Silent ANZAC," achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Allied submarine to navigate the Dardanelles Straits and enter Turkish waters. Led by the brave Lieutenant Commander Henry Stoker, AE2 accomplished a remarkable feat by becoming the first Allied submarine to navigate the treacherous Dardanelles Straits and venture into Turkish waters. With a predominantly Australian crew, AE2 disrupted enemy shipping for days, making a significant impact on the battlefield. However, mechanical issues forced AE2 to surface, where it faced a fierce attack by the Turkish torpedo boat Sultanhisar on 30 April 1915. Despite their bravery, the crew was captured and endured the hardships of being prisoners of war. Today, we pay tribute to their courage and daring spirit. Latest work a customer wanted to do a first war officers impression of the Artists Rifles. I was supplied with a WWII officers tunic. The SD belt was sacrificed and cut open to be the fitted belt on the tunic (hence the ghost marks). Brass hooks were added and next will be moth damage repairs. The owner will be fitting leather football style buttons on its return to them. The regiment was established in 1859. The group was organised in London by Edward Sterling, an art student, and comprised various professional painters, musicians, actors, architects and others involved in creative endeavours; a profile it strove to maintain for some years. Finished retouching my grandfather's WWI army panoramic photo today. I left the boarders with tears and kept the sepia tone look of the original. But I closed up all the major rips and tears that ran through soldier's bodies and faces. I also tinted my grandfather so he would stand out a little among the 200 or so service men. Execution of a French soldier (or possibly a foreign spy) by firing squad, ca. 1915. . Today 107 years ago, on April 29, 1917, the French Army mutinies of 1917 began as French units began disobeying orders en masse. . On April 16, 1917, the French Army had launched their 'Nivelle Offensive' in the Second Battle of the Aisne, being named after the operation's brainchild, French Commander-in-Chief Nivelle, who promised the offensive would win the war "within 48 hours", with French casualties estimated at 10,000. . Due to several reasons, the offensive was a disaster as the French suffered 187,000 casualties in under a month, having only advanced 7 km - the German defenses standing firm on the 'Chemin des Dames' ridge. . The bloody failure pushed the French soldiers over the edge, as they began to mutiny en masse on April 29, being fed-up with the war and their poor conditions. The soldiers mutinied by disobeying their officers' orders, refusing to enter the trenches, and some even violently attacking officers. . The soldiers weren't protesting the war itself nor them defending France, but the way they were sent into battle and slaughtered for no gains. They were also fed up with the poor conditions the soldiers faced in the trenches, wanting better food and more leave. . 49 French Divisions of 113 were eventually affected by the mutinies, around 43%. However, only 24 Divisions were deemed 'badly affected'. . As a result of the mutinies, 3,400 French soldiers were court-martialed; 554 mutineers were sentenced to death but over 90% had their sentences reprieved. Nivelle was sacked and replaced by General Pétain, who promised better conditions for the French troops and no more useless offensives. . The French mutinies of 1917, combined with the Russian Revolution in February 1917, gave signs that the Allied armies' spirits were near collapse. Recently donated to the museum is the World War I Doughnut Girl uniform and accessories worn by Brigadier Isabella Blomgren Bonger who left for the front lines in France in September 1918 and returned a year later. The ensemble contains uniform tunic and skirt, helmet, canteen, gas mask and bag, sewing kit, recipe notebook (doughnut recipe included), and souvenir silk and cotton lace embroidered handkerchief. We are excited to learn more about Brig. Bonger and The Salvation Army's role in World War I through this new acquisition. American soldiers fighting in French army in WWI, of whom one is the famous Black boxer, Bob Scanlon (at upper right); from March 23, 1916 issue of The War Budget; see all images. ••••• I don’t generally handle the USA’s role in WWI fighting—because, frankly, there’s not a lot to handle, much as my countrymen pretend otherwise—but I make an exception here. Not because of the oh so clever caption the image bears, which reads “‘Striking’ American Note to Berlin” (“Striking”! Get it? “Striking”! Wartime publications have puns that are *almost* as good as ones in action movies). Rather, because it likely shows the Foreign Legion, and it definitely shows Bob Scanlon. ••••• Scanlon had an interesting life. Born in Alabama in 1886, when the USA was an apartheid society, Scanlon fled the country at the age of 16 and traveled the world as a working man, turning his hand to various trades. In 1904, he started boxing, and became one of the better fighters of his era. He mostly competed in Europe, though he had at least 5 American bouts, and in fact bested some world champions. ••••• Like many Black Americans of the time who got to experience it, he loved France (something about it not being an apartheid society). So when war came in 1914, he joined the French Foreign Legion. While in the Legion, he became friends with the American poet Alan Seeger, and participated in the 2nd Battle of Champagne in September of 1915 (brutal fight). Sometime that Autumn, he transferred into the French regular army, joining the crack 170th regiment (a good number of American legionnaires made this move). Scanlon’s luck gave out shortly afterwards, when he got badly wounded at Verdun, which ended his military career (not his life—made it through the war). ••••• I don’t know if we see Scanlon in the Legion or the 170th here. But the 170th had a rep almost as wild as the Legion’s. Known as “Les Hirondelles de la Mort” (the Swallows of Death), the 170th was said to specialize in the bayonet attack, show utter contempt for danger, and to come through impossible situations on sheer nerve. ••••• #westernfrontassociation #historiansunion #ww1 #wwi #blackhistoryfacts #historylovers #historyprofessor

Today 108 years ago, on April 29, 1916, the Siege of Kut came to an end on the Mesopotamian Front as the British garrison surrendered, one of the greatest Ottoman victories in the First World War. . In May 1915, British General Nixon, Commander in Mesopotamia, had ordered the Indian 6th Division under Major-General Townsend to advance northwards from Basra in Iraq along the Tigris river. . By October 1915, the Indian 6th Division had advanced over 300 miles and was approaching the historic and symbolic city of Baghdad. 1915 had been a disappointing year for the British and French, whose offensives on the Western Front and Gallipoli had been costly failures. . Russia and Serbia had also suffered huge territorial losses, prompting Bulgaria to join the Central Powers and Afghanistan to consider following suit. In order to improve the worsening situation, especially regarding the British prestige in Afghan opinion, Major-General Townsend was ordered to capture Baghdad which, if pulled off, would be a great symbolic victory. . The Indian 6th Division continued their advance and engaged the Ottomans in the Battle of Ctesiphon on November 22, 1915 resulting in a British retreat 200 miles south to the town of Kut-al-Amara, arriving there on December 3, where Major-General Townsend decided he would make a stand and wait for further British reinforcements. . By December 7, the Ottomans had surrounded the British-Indian garrison of some 15,000 troops inside of Kut. Following three failed Ottoman attacks on Kut in December, the Ottomans under German-born Field Marshal von der Goltz decided to lay siege to Kut. . My great grandfather Gilbert Wellington Chancellor was a veteran of WWI. My mom said growing up he never talked about WWI other than mentioning he got trench foot. His stories and experiences are lost. I’ve been trying to do some research into his unit. I know what sector of the Meuse-Argonne Champagne his unit fought in. In 2014, my wife and I went to France for a study abroad documenting WWI battle sites for the centennial. We went to the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, the largest American cemetery in Europe. At the time, I had no idea the family tie to the area, other than my great grandfather was a WWI veteran. I’ve been reading the official account of my great grandfather’s unit in the Blanc Mont portion of the offensive. These small experts of what the 141st Infantry Regiment went through makes me want to know what G.W. Chancellor experienced. I’ll keep researching, but the first person accounts of those who were there are likely lost forever. #wwi #history #wwihistory #1917movie #family
