If the rumor is true that the first villain(s) of the Fantastic Four movie is Galactus and his heralds instead of someone like Annihilus, then I would use him for the next Guardians Of The Galaxy movie. Maybe don't have Annihilus and his entire army from the Negative Zone come out since they're already going to do Secret Wars and it would feel like copying and pasting but have the threat of Annihilus wanting to bring out the rest of his army from the Negative Zone most of the movie and just him alone can beat the Guardians so if he brings out his entire army, all of them and the rest of the universe is done for. I also think a good twist is to have Magnus (An evil version of Adam Warlock) be a version of himself from the Negative Zone since it can be considered an entirely different universe. Before the next Guardians, you could have Nova have his own Disney Plus Special and have it be 45-50 minutes long and the premise is Nova dealing with the PTSD of being the last of his kind to survive Thanos's attack on Xandar with the Negative Zone opening and Annihilus coming through he has to deal with his PTSD and the Guardians like Rocket and Groot can help him through it. This miniseries seems to have become more impactful with every passing year, as it's essentially the bedrock of the modern (MCU) version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a good miniseries and worth reading in and of itself, even if you don't read Annihilation: Conquest. It's got sort of Suicide Squad vibes as Star-Lord is tasked with assembling a team of some notable cosmic players to fight the Phalanx, who were alien cannon fodder in an old nineties X-Men crossover but teamed up with Ultron or something in Annihilation: Conquest. Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Mantis are in this. We also have Captain Universe and the Uni-Force, as well as Deathcry, another nineties jobber who hung out with the Avengers. It seems Keith Giffen and Timothy Green II were able to do what they wanted in these four issues, as most of these characters were pretty inconsequential at the time. I do dig Green II's art. Mantis. Celestial Madonna. Mistress of the martial arts. I passed on getting the Mantis build-a-figure from Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 because I had hope that Hasbro would release a comic version of the character (along with Bug, Moondragon, and Phyla-Vell). But I am happy I waited to at least get a figure of Mantis in her GoTG uniform. FYI, GoTG Volume 3 is a great film! this is an updated origin story for new readers, but the way it's structured and presented is pretty cool. it picks up where we left off in Nova #10, with Richie nearly succumbing to the transmode virus once again, and being placed into a coma by Worldmind to help stall the spread. his consciousness keeps bouncing back and forth between being an average Long Island teen getting inducted into the Nova Corps by Rhomann Dey, and his far future at 68 years old, still locked in a neverending war with the Phalanx. Gamora and Phyla are both there, Novas in their own right. so is Wendell, back from the dead in some light/energy form. it's all very Wizard of Oz. also present in the future is a young initiate, Zam. Ko-Rel's son. man, that one hit like a ton of bricks. except, wait a second, when he's reliving the past, the first badguy he goes up against is...the Phalanx? that ain't right. and how is he experiencing memories of a future that hasn't happened yet? turns out the transmode virus has been taking advantage of Richie's coma, probing his mind's past and probable futures for any weakness it can exploit. and therein lies the fatal flaw in the Phalanx's plan. Richie will *never* give up. there's nothing they can find to hold over him. all they did was remind him of who he is. he frees himself and finds he made it to Kvch after all. now to find Warlock (not that one) and finally start putting together a plan that's gonna stop the Phalanx once and for all. the art's handled by 3 teams. Asrar draws the origin stuff, Alves handles the future stuff, and an artist credited only as Klebs does the present day stuff. his (or hers, Idk) art rules. very Maleevesque, which seems appropriate considering Maleev is about to hop on and do covers starting with the next issue. Alves has been doing the book for a few issues now, and it's his art I think of when I think of this title. it's not heavily stylized (nothing wrong with that tho), and it's not particularly flashy, but it gets the job done. lots of dramatic shadows, which work well with DnA's darker edged sci-fi. #marvel #nova #richardrider #annihilationconquest #igcomicsfamily #igcomicscommunity #mcu #dankestcomics
Richie's sidequest continues thru the next several issues before he shows up in the climax to Conquest, so I'll be sticking with his series for a bit. when we last left him, he had escaped Phalanx occupied Kree space, and wound up at the literal edge of the universe. this is our first introduction to Knowhere, the community of space/dimensional/time travelers residing in a severed Celestial head, and its security chief, Cosmo, both of which are now movie stars. who doesn't love Cosmo? he is a very good boy. he's also immensely powerful, being a telepath AND telekinetic. he and Richie make short work of a security threat, and Cosmo sends Richie on his way to Kvch, the Technarchy homeworld, with the hopes that they'll have a solution to the Phalanx problem. before he arrives tho, he's pulled from his warp jump by a Vore, an interdimensional predator. so are Gamora and Drax, who've been hot on Richie's trail. Richie and Gamora team up to escape the Vore, and work thru some of their issues. sort of. whatever feelings Gamora has for Richie, she's still the deadliest woman in the galaxy, and she's got a mission to bring him in. Richie's no dummy tho, and he shoots first, and leaves Gamora with Drax. their reconciliation will have to wait. by now tho, Richie's transmode infection is no longer able to be kept in check, and he limps his way onward to Kvch. I love this book. DnA's mix of hard sci-fi, deep marvel lore, and fun superheroics is a joy to read. I totally forgot how brutal this arc is. when Richie tries to escape Kree space to call in reinforcements against the Phalanx, he hits the barrier they've erected and crash lands on an outworld planet that had been devastated by the Annihilation Wave. and that's where we meet Ko-Rel, the leader of the last survivors of the Wave. she's just a medic in the Kree military, but as the highest ranking officer left, the group's survival fell to her. for a year, they've been stranded, and her determination to do right by her people, and to get home to her son are the only things that have kept them alive. Worldmind deputizes her as a Nova, while it goes to work repairing Richie's body. but the Phalanx have already tracked him down. they kill everybody in one fell swoop. all that time surviving and hoping for rescue, gone in a single day. Gamora, now a Phalanx Select, infects Richie with the transmode virus, and they take off. just like Richie in Annihilation, all Ko-Rel wants is payback. unlike Richie, she never gets it. Worldmind convinces her that to save the galaxy, she's got to kill Richie. if the Phalanx get their hands on Worldmind, it's over. Ko-Rel catches up to him, and with a fraction of his power, she holds her own against him. until Gamora sneaks in and puts the literal knife in her back. and so ends the story of Ko-Rel. god damn. her last words to Richie are "this isn't you." for the remainder of the arc, these words wrestle around in his mind. why isn't he screaming? why did he just let the transmode virus take him over? it all leads to a climactic moment where, thru sheer force of will, Richie pushes the transmode virus to the back of his consciousness, and regains control of his body. he guns it the hell out there, opening a stargate to anywhere that's not here, and winds up in at the edge of the universe, in uncharted territory. not even Worldmind knows where they are. it's brilliant how DnA set up Ko-Rel as an eventual Nova partner for Richie, only to pull the rug out from under the reader to show that Gamora isn't the deadliest woman in the galaxy in name only, and that, just like in Annihilation, this Conquest is war and people will die.
is this even good? Idk, I can't really judge it objectively. you put a goth space western in my hands, and all I can say is: I'm gonna love it. I basically thought Grillo-Marxuach's Super-Skrull story was complete garbage, but boy o boy does he redeem himself here. he introduces us to The Pale Rider, the Kree With No Name, Wraith. Wraith rides a rocket motorcycle thru space. his gun morphs into whips, swords, daggers, whatever he needs. the Phalanx are terrified of him. yes, he is literally so goth, it causes machines to know fear. he probably listens to Stabbing Westward. Wraith is my favorite. he's on a hunt for revenge against the man who murdered his parents. this somehow brings him into conflict with the Phalanx, and when a band of rebels gets wind of what he can do to the machines, they recruit him to join the cause. look, none of this matters, because the important thing is he's got a badass Clint Eastwood poncho but y'know it's goth as hell. Ronan's in this. he's been assimilated into the Phalanx, but only like halfway. same thing with Super-Skrull. turns out to fully assimilate, it has to be by choice. again, it's irrelevant to the story because Wraith's got streaky white AND black hair in a messy ponytail manbun thing. the big reveal is that the Phalanx have the Supreme Intelligence, and they're going to use it's soul or something to broadcast their agenda into the minds of every Kree at once. but like, Wraith absorbs souls because again, my dude is the *most goth* and so he takes the Supreme Intelligence's soul into himself and becomes the bearer of the godhead. it's all very technical, but what you have to understand is that Wraith's speech bubbles are black, and in a smaller font than the other characters, to denote that his voice is naught but a goth whisper. Kyle Hotz draws this and god bless him for it. I've always liked his inky, shadowy, drapey, Kelley Jonesish art. I've seen him cut loose more than he does here, but it's still great looking stuff. love the Clint Langley covers too. I don't typically go for the videogame concept art aesthetic, but damn if they don't look cool as hell to my inner 13 year old. I love Wraith.
has any other tie-in miniseries had this much of a cultural impact? this features the 1st modern Rocket, Groot, Mantis, and Star-Lord, and the first time they team up, AND the debut of the Guardians uniforms. Giffen and Tim Green II should be multimillionaires. impact aside, it's also just an absolute banger of a comic. Giffen returns to Peter Quill, reinvents him AGAIN as a new version of his old Star-Lord gimmick, and has him put together a suicide squad to infiltrate Phalanx occupied Kree territory to shut down their operations. it's just wild to read this and see how much was directly lifted for the GotG movies. one thing I really like in Giffen's Quill this time around is that the snark from his appearances in Annihilation is tempered with a kind of light hearted world weariness. he seems much more three dimensional here. he just rolls with the punches, getting the job done with a heavy sigh. Rocket comes out the gate basically fully formed with the modern take. weapons expert, tactical genius, extremely capable, sarcastic little shit. I love this dude so much. another thing I like is that the suicide squad aspect isn't just for show. characters die. Deathcry accidentally gets blown to smithereens by her teammate Captain Universe. Groot sacrifices himself to buy the others time to escape. tho, in a surprise twist, we learn that Groot can regenerate; another thing the movies used. in the end, it takes the combined efforts of everyone to complete the mission. they all get their time in the spotlight, and become solidified as an actual team, not just a loose group of expendables. they don't get the Guardians of the Galaxy moniker quite yet, but they're 90% of the way there. also, enough cannot be said about Tim Green II and Nathan Fairbairn's art. heavily Moebius inspired, from the characters to the environments, and with a cinematic flair using fisheye lenses and wide angles for the panel compositions. Fairbairn's European pastel palette is just gorgeous. this is like marvel's The Incal right here. it stands on its own too, well worth reading even if you don't care about the wider event.
What I've read in March: I begun the month with an Omnibus, "Annihilation Conquest". Much better than the other Annihilation omnibus, which I read a couple of months ago. I liked the story better and the artwork had almost the same tone throughout the book. Did a re-read of Sweet Tooth. Still on of my favorite books! The Return was ok, but not nessecary in my mind. Lemire's Mazebook was my first ever upgrade from single issues. This book will probably be one of my alltime favorites! That also could be said of Tom King's Supergirl, can't wait for the adaptation! I also read one of the earlier works of Jonathan Hickman, Pax Romana, more about that book wil follow later this week. I've decided this is a vibes book. cosmic Joan of Arc on a fantasy filled divine quest, with the woman she loves, who is also a dragon, has to rally the primitive people on a backwater planet to fight the robot overlords. what's not to like? we saw in the Conquest Prologue that Phyla's now operating as Quasar, tho she's still getting the hang of it, and that she's accompanied by her girlfriend, Moondragon. and they *really* love one other. when Phyla starts hearing voices telling her to find the savior, Moondragon's down to help. when Moondragon succumbs to the dragon demon that lives inside her head and becomes an actual space dragon, Phyla's not phased a bit. they just roll with the punches together, and it's really refreshing to see. to his credit, Gage actually writes a story that isn't just plot. Phyla's got tough choices to make, and it's those choices that determine what kind of hero, if any, she's going to be. turns out, it's the selfless, empathetic kind. and that's not something that comes naturally, as she's constantly fighting the dark influence of Annihilus, who bore the Quantum Bands before her. everything's a struggle, but if you know yourself and you have a strong support system, you can defy impossible odds. this book has a real optimism, despite the stakes. and I guess I should mention that the savior is Adam Warlock, and the voice that speaks directly to Phyla is the Supreme Intelligence. it's pretty clever how the plot drops hints pointing toward Adam: Phyla's searching for a "wizard" and finds a "warlock." I mentioned the aesthetic, and I am so here for this cheesy faux religious cosmic medieval look. Mike Lilly draws it, and he's got the space fantasy thing down pat. lots of highly detailed alien forests, battlefields full of warriors, sci-fi structures, and he draws one hell of a dragon. you can also tell he worked on Vampirella just prior to this, because he goes to great lengths making sure the reader knows exactly where the nipples are on every single female character. I was surprised I didn't see any More Than Mortal or Lady Pendragon or Magdalena on his resume. anyway, I would read an ongoing series of this.
just 3 months after the last issue of Annihilation, comes the direct sequel. that is a *fast* turnaround. even the X-Men get more time to breathe between events. this is par for the course in the DnA era. they pack A TON of stories in their 3 year tenure. and after pitching in with the Nova mini for Annihilation, they're now the cosmic top dogs at marvel beginning with this event. so how do you do a sequel to Annihilation, a war story with impossibly high stakes? well, there are different types of warfare. Annihilation was a territorial war. Conquest is an occupation. Annihilus was blowing up planets, sending refugees fleeing across the galaxy. this story's villains, the Phalanx, are *already here*. they're infiltrators. and they've cut off Kree space from the rest of the universe. there's nowhere to go. this is a story about resistance. we've got some familiar faces returning. Peter Quill's advising the Kree military, now led by Ronan. Quill's invitation to the Spaceknights to upgrade the Kree's military with custom software is what kicks off the plot. unbeknownst to all, the Spaceknights arrive infected by the Phalanx's transmode virus, and upload it into Kree hardware. oops. Phyla-Vell's back as the new Quasar, and this time around, she'll serve as Conquest's protagonist. this is a good call imo, because she's got big shoes to fill and a bad case of imposter syndrome, and that, in combination with a new set of powers she doesn't fully understand, makes for great storytelling. good thing she's got a great support system in Moondragon. she's also got a heavy Joan of Arc vibe in this story. *something* is speaking to her thru the Quantum Bands, tasking her with a divine quest to find the savior, the only one who can save the galaxy. this'll lead to a fun return of an old favorite, but we're not there yet. Mike Perkins does the art, and it's cool to see a more classic comic book art style in a modern marvel cosmic story. his work would fit in perfectly at DC in the 70s. there's a realism to the action, and all the wild colors really make the story feel alien and otherworldly. very cinematic, beautiful stuff. very excited to be diving back into this.

25/26/2022 Finally finished these two behemoths. Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest by @marvel comics. This was a massive story that spanned multiple comics titled by different characters all facing the same overpowering enemy. Each story arc contained individual characters struggles of impossible odds to overcome an enemy that is wiping out the entire universe. So many characters came together here, some that I’ve never taken the time to read before but now have a huge respect for how they’re written. Each one was placed in a position where they had to make sacrifices of their own for the greater good in defending innocent people while the galaxy faced certain doom. My own personal favorite; Nova actually dies at one point but then is brought back (because nobody stays dead in comics) to help lead the charge in saving the galaxy. I would love to see this play out in a huge movie some day.
