I had a fun two days, though I only went to four bookstores for @seabookstoreday because I did other fun stuff :) Had to support the three nearest my house which are @threetreesbooks, @page2books and @paperboatbooksellers. BOOK REVIEW: I have been wanting to read “Helter Skelter” for a while now and it was definitely worth the read. While it was long and at times tedious due to the amount of information and people that were being discussed, it was also super interesting. I never really knew much about the Manson murders and Charles Manson’s followers. This book goes into all the details of his hold on the Family members and it’s so trippy. Eve, jazzed about and celebrating a recent potential development in her life, goes home with her friendly neighborhood bartender, Ethan, after a fun night out with friends. It’s a one-night stand, no one’s feelings are hurt when no one calls after. Eve lives her life, Ethan lives his. Until Eve misses her period and finds out she’s pregnant. Ethan handles the news better than most people probably would; his newly-rekindled girlfriend, on the other hand, is not so thrilled. So Ethan is torn between wanting to help Eve and be a part of the journey and appeasing the woman he loves. This is a cute little story about a plucky girl who deals with an absolute curveball in the best way possible, as she gets by with more than a little help from her friends (and her best friend’s extremely sweet and solid brother). I listened to this one, and the narration was very Eve — more spritely than most of us on our best days, using more metaphors than … a … metaphor … book? (Sure!) Stories such as this one are nice to read because they demonstrate how to make lemonade out of lemons with a jolly attitude to boot. I, myself, have way too much anxiety for one-night stands (zero judgment for those who can go for it!), so this one was a massive departure for me. Another fabulous #aussieapril2024 read by @clairebutlerauthor 💚💛 The is Claire’s debut novel and Book 1 in the Red Wood Series which centers around Brielle, Princess of the Southern Kingdom and Henri, Prince of the Northern Kingdom. Both of their Kingdoms have fallen and Brielle and Henri are forced to flee and hide from those who hunt them in the Red Wood. Henri wants no part of reclaiming his lands while Brielle is determined to take back what is hers! But knowing who to trust is complex and betrayal and death lurks around every corner! This was an action packed read full of twists and turns and ends in an ‘are you kidding me’ cliffhanger! Not going to lie though, I found Brielle a difficult main character to like to start with. She was spoilt, entitled, conniving, self-centered and downright mean, which also made her very naive. Henri on the other hand uses booze and women to escape the pressure placed on him by his father. He has no desire to rule and would prefer to disappear and live a normal life. The character development for them both was really well written and thankfully has you rooting for Brielle in the end. There is also a romance subplot full of angst and even a one bed situation. This was exactly the book I needed to read at exactly the right time. It is well written and has an excellent pace. It's creepy with superstitious undertones and a mystery that pays off in the end. Most importantly, the characters make logical choices. Whether dealing with grief or investigating the kidnapping of young boys - they all process information and act upon it in reasonable ways. This was my first read by @writernorth but I'm very much looking forward checking out more of his work in the future. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In depth look at the people and institutions that were working so hard to free so many. Great history about the New York Vigilance Committee in 1835. In the 1840s vigilance committees proliferated throughout the North and began collaborating to dispatch fugitive slaves from the upper South, Washington, and Baltimore, through Philadelphia and New York, to Albany, Syracuse, and Canada. These networks of antislavery resistance, centered on New York City, became known as the underground railroad. Forced to operate in secrecy by hostile laws, courts, and politicians, these city’s underground-railroad agents helped more than 3,000 fugitive slaves reach freedom between 1830 and 1860s. Much of this is stuff I'd never heard before or knew nothing about. Oh. My. Stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What a ride this book was. Heck, the whole series. I will say in the beginning I was nervous this wasn't going to be everything I expected it to be. The first 20% felt a tad bit rushed and underwhelming. HOWEVER, stay along for the ride!! From there, it was as addicting as the rest of the series, full of suspense, battle, laughs, tears, love, and every feeling under the sun. While I try not to give any spoilers away, the ending was perfect. Everything I needed to be okay with the fact that this series is finally over. And those epilogues!! I loved them sooo much. I feel fulfilled and at peace with how it all ended. This series will forever hold a special place in my heart. Worst book EVER! As soon as I started reading The Woman in the Wods by @a.j._rivers I knew it was going to be a struggle. The first thing I noticed was the author's love of the thesaurus. There were words used to describe certain scenes that did not match. If you want to use detail, make sure it is used correctly. Sometimes, using the simple version of the word is better than citing the thesaurus. The second thing I noticed is the lack of movement. It was so boring. I could not get over how boring this book is. There were a couple of times the book literally put me to sleep. The last thing I noticed was the grammatical errors. If you want to be an author, then you must understand English 101. I think the author was snoozing in that class. In the end, I couldn't stand this book, and I was more than willing to take the rest of her books off my list. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a book about books and I most definitely bought this one because I loved the cover so much! Mukesh is a widow to his late wife and lives a quiet life in London. His three adult daughters constantly worry about him eating well, socializing, and carrying on with his life. Mukesh is worrying about his introverted granddaughter, Priya who reads all day every day. He’s trying to find a way to connect with her the way she did with his late wife, but it’s too hard. Meanwhile, Aleshia is a reserved and anxious teenager who works at the local library. It is there she discovers a crumbled piece of paper with a list of books “in case you need them”. So when Mukesh shows up to the library early asking for a recommendation to bond with his granddaughter, she starts out by listing the first book on the list, To Kill a Mockingbird. She feels obligated to follow the list as she recommends them to Mukesh. Slowly but surely, the two form a unique friendship as they read through this list of books together. This book was so freakin cute ugh. I loved the character development of both of these characters as they move through grief, anxiety, and rebuilding their lives. 📖 Oi gente! Eu li durante março um livro sobre mafia, nunca tinha lido nada deste estilo e vim contar pra vocês o que achei. E o tanto de sentimentos que esta leitura me causou, nem sei dizer. Leitura indicada para maiores de 18 anos, e com muitos assuntos que podem gerar gatilhos. No livro #matteo da @autoraralves vamos conhecer a história de Matteo, o protagonista. Ele é um dos irmãos da família Ferrari, que conta com vários filhos e também alguns “bastardos”. Esta família é uma das mais poderosas da máfia, e Matteo já cresceu neste ambiente. Ele é considerado cruel, louco e sádico e é chamado de Gêmeo mau. E realmente, o livro deixa este lado de Matteo bem evidente, ao mostrar todas as crueldades de que ele é capaz. Matteo e o Giulio (o gêmeo bom) se envolvem em altas confusões e o tempo todo eles brigam, se xingam, mas têm um amor muito forte um pelo outro, assim como por toda a família. Matteo acaba se envolvendo com Madson Montanari, a filha da máfia rival e vou falar pra vocês, esta personagem também é sangue nos olhos, ela não dá mole pra ninguém e não se espanta com a loucura do Matteo, muito pelo contrário, ele que fica enlouquecido com o temperamento dela. Este é o primeiro livro que li da autora, e eu gostei bastante da narrativa dela. Fiquei surpresa de ter gostado tanto da história. Os personagens são interessantes e fazem coisas que nos surpreendem o tempo todo! A trama choca e impressiona. Quando eu pensava que a história tinha terminado, lá vinha a autora com mais bomba atrás de bomba! O Matteo não é um mocinho (aliás, ninguém nesta história é), mas eu gostei muito do personagem, achei que ele foi bem escrito e desenvolvido e ele me deixou o tempo todo tensa, sem saber quais atitudes ele ia tomar. É um personagem muito intenso, sádico e que só guarda amor para poucas pessoas no mundo, mas este lado “fofo” dele foi muito bem explorado também. Este livro faz parte de uma série e apesar de a autora relembrar trechos das histórias anteriores, em alguns momentos eu me senti um pouco perdida na história. Mas na verdade, isso só serviu para que eu ficasse curiosa pra ler os livros anteriores e também o próximo, que será o do Giulio. 4🌟🤯
