THE LION TREE by Jamie McKendrick Alexander Cornelius mentions a tree called the lion-tree, the timber of which he says was used to build the Argo … which cannot be rotted by water or destroyed by fire … This tree is, so far as I am aware, unknown to anyone else. – Pliny the Elder May well be extinct, and our one authority is terse, but that surely speaks in his favour. No wonder its timber was used on the Argo – the ship that rent old Neptune’s slumber – for in contact with seawater it neither rotted nor buckled. A solitary, an isolate, it never grew in groves but thrived in the vicinity of clear springs. Spindly, tougher than oak, more close-grained than gopherwood, even its leaves, which were glaucous and spiky, were defended against all folivores except giraffes. Its small hard fruits, swathed in bluish wool, were inedible and bitter though only mildly toxic. It bore not the least resemblance to a lion unless the noise the wind made rattling its leaves gave rise to the name. Sometimes I see it in early spring, rising very far away. Then leaves grow over it, completely hiding it. I feel it glinting through the leaves, erratic, like someone hitting the side of a glass with a metal spoon. Living things don’t all require light in the same degree. Some of us make our own light: a silver leaf like a path no one can use, a shallow lake of silver in the darkness under the great maples. But you know this already. You and the others who think you live for truth and, by extension, love all that is cold. * David Bengtson found a poem about living with a cold heart to complement a heart found in snirt. Lamium (dead-nettles) is a genus of about 30 species of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae, of which it is the type genus. The generic name Lamium was used by Pliny the Elder in the first century AD. The name comes from the Greek laimos, which means "gullet", a reference to the gaping throat-like appearance of the corolla. @msdnavy dévoile "APOPHENIA", un projet tout terrain et plus qu’aboutît ! 😵💫 Ce vendredi a été marqué par de belles sorties comme le nouvel album de @nelick ou le projet en commun de @keroueqpc et @jeanjass. Mais c’est bien sur @msdnavy que l’on va se pencher. En effet l’artiste issu du collectif @forev3rain nous a dévoilé "APOPHENIA", un EP de six titres où l’on peut retrouver deux collaborations avec @thegreatkauda et @_shybot_ tout deux faisant également parti du collectif ! Cet EP a résonné dans nos écouteurs comme une bouffée d’air frais on sent que le jeune artiste ne s’est laissé guidé uniquement par la passion. Au sein de ces dix-sept minutes on peut entendre des inspirations qui vont de la pop des années 2010 à de la musique électronique en passant par des styles plus actuels comme de l’hyperpop. On a donc un projet tout terrain qui parcourt les différentes influences de Navy mais le fait que ce projet sort du lot est probablement le travail qui a été réalisé pour arriver à ce résultat. On sent l’aisance avec laquelle le rouennais s’approprie chacun des styles cités plus tôt. On vous a glissé un extrait du visuel illustrant à merveille l’intro de ce beau projet. Then his wife asked. Nothing. Nothing and more nothing and nothing more. What a waste of time, said his colleagues, valuable time. People would kill for that. One December for ten nights and a hundred hours, he stared at nothing. He looked at where there wasn't anything but nothing, more nothing, and nothing more. Nothing but death and birth merging into light—collisions of blue, red, yellow, white. Spirals, ellipticals, nothing but the universe quintupling in size. What wasn't is teeming with galaxies, gleaming innumerably. It's nothing, said he. Look at nothing to see. * In December 1995 astronomer Robert Williams took a risk that was mocked by his colleagues at the Space Telescope Science Institute. As director, Williams used his discretionary time with the Hubble Space Telescope to point at nothing—an apparently empty spot of sky—over a 10-day period.
