Horsehead Nebula Located in the constellation Orion. Proximately 1300 light-years away. This was old data from last year that I wanted to try out because of NASA’s newest JWST image of the same nebula. Spanning over 60,000 light-years, the peculiar elliptical galaxy is also known as NGC 5128. Forged in a collision of two otherwise normal galaxies, Centaurus A's fantastic jumble of young blue star clusters, pinkish star forming regions, and imposing dark dust lanes are seen here in remarkable detail. The colorful galaxy portrait is a composite of image data from space- and ground-based telescopes large and small. Near the galaxy's center, left over cosmic debris is steadily being consumed by a central black hole with a billion times the mass of the Sun. As in other active galaxies, that process generates the radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray energy radiated by Centaurus A. Por que la estrella agonizante dejó sus rastros a km bajo la superficie del océano en forma de nódulos de manganeso. Son una de las mayores riquezas de minerales esenciales para fabricar desde teléfonos móviles hasta baterías para autos eléctricos y paneles solares. Estas rocas pequeñas se encuentran en gran parte del lecho oceánico, crecen muy lentamente, cerca de un milímetro cada millón de años, capa tras capa. Éstos nódulos crecen asociados a las bacterias al absorber los minerales disueltos en el agua de mar. Dwarf Galaxy IC 776 in Virgo: On the Hunt for X-rays | Hubble FriendsofNASA.org | View full-size image: https://lnkd.in/ghTA2-ZJ This is the dwarf galaxy IC 776. It is a swirling collection of stars new and old located in the constellation Virgo—in fact, in the Virgo galaxy cluster—100 million light-years from Earth. While a dwarf galaxy, it is also been classified as an SAB-type or ‘weakly barred’ spiral, one study naming it a “complex case” in morphology. This highly detailed view from Hubble demonstrates that complexity well. IC 776 has a ragged, disturbed disc that nevertheless looks to spiral around the core, and arcs of star-forming regions. This image is from an observation program dedicated to the study of dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster, searching for sources of X-rays in such galaxies. X-rays are often emitted by accretion discs, where material that is drawn into a compact object by gravity crashes together and forms a hot, glowing disc. The compact object can be a white dwarf or neutron star in a binary pair, stealing material from its companion star, or it can be the supermassive black hole at the heart of a galaxy, devouring all around it. Dwarf galaxies like IC 776, travelling through the Virgo cluster, experience a pressure from the intergalactic gas which can both stimulate star formation and feed the central black hole in a galaxy. That can create energetic accretion discs, hot enough to emit X-rays. Image Description: A spiral galaxy viewed tilted at a diagonal angle. The core and the disc of the galaxy are different colors, but are otherwise difficult to tell apart, with the disc having wispy, ragged edges and many arcs of glowing star-forming patches. Astronomers have found water vapour in a disc around the young star HL Tauri exactly where planets may be forming. In this image, the new observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which ESO is a partner, show the water vapour in shades of blue. Near the centre of the disc, where the young star lives, the environment is hotter and the gas brighter. Em 24 de abril, o Telescópio Espacial Hubble (HST) completou 34 anos em órbita. A comemoração poderia ter sido melhor: seus giroscópios não estão funcionando adequadamente. Os giroscópios são fundamentais no Sistema de Controle de Apontamento, junto com três sensores de orientação fina e rodas de reação. Esse sistema permite que o HST rastreie alvos com precisão. Para funcionar de forma ideal, o Hubble deve manter o foco em um alvo dentro de um limite de desvio de no máximo 7/1000 de um segundo de arco, equivalente à largura de um cabelo humano visto a uma milha de distância. Recentemente, flutuações de energia em um dos giroscópios fizeram o HST entrar em seu modo de segurança em 23 de abril. Esse dispositivo já tinha causado um episódio parecido em novembro do ano passado. Com apenas dois giroscópios funcionais, não há como manter o status operacional e as atividades científicas foram suspensas temporariamente para entender o ocorrido e solucionar a situação. Segundo a NASA, a deterioração dos giroscópios decorre principalmente do desgaste de delicados cabos metálicos flexíveis responsáveis por transmitir energia e dados para fora do mecanismo. Eles atravessam um fluido denso contido no giroscópio, sucumbindo gradualmente à corrosão e à potencial deformação ou quebra. Nesses 34 anos, o HST teve falha de 8 dos 22 giroscópios devido à corrosão dos cabos. Em 99, o quatro dos seis giroscópios tiveram defeito e falha final apenas um mês antes de uma missão de manutenção que os substituiria. O Hubble ficou em modo de segurança aguardando a chegada do Ônibus Espacial. Antecipando problemas como esse, a equipe de engenheiros elaborou um plano de contingência com apenas dois giroscópios e sensores alternativos. Isso foi uma resposta ao cancelamento temporário da última missão planejada de manutenção após o desastre do Columbia. Após protestos de cientistas e do público, a Missão de Manutenção 4, em 2009, substituiu os seis giroscópios pela última vez. Meet the Whale Galaxy (slide 2) and its cosmic companion, the Crowbar Galaxy (slide 3). Although their shapes got them their names, there's a lot more going on with these two. The Whale galaxy is similar in size to our own Milky Way galaxy and is found in the Canes Venatici constellation. It has a raging core creating new and bight stars, fueled by supernovae. Not too far from it is the Crowbar galaxy, which appears to have gone through a collision or two, leaving it heavily distorted, but with a lot of character. Assemelhando-se a um invasor alienígena de videogame antigo, esta visão interessante do Hubble captura uma galáxia espiral com lentes gravitacionais, perto do canto superior esquerdo da primeira imagem. O campo gravitacional que envolve o enorme aglomerado de galáxias nesta imagem #HubblesWildest , Abell 68, é forte o suficiente para deformar e ampliar a luz proveniente das galáxias atrás dele. Isso cria a ilusão do invasor do espaço! Abell 68 está a cerca de 2 bilhões de anos-luz de distância. Program 1251’in bir parçası olan ekip, Titan’ın atmosferini ve iklimini incelemeyi, bulutları ve yüzey özelliklerini ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlıyor. 5 Kasım’da Titan’ın ilk Webb görüntülerini alan Conor Nixon liderliğindeki ekip, Titan’ın kuzey yarımküresinde bulutların varlığını doğruladı ve uzun süredir devam eden iklim tahminlerini doğruladı. Ancak, bulutların hareketini ve şeklini anlamak için daha fazla veriye ihtiyaç vardı. Bu nedenle, ekip hızlı bir şekilde Keck Gözlemevi’ni kullanarak takip gözlemleri talep etti. Waarneemprogramma van Hubble-ruimtetelescoop ligt stil NASA is bezig om de wetenschappelijke activiteiten van de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop te hervatten nadat deze op 23 april in ‘veilige modus’ was gegaan vanwege een probleem met een gyroscoop. Voor het overige is de ruimtetelescoop in goede conditie. Hubble schakelde automatisch over naar veilige modus toen een van zijn drie gyroscopen afwijkende informatie gaf. 🌌✨ Cosmic Collision Captured by Hubble! 🚀 This eerie NASA Hubble Space Telescope snapshot unveils what appears to be glowing eyes staring back at us. This uncanny sight, resembling the face of an otherworldly creature, is the spectacular result of a head-on collision between two galaxies. Each "eye" is the bright core of a galaxy, enveloped by a ring of young blue stars forming the face's outline. This cosmic event is part of the Arp-Madore 2026-424 system from the "Catalogue of Southern Peculiar Galaxies and Associations." While galaxy collisions are not rare, a direct smashup like this creates a unique and fleeting "ring" structure, visible for about 100 million years. Try not to spiral 🌀 This extraordinary Hubble image shows a celestial “spiral” near the star LL Pegasi. It’s one of the most perfect geometrical forms in our universe, caused by the formation of an unusual nebula as a star begins to die and cast off its outer layers of material.
