Camp Whale March 2024 Welcome to Camp Whale. A temporary and portable ice camp set up on floating sea ice in the Beaufort Sea. The operation is run by the Arctic Submarine Laboratory along with the US Navy. The yellow objects in the lower part of the photo are tents which make up the camp. The ice in the lower part of the frame is multi year sea ice. Multi-year meaning it has survived at least two summers and could be 3-4 meters thick. Just beyond the camp is first year ice, newly formed and 2-3 feet thick. The fresh ice was smooth enough to land on and we made our airstrip on the refrozen lead. Beyond that, is more multi-year and two year old ice. Ice pans made up of multi-year ice, as seen here, help protect the less stable new ice, as well as our landing strips. The camp allowed the US Navy to run Arctic exercises as well as facilitating scientists from different universities in their research. It was impressive to see how a group of people can come together and execute such a momentous task in a challenging environment with nothing but the slightest hiccups which were easily overcome. For most of the camp’s existence the temperatures hovered around -40C, the perfect temperature for making ice and frost bite, yet everyone was in good spirits and with positive attitudes. Despite camping out on the Beaufort Sea ice in rather chilly temperatures, everyone who got on our plane was excited to be in camp. When it came time to leave camp, some were more excited than others, I think it was the lack of showers. I get the opportunity to work with many fantastic groups and people, but every once in a while there is a group that is really top notch with their logistics and a lot of fun to support. The Arctic Submarine Laboratory is one of them. Plus there were submarines involved and how cool is that. @arcticsubmarinelaboratory #arcticocean #campwhale #beaufortsea #polarscience #arcticresearch

Installation day! We got 2/3 stations complete. Each station has 4 displacement sensors, 4 soil moisture sensors, and 6 soil temperature sensors. Each station uses 2 logging devices to collect data. Each station uses 12 AA batteries and 2 AAA batteries, and takes one reading per hour. They’re mounted to a galvanized angle bar, and that is mounted to PVC pipe that was sunk 2m down. 2 weeks ago this entire forested area still had 30-60cm of snow. Today the thick top layer of mosses and lichen is nearly thawed, but the soil is still completely frozen, which leaves the melted water nowhere to go. It was a very wet, but very beautiful day to establish long term #arcticresearch

SEA OF METHANE ENDANGERS PLANET Deep below the icy expanse of the Arctic lies a hidden danger that could have catastrophic consequences for our planet. Layers of methane gas are trapped beneath the permafrost, and as the landscape changes, this sea of methane has the potential to be unleashed, wreaking havoc on the world. Studying the permafrost beneath the islands of Svalbard, researchers found an immense reservoir of methane that could reach several million cubic feet. Currently, the leakage from below the permafrost is minimal, but glacial retreat and permafrost thawing could “lift the lid” on this hidden danger, according to Thomas Birchall, a geologist at Norway’s University Center in Svalbard and lead author of a study published in Frontiers in Earth Science. Ocean currents can thin the permafrost, creating patchy and unpredictable regions. Geographical features can also allow gas produced by underlying rocks to escape. Even in areas with continuous permafrost, methane gas can migrate beneath the cold seal of the permafrost, creating the potential for escape. A large-scale seepage would initiate a dangerous feedback loop of warming—a cycle where methane release leads to further permafrost thaw, resulting in additional gas emissions. While the focus of the study was on Norway, the researchers believe that migrating deposits of methane are likely present in other parts of the Arctic region as well. 👉Read more on our website: www.naphiladelphia.com 👉Link in bio to the Magazine #ClimateEmergency #MethaneMenace #ArcticResearch #GlobalWarming #UnseenThreat #IceLockedDanger #ClimateChangeAwareness #EnvironmentalImpact #SaveOurPlanet #FeedbackLoopFiasco #ScienceOfClimate #UnderTheIce"

🌟 Recap! 🌟 🌡️ Our research, now published in Nature*, reveals a 30% increase in carbon release in tundra ecosystems with 1.4°C of air warming, based on data from 56 OTC experiments. 🌱 Both plants and microbes contribute to the tundra's stimulated respiration under warming conditions. 🌿 Local soil conditions influenced how strongly warming stimulated respiration. This information is valuable to enhance model performance to predict climate warming effects on respiration. 🗺 Our map predicts which tundra areas are more or less vulnerable to the impact of warming on respiration in the Arctic and Alpine regions. 🌍 Plus, our study suggests that as the climate warms, tundra areas may start releasing carbon instead of absorbing it, depending on how plants respond to the changes. — Dive deeper into our study yourself here*! — #tundraecology #ecosystemrespiration #arcticresearch #climatewarming #carboncycle #ecosystemresponse #soilhealth #microbialcommunity #environmentalresearch #climateimpact #globalchange #sciencecommunication #researchfindings #ecologicalscience #climatestudy #scientificinsights #environmentaldynamics #warmingexperiments #opentopchamber #internationaltundraexperiment @umeauniversitet @kuleuven @fwovlaanderen @dfornatlan @universityofgothenburg & many other research partners *Maes, S. 📊 Our study* also took a ‘big picture look’ at how ecosystems in the Arctic and surrounding alpine regions might react to warming. We created a map to forecast the potential increase in respiration (carbon release) by plants and microbes as temperatures rise. The map, based on data from our OTC experiments, spans the entire Arctic and Alpine tundra regions. Here’s what it reveals: 🗺 Some areas, like parts of Siberia and Canada, could see a big jump in respiration with warming compared to other areas (they are more sensitive). 🗺 In the Arctic tundra alone, we anticipate a 32% increase in respiration, and across the Arctic and alpine tundra, a 25% increase. 🗺 However, these numbers come with a fair amount of uncertainty due to limited soil data and model uncertainties across these regions. That's why further research is crucial to address these uncertainties and refine our predictions about how carbon dynamics will change in response to warming. Stay tuned for more updates! 🌿 #tundraecology #ecosystemrespiration #arcticresearch #climatewarming #carboncycle #ecosystemresponse #soilhealth #microbialcommunity #environmentalresearch #climateimpact #globalchange #sciencecommunication #researchfindings #ecologicalscience #climatestudy #scientificinsights #environmentaldynamics #warmingexperiments #opentopchamber #internationaltundraexperiment @umeauniversitet @kuleuven @fwovlaanderen @dfornatlan @universityofgothenburg & many other research partners Maes, S. 🌎 This is what these results are telling us about the fate of tundra ecosystems in a warmer climate*… 🌡️ We found a really big increase in extra carbon release from tundra soils and plants with warmer conditions. The effect did not seem to fade in the long term since it persisted for at least 25 years… ===> This means that the large carbon stocks in tundra soils could transition from absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to releasing it if warming causes respiration to increase so much that it is greater than the capacity for (more) plants to absorb this extra CO2 🌡️ We discovered that how warming affects respiration depends on soil conditions like nitrogen and pH. ===> This real-world data on the relationship between soil conditions and respiration can enhance climate models. Climate models are used to predict future carbon emissions, and the more real-world information we can ‘feed’ them, the better their performance, or the better their predictions will be. #tundraecology #ecosystemrespiration #arcticresearch #climatewarming #carboncycle #ecosystemresponse #soilhealth #microbialcommunity #environmentalresearch #climateimpact #globalchange #sciencecommunication #researchfindings #ecologicalscience #climatestudy #scientificinsights #environmentaldynamics #warmingexperiments #opentopchamber #internationaltundraexperiment @umeauniversitet @kuleuven @fwovlaanderen @dfornatlan @universityofgothenburg & many other research partners *Maes, S. In the dark and cold of the Arctic polar night, where food resources are scarce, jellyfish emerge as a crucial food source for marine amphipods. This groundbreaking research, conducted by scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany, sheds light on the previously underestimated role of jellyfish in Arctic ecosystems. The findings, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, reveal that amphipods not only feast on 'jelly-falls' of dead jellyfish but also prey on live jellyfish. This discovery challenges the traditional view of jellyfish as a trophic dead-end and highlights their significance in sustaining marine life during challenging environmental conditions. "Jellyfish are thought to be typically poor in nutrients but are nevertheless an important food source for amphipods during the Arctic polar night," says Annkathrin Dischereit, lead author of the study. 🌡️—Here’s what we did*…—🌡️ We compared respiration data from inside open-top chambers (OTCs) with measurements taken outside these chambers. OTCs act like mini-greenhouses, raising temperatures inside and giving us insights into how ecosystems respond to climate warming. 📈—Here are our key findings…—📈 -OTCs led to a temperature rise of 1.4°C in the air and 0.4°C in the soil (it got warmer inside the mini-greenhouses), along with a 1.6% decrease in soil moisture (it also got drier inside). -This warming triggered a remarkable 30% increase in ecosystem respiration during the growing season compared to control plots without OTCs or warming. Respiration refers to the carbon released by plants and microbes during their activities. -The warming effect on respiration persisted for at least 25 years, as far as our datasets could track. -When digging deeper, we found that the extra carbon release came from both the soil (busy roots and microbes belowground) and the vegetation (active plants aboveground). -We found that the impact of warming on respiration varied depending on soil conditions like nitrogen and pH. Areas with less nitrogen in the soil and with stimulated activity in plants and microbes due to warming released more carbon through respiration. ❄️—Check out our next post to learn what these numbers mean for our precious tundra ecosystems worldwide…—❄️ #tundraecology #ecosystemrespiration #arcticresearch #climatewarming #carboncycle #ecosystemresponse #soilhealth #microbialcommunity #environmentalresearch #climateimpact #globalchange #sciencecommunication #researchfindings #ecologicalscience #climatestudy #scientificinsights #environmentaldynamics #warmingexperiments #opentopchamber #internationaltundraexperiment @umeauniversitet @kuleuven @fwovlaanderen @dfornatlan @universityofgothenburg & many other research partners *Maes, S. 🌟 More Exciting News! 🌟 Today, our research on the impact of climate warming on ecosystem respiration is published in Nature*. With a team of more than 70 scientists, we united data from 56 tundra warming experiments across four continents to see how much more carbon will be released from the soil and vegetation as the climate warms. 🌡️ Our study is important because it investigates how the large stocks of carbon in tundra soils might release even more carbon due to climate warming, which could worsen the effects of climate change. We did not just measure how much carbon will be additionally released with warming; we also explored the factors that drive the variation in carbon release within tundra ecosystems. Introducing the team! (Part 3) Charles has been working in the laboratory since the beginning of 2021. He has taken part in several field campaigns, for various projects, which have led him to visit different communities in the Arctic and in Iceland. For the past two years, he has been working mainly on his master’s project, which focuses on coastal hazards in the Ausuittuq community. For several decades, this community has noted geomorphological and environmental changes along its coastline. Since the 1950s, the beach bordering the hamlet has seen a significant reduction in its surface area. Charles is therefore interested in investigating and defining the causes of coastal erosion and submersion hazards. He wants to produce an operational coastal water level prediction system for the community, to map different scenarios of storm events that could generate the hazards … #uqar #clicuqar #northernresearch #polarknowledgecanada #polarknowledge #savoirpolairecanada #savoirpolaire #geomorphology #canadianhigharctic #arcticscience #arcticresearch

Float your boat! Through the International Arctic buoy Program and Educator Fellow Keegan Heron’s collaboration with Researcher Fellow Ignatius Rigor, Keegan’s students were able to engage in the Float your Boat program. They painted the boats which were set out on the Arctic Sea Ice along with sea ice buoys. Boats were arranged in a “whale tail” design that they created in the ice, along with some other boats from some talented young artists in Florida. Students can track the boats while on the ice through buoy location and when the ice melts they are set adrift on the ocean. Each boat has a serial number, and if anyone were to one day find a boat washed up on a beach, they could document and log where they found the boat on the internet. On the ice! Educator Fellow Keegan Heron spent a week on the ice with Researcher Fellow Ignatius Rigor learning about sea ice and helping with two days of programing for local 8th grade students in Utqiagvik, AK. Here are a few of the experiences created for the students: Photo 1: At the traditional knowledge station, students practiced harpooning a “whale”. Photo 2: Measuring the albedo of different color jackets of students (black = 0, white = 1). Photo 3: Using an underwater camera to look at the bottom of the ocean floor from a hole that was dug 3 feet into the ice. Photo 4: Viewing diatoms (circle and neuron-like organisms that photosynthesize) and Acoel flatworms (that eat diatoms) living in the sea ice and collected from an ice core. Photo 5: Sunset over the Arctic Ocean. Photo 6: And Keegan got a glimpse at the Northern Lights. #polarsteam #polarsteamteam #wherecuriositythrives #nsffunded #educator #educatoropportunity #teachers #teacher #sciencecenter #museumeducator #communitycollege #faculty #professionaldevelopment #arcticresearch #sciencelesson #sciencelessons #educators #teachscience #teachart #arteducation #educationmatters #artisscience #steam #polarscience #researcher #broaderimpacts #scientist

*work in progress* Tracing the spatial influence of cryogenic materials within an anthropogenically modified landscape. ~ Last February I visited the Lunheim Quarry in Tromsø twice within one weekend. One day temperatures were around -5C, two days later they were +5C. Within this span I documented and learned from the frozen and melting conditions as part of my diploma methodology. In re-visiting this work I hope to further document the spatial and sensorial qualities of these processes as a micro study of climate change’s influence on extractive landscapes. - #arcticresearch #tromsø #landscapearchitecture #architecture #geography

Gender equality is a fundamental human right and component of sustainable development. As the Arctic undergoes rapid ecological, social and economic changes, the importance of gender and diversity issues has become increasingly evident. However, there is no one definition or understanding of gender and gender equality in the Arctic. And to achieve gender equality is to embrace the diversity of gender experiences according to Dr. Malgorzata ‘Gosia’ Smieszek-Rice, co-lead of the Pan-Arctic Report on Gender Equality in the Arctic and postdoctoral researcher at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. _____ #GenderEquality #SustainableDevelopment #DiversityInclusion #GenderDiversity #ArcticResearch #ArcticCommunity #GenderStudies

We already know that the receding sea-ice is opening up new shipping routes across the Central Arctic Ocean. Published in Ocean and Coastal Management, this review by Qi et al (2024) assessed 75 existing articles and found three key areas where shipping activity can have significant impact on the Arctic: 1. Impact on water bodies 💧 2. Impact of air emissions 💨 3. Impact on animal survival 🦭 The researchers further identified gaps in the knowledge, where more research is needed, such as Arctic environmental and ecological baseline surveys and the implications of Arctic shipping on aboriginal health.
