Such a joy to have time at the Yankovich Road Fire with artist @nikki.lindt. I was familiar with Nikki’s beautiful paintings but totally new to her sound work. Nikki took a recording of the burned and dried out duff layer while we listened, pondered, and wandered between the soft green spruce saplings that dot the ground. It was astonishing to hear how resonant and drum-like the dry duff was… and also how different a burned tree sounds compared to a live tree. Nikki is working on a new public art piece for Fairbanks and I’m so excited to see how it evolves!

Oft stecken die innovativen Forschungsansätze noch in den Kinderschuhen, funktionieren noch nicht gut in einer Therapie in einer Klinik - dann denke ich mir dazu mögliche Zukunftsszenarien aus und wir arbeiten mit deren Konsequenzen im Plot weiter. Unsere beiden Thriller werden als „Near Future Thriller“ eingeordnet. Was wäre, wenn? Die Realität ist die schönste Simulation! Grundlagenforschung hat auch etwas von Sciencefiction, weil wir uns an neue Herausforderungen der Gesellschaft wagen. Ein Leben in Gesundheit ohne Infektionskrankheiten und Pandemien verursacht durch Klimawandel und Artensterben ist dabei noch eine Wunschvorstellung. Es gibt noch viel zu verstehen für die Forschenden. UND noch viel zu lernen für unsere Gesellschaft, die mit diesen neuen Erkenntnissen Schritt halten und aus der Komfortzone kommen muss. Polygonmuster) die immer deutlicher hervortreten und in denen sich schließlich Seen bilden. Permafrost ist gefrorener Boden. Damit er unter die Definition fällt, muss die Temperatur des Bodens mindestens zwei Jahre lang unter 0 Grad Celsius liegen. Der Permafrost in der Arktis ist teilweise mehrere Jahrtausende alt. Wenn Permafrostboden taut, werden die Treibhausgase Kohlenstoffdioxid und Methan freigesetzt, die die globale Erwärmung weiter beschleunigen. Das Schmelzen von Bodeneis verändert das gesamte arktische Ökosystem und führt außerdem zu einem Absacken des Bodens mit verheerenden Auswirkungen auf Gebäude und Straßen. ❄️💧 Die @undercovereisagenten möchten neue Erkenntnisse zu Ausmaß und Geschwindigkeit des Permafrost-Tauens gewinnen. Dazu nehmen Schüler*innen einer arktischen Gemeinde in Aklavik (Kanada) Luftbilder mit Drohnen auf. Sie sind unmittelbar von den Veränderungen der Landschaft betroffen und wissen, wo diese stattfinden und vor allem welche Veränderungen für sie relevant sind. Mithilfe einer App können Bürger*innen in der Arktis, in Deutschland und weltweit die Landschaftsveränderungen auf den Luftbildern kartieren und klassifizieren. 📸🗺️ UndercoverEisAgenten ist eines von vielen Projekten auf unserer Plattform, in dem Bürger*innen zu Klimawandel und Umweltveränderungen forschen. 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘵, Jorge Peris’s second solo exhibition with Nicodim, is an invocation of the apocalypse, a prayer sowed with salty tears. Relics of human existence populate the gallery: colored glasses are festively stacked in memoriam of some long-evacuated party; slightly knotted and twisted ropes hang themselves from the ceiling, would-be nooses whose accompanying necks disintegrated in an undefined past. Crystalized salt unifies it all into one cohesive sculpture, a monument to an Earth that once was. Recent research from AGU indicates that the northern permafrost region, traditionally considered a carbon sink, is now emitting more greenhouse gases than it absorbs. Thawing permafrost releases greenhouse gasses stored within the frozen ground and ice, contributing to global warming. Within the first three metres of permafrost in the northern hemisphere lies an estimated amount of 1 trillion metric tons of carbon and 55 billion metric tons of nitrogen, which are both potent greenhouse gases. Between 2000-2020, an estimated amount of 38 million metric tons of methane and 670,000 metric tons of nitrogen were released into the atmosphere. In comparison to a major industrialised country like Switzerland, which emitted 39 million metric tons in a single year in 2016, these emissions can appear small. However, they just might accelerate the pace at which our world warms. This discovery provides evidence that the global climate tipping point for boreal permafrost thaw could be closer to being breached. #OnTheBeamlines: Gas hydrates are a crystalline solid made up of water and gas. Similar in appearance to ice, they often contain huge amounts of methane. Gas hydrates are abundant on Earth and can be found in permafrost and the continental shelf. They are also present in space; recently, a large reservoir of methane hydrate was detected on Titan, a moon of Saturn. Gas hydrates need two key ingredients to form: extremely high pressure and extremely low temperature. According to @usaskartsci @usask researcher John Tse, the explosion that triggered the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, was in fact, caused by the formation and then ignition of gas hydrates. Because the methane trapped within these structures is being released from the permafrost by global warming, they represent a serious threat to the environment. Tse and colleagues used the CLS to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the formation of gas hydrates – specifically between gas and water – on Earth and in space. “The thermodynamic condition is you need gas pressure, and you need a cold environment,” says Tse, a Tier I Canada Research Chair of Materials Science and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. “But in outer space, there is no equilibrium. The temperature is very cold, but there’s no pressure. So why is it still formed? The mechanism has to be different.” The new knowledge gained through Tse’s research could help prevent blockages in gas transport pipelines, and deepen our understanding of how planets are formed. Il permafrost è un terreno tipico delle regioni fredde ad esempio dell’estremo Nord Europa, della Siberia e dell’America settentrionale dove il suolo è perennemente ghiacciato, dove la temperatura è costantemente sotto lo zero. Gelo perenne. Per tutta la vita una membrana di gelo ricopre, senza quasi mai incrinarsi, la donna che qui si mette a nudo. La protegge da un’intima fragilità che la costringe a vivere sempre sull’orlo del precipizio, mentre la violenza del mondo la colpisce senza tregua, in un precario equilibrio tra le aspettative e i giudizi che gli altri le proiettano addosso e la provvisorietà, la casualità delle strade che sceglie per sé. Come il permafrost che protegge con il suo gelo permanente la vita del pianeta, questo strato la scherma da una realtà percepita ora come menzogna che disgusta, ora come minaccia da cui fuggire. Perennemente inadeguata di fronte alle convenzioni di un mondo che non sente suo, perennemente alla ricerca di una crepa che infranga quel gelo che allo stesso tempo la protegge e la intrappola.
