The monastery played a significant role in the Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule during the Cretan uprising of 1866. 943 Greeks took refuge in the monastery. For the victorious Ottoman government, the ‘holocaust of Arkadi’ was merely a cause for celebration, at least until it was struck by a wave of outrage from the international community - ‘… the agony becomes a triumph, and this heroic monastery, which fought like a fortress, dies like a volcano’ thundered Victor Hugo. The outcome was the granting of a form of constitution to Crete in 1868, the start of a long journey that would eventually see de facto independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1897-8 and union with Greece in 1913. Some parts of the monastery have been restored or rebuilt since 1866 though this section on the north of the courtyard seems to be untouched #crete #arkadimonastery
Ottoman forces assaulted Arkadi on 9 November 1866, putting to the sword the remaining defenders, now low on ammunition. At the far end of the complex hundreds of non-combatants, mostly women and children, had taken shelter in a storeroom now being used as a gunpowder magazine, believing that they faced enslavement and the harem. As the monastery was overrun the Cretan patriot Konstantinos Giaboudakis put a flame to the powder. In August 1866, protesting against Ottoman oppression and despairing of intervention by the European great powers, Crete arose in revolt. An Ottoman army some 15,000 strong was sent to crush the rising, centred upon the monastery. Around 250 armed Cretans prepared to defend it and three times that number of non-combatants took refuge within its walls. Because cannons, within a day the main gate had been destroyed. Das Arkadi-Kloster (griechisch Μονή Αρκαδίου) ist ein orthodoxes Kloster auf Kreta. Es ist das bedeutendste Nationaldenkmal der Insel. Das Kloster spielte eine herausragende Rolle im kretischen Kampf um Unabhängigkeit vom Osmanischen Reich. Die Klosterkirche war bis zur Einführung des Euro auf dem 100-Drachmen-Schein abgebildet. Wir haben zum Glück eine Zeit erwischt, in dem keine oder nur sehr wenige Touristen auf dem Klostergelände waren. This part of the E4 trail starts from the historical monastery of Arkadi, heads to antiquities of the ancient town Eleftherna and then concludes at the village Margarites. The highlights of the route include the monastery of Arkadi, the ancient necropolis and the Roman cisterns in Eleftherna, the Archaeological Museum of Eleftherna and the traditional houses of Margarites. We start from Arkadi monastery, where the holocaust of 1866 took place and head to the east, following the yellow-black signs of the E4 trail. We reach ancient Eleftherna and visit the huge Roman cisterns, the tower and the necropolis of the town. We can make a small detour and visit the ancient bridge built with the ekforic system (triangular). We leave Eleftherna and head eastwards to Margarites, where we finish our course. In Margarites we should walk in the scenic alleys and watch the nice traditional houses, see the traditional ceramics, visit the temple of Agios Ioannis with the medieval frescoes and stroll in the monastery of Saint Gedeon. This part of the European trail E4 connects Armeni to Arkadi, with its highlights being the Minoan Peak sanctuary of Vrissinas, the valley of Potami dam and Prasses gorge and finally the historical monastery of Arkadi. Due to being quite long, the route an be divided in two parts, from Armeni to Prasses and from Prasses to Arkadi, or to use car for some parts. We start our course from the picturesque village of Armeni and walk to the Postminoan Cemetery, where it is worth to pay a visit. We continue to the east and ascend on the mount of Vrissinas, the top of which hosted a Minoan sanctuary and today there is the chapel of Agio Pnevma (Holy Spirit). We cross the mountain and descend with southeast direction till the village Sellia. From Sellia we head northeast towards Prasses village, see Simas bridge at Kaminolakos gorge on our right hand and end at Agia Fotini. We can also visit Prasses village and Prassano gorge. This is the first subpart of the route, that can be walked independently. For the second subpart of the route, from Prasses we head south and come in close proximity to Potami dam. We can visit the dam lake, one of the most beautiful places in Crete. From the dam, we ascend to Gargani mountain and then cross Harkia and Kavoussi, before finishing at Arkadi monastery, where one of the most tragic pages of Greek history took place in 1866.
