Photography Coverage of the Stanford GSB's 'Executive Challenge' Event: I've been doing the photography coverage of the Stanford Graduate School of Business's 'Executive Challenge' event for around 12-13 years now - a terrific event, always challenging, fun, and full of positive energy - working hard to capture many of the key moments and the community spirit of the students, the faculty, and the alumni and to tell their story. Last December over 400 first-year Stanford Graduate School of Business MBAs immersed themselves in this annual event - the culminating event of their fall quarter class, “Leadership Labs,” that gives the students a chance to simulate real-world leadership challenges and put what they’ve learned into action. During the event, the student squads bring 3 case studies to life – stepping into the shoes of senior executives and presenting their solutions to the real-world challenge. Each round is judged by a panel of alumni, who provide real-time feedback on students’ decisions, behaviors, and presentations. Coming back to judge the Executive Challenge is a highlight for alumni. More than 200 alumni judges journeyed back to campus from 17 states across the US and seven other countries. Venturing into the world of brutalist stage designs, i chose to mold drama with minimalism. Our canvas: raw emotions of confinement, hopelessness, and subservience. 🌊Confinement: A semi-circular audience platform, ensnared by water, envelopes the main stage, evoking a potent mix of claustrophobia and grandeur. 🖤 Hopelessness: The stage isn't just a stage. It's a hyperbolic paraboloid, angled almost at 90 degrees. This deliberate design traps the performer, giving them a choice - to dance facing their deepest fears or confront their harshest critic, reflected either by the onlooking audience or the surrounding water's mirror-like facade. 💃 Subservience: Crafted from slippery materials, the stage dictates the performer's movements in stark contrast to the rough textures beneath the audience.
