Joy is....... A Segedunum Duck Cup!!! 😁💕 Thank You to 'Potted History'. EEK!!! This little 'Duck Cup' fills me with a RIDICULOUS level of joy! I decided my 'Roman Paintbox' also needed a tea mug ( I know tea is not a historically correct drink for Romano British people - unless you read Asterix in Britain!!) As an artist, and reenactor, I am a bit tea obsessed, I can't function without a brew! I've always wanted one of these mugs since I saw an article about it. To find out more about Segedunum Roman Fort, where the original pot sherd was found, follow this link - https://segedunumromanfort.org.uk/ One theory about this delightful cup, is that it was made for a child, as the image of the duck is very rare on this type of pottery. Anyhoo - having decided I would get one from @Potted History , I discovered that because they use authentic historical glazes , that that version of the mug wasn't suitable for modern tea drinking, so I requested one with a 'tea proof' glaze. That's the beauty of commissioning something hand made from people who really know their historical pottery. So Graham Taylor and Sarah Lord created my perfect reenactment mug, and it's PERFECT... I have been regularly testing it, and it is definitely one of my favorite reenactment items....apart from 'Little Bob' - my sword - but that's another post. To find out more about the Duck Cup and 'Potted History' follow this link - ( great shopping!!) https://potted-history.co.uk/collections/roman/products/segedunum-duck-cup #pottedhistory #HandMade #Pottery #Segedunum #Romanhistory #HadriansWall #Arteology #ParkinthePast

EEK!!.... Our FIRST art workshops are up on the website!! I've been a bit quiet recently due to be being extremely busy getting our Art Workshop/Studio room all sorted for our very first proper workshops with a den of our very own!! Rob has been brilliant helping me to paint the room and move furniture - we even had help from some Romans! The room isn't quite there yet - but now its a case of moving a RIDICULOUS amount of paint and brushes and general arty gubbins into the room, and also make it look welcoming - we even got new colourful rag rugs for it!! ( probably didn't need them - but I'm a sucker for a good rag rug!! Roman Paint Box Project ..... Pattern Book! I'm ridiculously excited...my Nerdy little soul is well chuffed ( as we say up North!) Eh Hem! I've now got a lovely pile of 20 'pages' of beach wood sheets, bought from a model shop, drilled by my ace dad , to Gesso and turn into, what I hope will be a replica (ish) Roman Pattern book for Fresco designs. I've got this far with help and advice from various Archaeologists , who between then described what to my mind looked like a Roman Codex book. I can't find out if the Copy/Pattern Books where Papyrus or wood - My personal take on this one, is it somehow got to Britain, so wood seemed the better option for now - If better information comes along, I will re make/ alter it to fit whatever the current evidence is - So this one is really a prototype. If anyone does have better information, I'd love to hear from you. Right, better start with Gesso!! 😁 #Arteology #Education #RomanFresco #Learn #Teach #Fun #Art #Artist #Research #EXARC

Fun with Frescoes! And Fort Fundraising for Britains Big Fort Build at Park in the Past. ❤ Should point out that technically this isn't a mini Fresco! I'm currently copying the original, beautiful Roman Fresco design of peaches, onto a piece of Oak from the building of the Fabrica at Park in the Past. My artwork is Secco - this means its wet paint on a dry background - in this case its on a Gesso ground. Fresco is when wet paint is applied to damp lime plaster - an altogether more complex method of painting, perfect for walls. Frescoes often had the details and highlights added to them using the Secco method - somy painting actually isn't too far off the mark! The paint is exactly the same type of pigments and egg binder that would have been used 2000 years ago all across the Roman Empire, and Greece. ( The Romans learned, what became their art style from the ancient Greeks) I'm hoping to sell these little Roman 'Fresco' paintings to help raise funds for Britains Big Fort Build at Park in the Past. Horsing around! Currently investigating Iron Age and Roman horse harness and shoes - very interesting stuff, that I'll post about shortly. I've always been around horses, owned horses, and am also a qualified riding instructor - so horses are my 'thing'. I've also always admired Mike Loads - Have a look at this - http://www.mikeloades.com/wp-content/uploads/British_Chariot.pdf Mike Loads explores historical weapons and, of course horses. I'm so lucky to be able to indulge in a bit of history hunting with horses - though not to the same amazing level of Mike Loads. Its fascinating how horses have played such an enormous role in human history , being everything from hunted for food, to carrying warriors into battle, hunting, farming and recreation. Humans really couldn't have got to where we are now without the horse, and other animals used as pack animals, plough animals and transport. Anyway, enough of my ponderings, better get on with my research! #horse #Horses #history #riding #lovehorses #horsepower #Arteology #discover

Painty Pondering and Cheese! 🧀🎨 I'm currently doing some research into Iron Age & Roman shield painting - and by default, general paint in the 1st Century AD or thereabouts. I'm planning to paint a shield and have it used in combat to see how the painted decoration does, or doesn't stand up to a good bashing! I also have another shield to paint that won't get bashed! So at least one will still look pretty after this experiment! I'm now looking into the wonderful world of Casein Paint - the term Casein comes from the Latin - Caseus - meaning Cheese. So Casein paint can be called either 'Cheese Paint', or as its actually known, 'Milk Paint' There's a wonderful recipe for it in Aidan Harts beautiful book 'Techniques of Icons and Wall Paintings' - thus - 5 parts Dry Curd Cheese, 1 part Lime Putty. Mix and leave to stand for a few hours, then dilute to the correct consistency for the paint. The colour is added in the form of dry pigments. This concoction will produce a lactic plastic ( Casein) binder that will behave in a similar way to modern plastic acrylic paint, but much better for the environment! This is the same type of paint that was used on Roman shields ,and other items. (Thank you Sergio Escudero for pointing me in that direction) The paint looks like modern Gouache, with a soft chalky finish, which is why it's also used in Secco painting ( wet paint on a dry lime plaster wall) on top of, or instead of Frescos ( wet paint on a wet lime plaster wall) So I'll be off the buy some cottage cheese to mix with my pigments - if it doesn't work out, at least I can eat it on a baked spud! ( The cheese, not the paint!) #experimental #artist #cheese #paint #painter #historical #research #Arteology #fun

Timescape Museum in Rhayader. ( CARAD, East Street Rhayader, LD6 5ER) Thank you so much for inviting me to come and play with ancient paints at this lovely family local history event. We had a fantastic time, with so many people of all ages coming to discover natural earth pigments, and enjoying using them to create pretty painted wood disks. Everyone also made their own paint brushes too. These workshops are great for a wide range of age groups and abilities, and help people to discover the history of paint, and colour, how to make their own natural paint in the same way our ancestors did, and learn about simple geology, ancient trade routes, where the colours come from, geography, and environmental impact of some pigments. It's also a great way to encourage problem solving and manual dexterity - not to mention sharing ideas about favourite colours and designs. And I got to set up my little van home in the car park, and made Rushlights... which I am ridiculously pleased about! This is an amazing museum in Rhayader, and so well worth a visit when it opens fully - we were lucky enough to have a 'private viewing' - and its fantastic, so worth the look. Also not far from the beautiful Elan Valley - if you like history and walking, this is definitely the spot for you! #Timescape #Rhayader #History #Art #artist #paint #painting #Arteology #Wales

Madeley Cycle shelter mural. From yellow horse to pit pony ( ish)! I've been doing more work on this mural today, for Madeley council. It's been so hot that the paint was drying on the brush and rollers, making blending tones really tricky! I often mix colours on the painting while the paint is wet - not today!! The whole mural is going to be miners and pit ponies, along with some information about a truly horrendous mining accident in the 1800s that killed nine men - three where only boys, one was only 12 years old! The complete mural will be about local history in this once mining community, and a memorial to the 'Nine Men of Madeley'. So, not ancient paint today - but still history. #art #artist #pony #horse #hot #murals #mining #localhistory #Arteology #paint #painter

Archaeological dig days out - Free days out! Nesscliffe in Shropshire Did you know that very often when a dig takes place the archaeologists will run tours of the site? These are usually advertised via local news papers and online news outlets - just keep an eye open in your local area or through local museums and council websites. We visited the Nesscliffe Hillfort Dig in Shropshire - Its a fantastic and nationally important site. We visited the dig last year too, so It was great to see how the dig has progressed and to discuss theories of the site with archaeologists. Nesscliffe is also home to the now world famous 'NessGlyph ' - a small apparently horned figure carved into a rock. The Nesscliffe site was part of the Cornovie lands, and as their name translates into 'Horned ones' there a theory that the tiny figure was doodled by someone, and possibly is a warrior in a horned helmet - there are quite a lot of examples of Iron Age horned helmets - google is your friend! Enjoy the photos of the dig and do follow the links to find more information on the dig https://www.facebook.com/NesscliffeCamp 👈 How to visit Nescliffe 👇 http://www.shropshiresgreatoutdoors.co.uk/site/nesscliffe-hills-and-the-cliffe-countryside-heritage-site/ Blog with more info coming soon! #education #walk #free #visit #daysout #archeolgy #arteology

Mud, Mud....Glorious Mud!!! Mud is one of my favourite things....and it could be yours too! Earth Pigments are just that...mud...! Though not commonly available on the high street, Earth Pigment paints are becoming more popular, as more people are discovering this ancient source of colour. Earth pigments are simply coloured earth, that occur naturally all over the world. Terra Verte for example is a beautiful Green Earth from Italy and France. In the UK we have a stunning variety of Ochres, ranging from deep purple tones to bright yellows. Many traditional old buildings, particularly in Southern England are plastered with Earth Pigment coloured render. Earth Pigments are actually very easy to use, and can easily be mixed a variety of 'Binders' ( the base that sticks the paint to the surface) such as egg yolk or egg white, honey, Gum Arabic or oil, or even plaster - they can also be mixed with acrylic mediums, but if you want to be more environmentally friendly and avoid microplastics, stick with the natural binders instead. A great new innovation in the UK is that some companies have began to use Ochre pigments extracted from redundant mines. These closed mines still have water being pumped out of them, often that water contains various ochres and small amounts of heavy metals such as Titanium. ( Also used in paint) Originally this was categorised as industrial waste by the Environment Agency, and went into landfill. Millions of tons of beautiful, non toxic Ochre was just being dumped, until various concrete and brick manufacture's' decided it could be used to colour their products. Artist also realised it could be used by them too. Now the Coal Board ( as was) is lobbying for the Ochre to be downgraded from being industrial waste, in order for it to able to be used in a creative way - not just dumped. Good for the environment, and great for artists! If you want to learn more on one of our workshops just visit - https://www.arteology.online/whittington #learn #nature #natural #organic #earth #arteology #artist #art

Creative Days Out ( free places to visit!) Taliesin Ben Beirdd ("Taliesin, Chief of Bards" or chief of poets). Llyn Geirionydd is a truly magical place, and a bit off the beaten track. So if you like getting 'lost' in beautiful North Wales, this is a trip worth doing. Llyn Geirionydd is reputedly the birthplace of the 6th Century Welsh Bard, Taliesin. The monument to commemorate this was put in place in 1850 by Lord Willoughby de Eresby of Gwydir Castle. In 1863 Gwilym Cowlyd held the annual Arwest here - an event similar to an Eisteddfod. Taliesin is a fascinating character - he was a 6th century Bard to Welsh royalty and wrote a huge number of poems and satires, including a body of Christian poetry that tend not to get a mention. From the 11th century onward he became a rather mythical figure, and in the 16th century he was included in the now famous tale of Ceridwen, as Gwion Bach - this tale was based on fragments of his own writing. And... I got paint!! - lovely yellow ochre, can't wait to process it to use - my very own Taliesin Yellow!! To find out more about Taliesin, and Llyn Geirionydd follow the links below. I LOVE castles and Medieval Architecture and history ... but I HATE heights! This castle has both in abundance! Luckily my amazing partner is a hypnotherapist and with his help I actuary made it to the battlements and even up a VERY high tower!! If you can stand heights - I would 'highly' recommend visiting this stunning castle. I'm so inspired by it that I've even made my own tiny rock garden after seeing all the tiny alpine type plants growing on the castle walls! We created this section of a pretend Roman Dining Room wall with Dionysus and a fruit bowl on a plastered board. This panel was painted by all the children, and some parents who wanted to try painting Roman Style. We've had children who thought they couldn't paint learning how to mix egg tempera paints, how to load and dress a brush and mixing tones and then doing a FANTASTIC job of adding to this panel. It was so wonderful seeing them teaching their siblings and parents how to paint in a Classical way on a plaster wall. I am so proud of this piece of finished artwork - all I did at the end was to tidy some of the edges a bit and add the white highlights the rest is COMPLETELY painted by the children - and THAT'S what Arteology is about - making history and Art FUN! If you would like this as a workshop in your school or learning group just ping me an email at [email protected] We will also be running this, and other family art & history workshops at Park in the Past very soon - just keep an eye our Facebook page and website for details. #art #kidsart #kids #learning #teaching #fun #education #arteology

Arteology at Park in the Past Fagl Lane, Hope, Ll12 9HB We will be at the Auxilia Event this weekend 2nd June to Sun 4th June 2023 - why not pop in and help paint. We've been having an amazing time at Park in the Past running our hands on painting experience. Our lovely visitors have been learning about Roman Frescos and Secco painting. We've been chatting about the beautiful Fayum Portraits and how they were made, and discussing the weird, wonderful, and sometimes dangerous world of ancient art. We will be there from Friday 2nd June to Sunday 4th June at the Auxilia Roman Event - come and visit, it's fantastic, the Roman Fort is full of Romans demonstrating living history - not just any Roman reenactors, but international Roman reenactors from all over Europe! Auxilia Event at Park in the Past (Fagl Lane, Hope, LL12 9HB) 27th May - 4th June 2023 10am -6pm What could be more perfect than getting to paint a Roman 'wall panel' using the Secco method, inside a Roman Fort? We've had lots of very lovely children, stealth learning all about Classical Roman Art, and creating it using ancient paints and techniques to create a plaster on wood section of an imaginary Roman Villa dining room wall - complete with Dionysus. The best bit was when a little boy who had been on one of my previous workshops came over, he not only recognised the type of paint we used, but remembered how to mix it and how to use it, and could tell me the historical facts he learned last time- and THAT is what this is really about, children learn so well through play and exploration, I am so proud of him. Come and join us at Park in the Past for their Auxilia Event - we will be there this weekend, with paint...lots of paint! #artist #art #history #teach #learn #fun #arteology

Romano- British Wall Painting. ( New workshop dates coming soon!) Often when I talk about Roman wall painting, people only know of the famous and beautifully preserved frescoes of Pompeii - very few people are aware of the equally stunning, but not so well preserved Romano British wall paintings, right here in the UK. These stunning paintings were done in the same way as their Mediterranean counterparts. The artists were very accomplished, and were painting wet pigments onto wet plaster to create these vibrant and incredibly long lasting wall paintings. Fresco painting doesn't dry in the same way as as normal paint evaporation - the pigments actually bond with the lime in the plaster, and become part of the wall, not just pigment on the surface. If you look at the walls of many old British Churches, you will see tool marks left behind by people chipping the plaster frescoes off the walls during the Reformation - they couldn't just scrub the images off the walls. Follow these links to find out about the wall paintings of Lullingstone Villa and St Albans. https://www.stalbanshistory.org/archaeology/the-societys-contribution-to-archaeology/dr-norman-davey-and-recovering-roman-wall-plaster https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/lullingstone-roman-villa/history/ Have fun watching paint dry! #arteology #history #art #artist #paint #painter #roman

Pens. Do you always find, you never have a pen when you need one? Well, did you know you make pens out of reeds? Reed pens were used all over the world for thousands of years - so I'm making some to use in our workshops, and also teaching people how to make their own. Reed pens are great for drawing with, as well writing. Once you know how to make a pen, you realise pen making materials are everywhere... you just need the ink, now where to find that!? Much Fun. #pen #pens #art #artist #artteacher #teaching #fun #learn #learning #schools #homeschool #interest #crafts #make #maker #making #creating #creater #teach #teacher #teaching #share #parkinthepast #arteology

Just look at these gorgeous little beauties!! ❤❤❤ I'm currently adding to and expanding my Iron Age wardrobe/ British Romano , and felt the need of some 'bling'. The black bead is a copy of one found at Wroxeter, not too far from me, so I felt that this particular bead would fit my character perfectly due to location, and time period. The other beads are historically accurate generic Iron Age beads. If you are particularly nerdy (like me) you can read various archeological reports about bead findings density across the UK - it seems that for whatever reason, our Iron Age ancestors on the whole, were not festooned with beads, but seem to wear a bead or two or perhaps used them to decorate a bag string or belt end rather than in long thick strings of beads. I'm going to have this black one as pride of place, possibly as a single bead on a necklace, and perhaps another three as a bracelet - though also perhaps on my tablet weave belt....much fun! Iron Age beady loveliness from Tillerman Beads - have a look at their page. https://www.facebook.com/TillermanBeads #jewelry #jewelrygram #beads #glass #glassbeads #colours #pretty #jewelrylover #handmade #handmadeuk #love #beautiful #blue #arteology #history #Celts #celtic #celticjewelry
