It begins today! The final two artists to be welcomed are James and Hetty who have come from the United States to join us for the next three weeks. Hetty Baiz has been an artist her whole life and went on to study it at university. Her latest pieces are ambiguous portraits characterized by interwoven layers of image, color and material. Hetty hopes to begin an archaeological research project of sorts that will provide the foundation for a series of mixed media constructions inspired by the symbols, colors, patterns and iconography of this ancient culture. James Perry began making sculptures in high school and immediately knew it was what he would do with his life. He works in wood and is fascinated by forms that are both mathematical, like parabolas or spirals, and that also appear in nature, like waves or flight trajectories. During this residency James hopes to spend time with local wood artisans and learn about their processes so that they can inspire his future work. The Winter residency season begins on Monday and we are excited to welcome Candice and Chaimaa to Green Olive Arts. Candice Salyers is a dancer from the United States whose work integrates contemporary dance with issues of importance to women, environmental preservation, and humanitarian concern. She was so inspired and moved by her previous residency at Green Olive Arts that she wanted to return with a project that would allow her to intentionally collaborate with a Moroccan artist and hopefully interact a bit more with the community. She dances to bring dignity to human life. Chaimaa Amchi is a Tetouani artist, a graduate of the Tetouan Institute of Fine Arts, as well as European Higher School of Art in Brittany, France (EESAB). She is a recipient of one of our 2024 Emerging Moroccan Artist Awards. She is both artist and scholar, with a primary focus on the realms of videography and photography, intertwined with forays into installation and sculpture. This residency will give her the invaluable opportunity to immerse herself in the very environment where she began her artistic journey. Anangookwe Wolf is a poet who from Alaska who is inspired by diverse cultures. For the last several years their work has covered familial narratives, cultural inheritance, and relations with the land. To seamlessly bleed each poem into the next, they hope to publish this series into a small zine that can be distributed at their reservationâs community house. A huge part of my week and a half in Morocco was spent learning how to add more feel into less âstuff.â How to navigate a page (or pages) in a sketchbook to include exactly what you want to include, how you want to include it, and why. To sit in a scene and determine what is important for you and the artwork you create. Realizing that your perspective and creative eye is magic, and is worth so much more than a scene you are looking at. Realizing that you donât have to have much at all to create a burning magic in yourself, with others, and in your artwork. To look at something as radiant as a unfolding exotic plant, focusing so much on it, and finding that not much needs to be added to create a sense of scene. Finding so much more in so much less. I took bits and elements from several scenes while sitting on several rooftops in Essaouira and just kept adding them onto this page. I finally added a little color on the page during breakfast my last morning at Dar Loulema. This was page 3 of my sketchbook. I sat in the middle of the smelly, noisy, yet calm fish market and sketched the overhanging rooftops. At one point a kitten peeked over the edge of the roof, just as another practically newborn ginger kitten nearly came to sit on my lap for some unfound love. It smelled of rotting fish guts, every type of spice imaginable, and dust, if dust had a smell. I heard French, Arabic, Berber languages, men bartering for fish, men slashing fish open with machetes, people of all ages bartering for spices and bread, kids kicking a tattered ball while their parents were following close behind, and the sound of the soft, murmur slow bustle of yellow Moroccan slippers sliding across the uneven concrete ground. I sat in a straw/wooden chair, and all of this was going about me, calm demeanor yet chaotic everyday living, all while I sketched my interpretation of the skies above. Fish market, Essaouira 2019. Mohammed works in the dyers quater( SBariin) which was established in the 1100s, though has recently been restored. Not so long ago, in his relatively short time at SBariin, he would dye thread for weavers and carpet knotters. Nowadays its mostly recoloring clothes and sporadically there is a thread bundle load to be dyed. Sbariin, Fez medina well worth the visit, though stepping into the workshops and engaging with the artisans is where it truly shines. Spend a morning visiting the artisans with Culture Vultures.. . Local wool, naturally dyed. Hangs in an artisans studio in Ait Hamza in the middle Atlas mountains. It's rare these days to even find anyone who knows about natural dyes in the Moroccan crafts. There are organisations such as @the.anou and @peacecorpsmorocco trained artisans who have dabbled and passed on the skill and information.
