For too long, data collection and reporting practices have often failed to measure, reflect, and disaggregate the diversity of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) experiences. Swipe through to read about the new changes in race and ethnicity data collection standards. These new revisions include a requirement for federal agencies to collect more granular data beyond the revised minimum categories by default, in which those who select Asian will be asked to provide details by selecting or entering a racial/ethnic category. The 2030 U.S. Census will adopt these standards, as will all federal agencies within the next 5 years. "By splitting the collection of data into more specific categories, data disaggregation hopes to reveal and therefore address data inequity and allocate resources to vulnerable and historically underserved communities more accurately. For Asian Americans in particular, the umbrella term often perpetuates a stereotype of a pan-ethnic monolith and the model minority," writes Sarah Jinee Park (@fragile__things). Who else grew up in a household that doesnโt talk about money? ๐๐๐ปโโ๏ธ Mochi interviewed Berna Anat (@heyberna), financial educator and Financial Hype Woman, about her debut book โMoney Out Loud: All the Financial Stuff No One Taught Usโ (which will celebrate its first birthday ๐ next month!) Berna shared about her family, who โabsolutely did not talk about money. We were lower middle class. We went through the 2008 housing crisis, filed for bankruptcy, all of that, and still no talks about money, no acknowledgment.โ ๐คซ But whatโs most interesting is digging deeper โ and looking at how the entire financial system can impact your finances today. โA lot of what has happened to our ancestors financially was out of their control as well,โ Berna shared. ๐๏ธย An example is the Homestead Act, which gave 160 acres of land toย 1.6 million white families, but only 6,000 Black familiesย as a source of systemic oppression. Today, 30 percent of Americans are descendants of beneficiaries of the program, a majority of them white ๐ง โIt had more to do with power, with bigotry, with racism, with systemic oppression. Itโs incredibly important to understand the entire landscape so that at the very micro level, you stop blaming yourself entirely for all of your financial issues and all your familyโs financial issues ๐ And then at the macro level, you understand that it is not just about budgeting and saving and debt. The indigenous people of Mexico have incredibly talented weavers. This family let us into their home to learn about their unique style of fringe and feathers into their shawls (they mentioned they learned about the fringe / feathers from South East Asia - how beautiful that we are different, but still connected!). Each woman made all the clothing they are wearing! The woman weaving said it took her two months to make her stunning shirt. The trip to Mexico was part research/filming for my traditional clothing documentary. This subject brings me so much joy and excited to meet so many others that embrace their traditions. Becoming a better informed society is one of the keys ๐ to becoming a more inclusive society โ๐ผโ๐พโ๐ฟ Mochi writer Tria Wen interviewed Kisha A. Brown, Esq, who founded @JustisConnection โ the only online lawyer referral service showcasing the talent of Black lawyers โ in 2018. Kisha Brown spoke to Mochi Mag on the power of education and access: ๐ค๐ฝย โItโs imperative to recognize that for things to move in a more inclusive direction in this country, oftentimes weโve had to battle in the courts, ๐๏ธย Brown v. Board of Education [was put into motion] 30 years before that landmark case was decided. ๐ชดย Legal recourse is only one aspect of making progress in this country. ๐๏ธย There are many different ways we need to advance institutional systems so they are more reflective of and connected to the people. ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธย One way is to hold folks accountable to the law and to challenge the law. Thatโs where having access to solid legal counsel โ just having access, knowing where to go โ is a big step.โ And thatโs why Kisha founded Justis Connection: โI realized (in law school) that we as Black people do not have a concerted network that connects us. Catching up after a great, whirlwind adventure to Michoacรกn, Mexico with Flora. The trip (for me) was mostly about filming traditional weaving in the indigenous pueblos (itโs part of my traditional clothing documentary). However, I canโt deny I also enjoyed other incredible day trips. Such as, the breathtaking migration of the monarch butterflies! Getting to the butterfly sanctuaries was no easy task. It is a rigorous climb up 11,000 feet. It felt like a spiritual pilgrimage by the time we reached the top It was totally worth it! There were millions of butterflies. At points, it was a very emotional experience. Not only because the forest was beautiful and the monarchs were magical (we were told by our local guide that they believed the monarchs are our ancestors visiting us). But when I had moments to rest, I would remember that not even 5 years ago, I could not have done such a climb with my CRPS. Iโm truly grateful to have been able to go on such a bucket list adventure. And beyond happy I was able to do the hike with no issues. So glad I got to go with Flora!! We had such a great time. He came to the United States during a time when anti-Asian hate was rampant. This was the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act era, which banned all Chinese migration... However, those already in the States sold their papers back to people in China. The papers were bought by complete strangers who would then change their names and claim to be that personโs child. That was my great-grandfather. On paper, white immigration authorities renamed him Joe Suey, but that was never his real nameโฆ In his honor, I claimed my Asian Power by taking his paper surname, Zhou. Learning my history has granted me my truth. That is something I urge the Asian Diaspora here in the States and worldwide to claim as well: In order for us to build solidarity, we must know who we are first. What is my story? What is your story? The results are in and sadly, Back to Normal did not make the Oscar shortlist. We knew it was a long shot with such impressive competition, including shorts from big animation studios like Pixar and Disney as well as amazingly talented independent filmmakers and artists from around the world. Instead of hanging my head, I want to raise it up high and say again how incredibly proud I am of all of my crew. Making it to this point was already a huge accomplishment and eons further than I could have ever imagined. Iโm so grateful for everyone who has watched BTN and those who considered it for voting. The story of Back to Normal was inspired by my experiences during the pandemic, though I wanted to make it relevant and relatable to all who watch it because we all went through the pandemic together. BIO Cecilia De Jesus is a Filipina/Mexican-American designer, animator, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. Her short independent films explore complex themes of the human experience, particularly hope, loss, and grief, and have been screened at film festivals such as the Los Angeles International Film Festival and the Roving Eye Film Festival. She has worked as a designer and Art Director on several title sequences for film and television, including Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie, Phantom Thread and The Hate U Give. Currently she is a motion graphics artist at Trailer Park Group, where she designs and animates trailers for film, television and social content.
