This week a little look at neuro plasticity and our amazing adaptable brains. We used to think that our brains were formed in childhood and then didn't change. Now we know we make new brain cells throughout our lives and this allows us to constantly change and adapt to our environment and what we are doing in it. It is rather good news to know that we can change and evolve all throughout our lives. The old belief may come from the fact that we operate for the majority of the time on autopilot. For example if we wantt a cup of tea we don't really think about making it, we just do it. In huge areas of life we act like this we function from a learnt pattern and so free up more ability to concentrate on other things. Sometimes these learnt patterns may be negative. We may operate form a belief that we are worthless because we were told that, we may be scared because life as a kid didn't feel safe, we may have copied other's anxious patterns. Neuro plasticity means if we choose we can update and change these automatic subconscious patterns of behaviour. It's exciting stuff! A 28-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a Tesla car in autopilot mode overran him, The News reported quoting USA Today. Jeffrey Nissen from Washington was pronounced dead on the scene after a Tesla car Model-S hit his bike on state route 522 in Maltby, 25 miles from Seattle, on Friday. As per reports, the Tesla driver had put the car on an autopilot driving system and was using his phone. The car stopped on top of the motorcyclist and couldn’t be moved in time to save him. As per the Seattle Times, the driver has been arrested for “inattention to driving while in autopilot mode, and the distraction of the cell phone while moving forward. The driver trusted the machine to drive for him.” Washington State Patrol Captain Deion Glover said: “It’s still in the early stages of investigation as a lot of unknowns are still out there.” Investigations are underway to find out if the car was in autopilot mode or if the death occurred solely due to the driver’s fault. Tapia said the revolutionary car company should rethink how it markets the technology, as people using autopilot may be led to believe they themselves don't need to pay attention to driving. “It's just irresponsible for the company to go out there with this feature, knowing full well that people are going to use it, and then tell people don't use it because it's not really safe," Tapia said. He added, "We do have laws that do cover what you're supposed to be doing when you're in control of a car, which is that you're supposed to maintain your focus on the road and be aware of all conditions that are around you."
