Probably one of the most amazing beaches I have ever seen: Balos beach in the utmost Northwest of Crete. We went there by car - the last 8km you have to drive on a gravel road which is really ok to drive with slow speed. You can also go there by boat but since it was too early in the season, no boat was leaving for that beach on that day. No matter how you finally get there, this beach is worth every effort - you will be overwhelmed by the Turquoise colour of the sea. Trip to Balos Lagoon Beach!🏝️ We traveled 65km from our hotel to the famous Balos Lagoon beach, including a 10km off-road stretch starting at Kissamos. The off-road path runs along a steep cliff edge and requires a 30-minute hike down to reach the turquoise beach with white sand. Despite the long hike, the stunning turquoise waters and fine white/pinkish sand made the journey worthwhile. It is strictly forbidden (when you pick up your car it mostly says that on the paper you’ll sign), in case you order a Jeep that can handle the bumpy roads… ⛴️ INSTEAD, take the bus and then the daily ferry that leaves in the morning from Kissamo and takes you to Gramvousa Island (where a pirate fort is!) and then over to Balos Lagoon. …If you go by ferry it can be crowded since many different kinds of ferries arrive during the day with tourists. 🩵 But nonetheless, Balos (and Grambousa) is magical with crystal blue water and white sand, and I thought every penny that was payed for this trip was worth it.💰 🚤 You also have the option of going with small private boats to Balos. However (!!), the sea around Balos is open and is most often very windy so when going with a private boat in those area is usually not as magical and peaceful as you think.
