Sunrise at the John Chad House. John Chad operated a ferry across the Brandywine River from 1731 until his death in 1760. The ferry service continued until 1828 when a bridge was built. Major General Marquis de Lafayette Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette Marquis de LaFayette, a French-aristocrat at the age of 19, went against the King's word and joined the Continental Army to fight the British in 1776. He had no other family as his father died in the Seven Years War; and a few years later, in the same week, his Mother and Grandmother had both died. Shot in the calf at the Battle of Brandywine, The Marquis showed an abundance of courage commanding a retreat while under immense fire from the British and Hessians. General Washington took a great fondness and liking to The Marquis that when he was given word of his injury, Washington told his own surgeon, "Treat him as if he were my son". While he was almost universally glorified at his inauguration, by the end of his first term, he faced hostile attacks by both Democrats and Republicans, likely a reason for his decision to retire in 1796. Nothing was off limits, his "monarchial" style, and "aristocratic" behavior, as well as his integrity, principles, and even military reputation, were all under fire. 💣 📰 Newspaper publishing exploded from under 50 in 1776 to over 250 by 1800, many led by aggressive editors eager to share their support of, or opposition to, the government. The harsh language on both sides of the debate reflected profound mutual distrust. The Frame family from Birmingham, Chester County gave us a glimpse into historical events this week. Some nature beings have responsibility for the health of the land. Restitution of balance can take hundreds of years, as is seen in trees around the area of the fiercely fought 1777 Battle of the Brandywine - the largest single day battle of the Revolutionary war, in which 30,000 British and Colonial soldiers battled on September 11 (not a good day for Americans!). The nature beings have sought to contain the energy of advancing lance soldiers in this tree. You see the ferocious soldier with lance (tree branch) while above is a goddess of war. The other image is of the Gilpin homestead - in an open field that saw intense battle. Next to the homestead is a huge Sycamore tree - sycamores bear prayers to spirit, and this one has seen more than the usual prayers offered up. It is an historically recognized tree.
