It took a team of “Battlefield Detectives” – using high-tech instruments and drones – to solve the mystery of the exact location of a Revolutionary War-era fort in Blair County, Pennsylvania. 🕵️♂️ Fort Roberdeau was constructed during the American Revolution to protect the lead mines that were crucial to the production of munitions. A replica of the fort in 1976 was constructed on the site in celebration of the American Bicentennial. However, historians had little information on the exact location of the fort or the lead mines nestled among the farmlands of central Pennsylvania. North American Land Trust (NALT) holds conservation easements on two properties surrounding Fort Roberdeau, preserving approximately 153 acres of open space for future generations. Researchers determined that some of the fort’s outbuildings and mining operations are located on the NALT conservation easements. The Coal Creek property also has a short stretch of Bear Creek running through it. In old aerial photos you can follow a road out of Blossburg's downtown onto the property and to the coal mines. The road crossed Bear Creek at a couple of spots. While the bridges are gone, some remains of the abutments are still there. While figuring out how to get across Bear Creek, we noticed this piece of coal resting on the remains of a bridge abutment. Happy Halloween! I took this spooky picture last week while hiking the Mocanaqua Loop trail. There a number of old concrete structures from when the area was under control of the West End Coal Company in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This shot was taken from the inside of one which had a face appropriate for the season. Fall color was just about peak. Next Monday Feb 6th will be Hulmeville Borough’s next council meeting. This meeting will be a very important one to attend. The conceptual plans that Superior Holdings have submitted require a Conditional Use Approval from the borough council who will make a vote on whether to grant that or not. It would be a poor decision for Borough Council to vote yes on this without knowing what all the ramifications will be and without knowing what the locals want. THIS IS NOT JUST A BOROUGH ISSUE, it affects all the other surrounding towns and any commuters who frequent Hulmeville. Your opinions matter too, and if anyone is concerned about flooding, traffic, taxes, an overcrowded school district, loss of wildlife or all the above then please come out and make your voices heard. Superior Holdings has only showed us conceptual plans for building. On January 25th there will be a zoning board meeting asking for variances on 3 zoning ordinances. There would be more transparency and understanding for and from the townspeople if we actually knew what he was planning on building rather than allowing variances to be passed for something that doesn't exist. I’m already sad that we’re past peak foliage and Fall is feeling more and more of distant memory. It’s a special time of year that inspires me to shoot landscapes and scenes vs wildlife. Beautiful day at #OkehockingPreserve, #willistown This 185 acre preserve was protected through funding from the Willistown Township Open Space Fund, Chester County Municipal and Land Trust Grants, and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Preservation Partnership Program. Willistown Township owns 181 acres and Willistown Conservation Trust owns the Garrett bank barn and 4 acres in the middle of the property.
