Erected in 1876 by Francis Julius LeMoyne, the LeMoyne Crematory stands as the pioneering crematory in the United States. Perched atop Gallow's Hill in North Franklin Township near Washington, Pennsylvania, this brick one-story building measured 20 by 30 feet. The crematory ceased operations in 1901 after more than 40 cremations, including LeMoyne's own in 1879. The final cremation performed was on November 28, 1900. Klein und bescheiden steht die rund 900 Jahre alte Wanderuper Feldsteinkirche. Die romanische Kirche besteht aus unbehauenen Feldsteinen und stammt damit vermutlich aus der Zeit, in der noch keine Quader- und Ziegelbauten errichtet wurden - also wahrscheinlich vor 1200. Wanderup war früher eine arme dänische Gemeinde, so dass die Wanderuper den dänischen König um die Ausschreibung einer Kollekte zum Bau eines neuen Glockenturmes baten. Die Antwort der dänische Regierung: Abgelehnt! Begründung war, dass „in einer so kleinen Bauerngemeinde die Glocken ja eben nicht notwendig scheinen“. Die Wanderuper verstanden es aber, in gefühlvollen Briefen und Berichten, die sie trotz Absagen immer wieder schickten, das Herz der Regierung in Kopenhagen zu erweichen. Schließlich wurde die Kollekte für die Kirchenreparatur und das Umgießen der Glocke genehmigt - nicht aber für das Holz zum Aufbau des Glockenturmes. Home of Lon C. Hill Sr., Valley Pioneer and Founder of Harlingen. The lumber of the house was brought from Hill's hardware store in Brownsville by horse and wagon driven by his sons. Our Watch List brings statewide attention to historic properties in Wyoming that are currently threatened with demolition or neglect. The Wyoming State Hospital’s historic campus, which was designed by Wyoming architect William Dubois in 1888, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Despite this, the proposed Department of Health budget for 2024 included $3.5 million for the demolition of the existing buildings on the campus. Luckily, during the 2024 legislative session, an amendment to the state budget was passed to save some of the buildings. With only five of the 23 remaining buildings saved from demolition, and only for a year, there is still work to be done to preserve the campus and history it represents. Advocates in Evanston and statewide would like to see the entire campus preserved and repurposed for housing and other uses. Without advocacy and awareness for the preservation of these historic buildings, the Wyoming State Hospital, its unique historic architecture, and its historical context could be lost forever. 👀 We're always surprised what we find in these old buildings. Take, for example, the Bass Furniture Building at 142 Mitchell Street. During a recent exploration, we stumbled upon.. — some fallen chandeliers, — a random drum kit, and — a tiny toy scarecrow. Standing for more than a century, this distinctive brick building in downtown Atlanta was once home to Bass Furniture. And thanks to the hustle of local preservationists in the 1970s, it proudly sits on the National Register of Historic Places. Although our evaluation is ongoing, we're optimistic about the future of this space (potentially a residential community with around 40 units). Boosting the residential population in South Downtown is one of our top priorities. More residents means more support for local businesses, improved safety with increased foot traffic, and a more vibrant social scene. We can't wait to see more people calling @southdowntownatl home. 😀

Hafa Adai! Today is the first day of May, which means it's officially #preservationmonth and GPT has a lot to share with our community about current and past historic preservation work on Guam. This is the first in a month long series of posts that highlight historic places on island. Our first featured historic place is the Jose Pangelinan Lujan House and Guam Institute in the Historic District of Hagatña, Guam. Originally designed by Jose P. Lujan (Born 1891, Familian Atdot, son of Salvador Diaz Lujan and Luisa Blas Pangelinan) who harnessed his carpentry skills with the Carpentry Apprentice Program at the Navy Yard in Hagåtña in 1907. The home was constructed in 1911 when he was just 20 years old and was the first of many constructions which would come to belong to the legacy of "Tun Pepe". After the home was originally used as a Naval officers lounge, the Lujan family resided here in the early 1920s. From 1928 to 1941, the building was home to the Guam Institute, one of the first private and most successful schools of the pre-war period which offered 12 grades of classes. The Guam Institute was founded by a prominent figure in Guam's history, Filipino Attorney and Educator Nieves M. Flores. Many of Guam’s post-war leaders were students of the Guam Institute including Archbishop Felixberto C. Flores, the first Chamorro archbishop; District Court Judge Cristobal Duenas; and Island Court Judge Joaquin Perez. The building did survived the war on Guam, but the institute was never re-established once it closed its doors in 1941 due to the Japanese invasion. The building materials themselves tell a story of Guam's past, with architectural elements influenced by Spanish (i.e. white lime-based #mamposteria wall plaster finish) and American (corrugated tin-metal roof) introductions, while also including materials (ifit/ifil wood for the buildings support beams, second story flooring, balcony, windows, and ceiling) and methods (high-lofted ceiling with window placements designed for airflow) that are indigenous to Guam. Deep below the Federal Reserve building in New York City lies the world’s largest gold vault, housing around five percent of all gold ever mined globally. This impressive vault, located 80 feet below street level, contains 507,000 bars of solid gold, weighing a total of 6,331 metric tons. Interestingly, the majority of this gold belongs to the central banks of 36 foreign countries, not the United States. Despite its public location, the vault is incredibly secure, resting on Manhattan’s bedrock and protected by layers of steel and concrete. Access is limited to one entry, a 90-ton steel cylinder, and the vault is equipped with advanced security measures, including sensors and cameras. Despite its security, parts of the vault are included in guided tours, though only replicas of gold bars are on display. Madcap Coffee sits in my favorite corridor of downtown Grand Rapids, where the historic buildings are as classic as a bold cup of black coffee. Throughout the last few years, I've explored some really cool coffee shops. A couple of my favorites in GR are @lanterncoffeebar and @wildroastcoffeeco . I also loved @mountaindwellercoffee in Colorado, @cphcoffeelab (Copenhagen Coffee) in Lisbon, and several cafés in Paris.
