I made this piece at @bicycledaysf ! I had so much fun painting! I wanted to highlight some Bay Area bicycle culture and was inspired by scraper bike kids pulling stunts like this hand drag. This trick encompasses allot of the culture, combining speed, control, and style with the feeling of freedom and daring. That’s how I felt painting it, like I put in the practice and now I got to show what I had been working on. I had searched for references and sketched about it for days before the event. I had a pose in mind but couldn’t find a direct reference, so I had to work it out. I learned the key points of the trick to inform the pose, paying attention to the physics of the body and bike position. The lean back is balanced with forward momentum. Doing a wheelie, then hitting the break at just the right time to bring the rider back upright. Some riders control the wheelie by keeping a petal locked behind one leg, or holding the frame with their legs. The hand drag is the icing on the cake, showing control to take the wheelie to its limits. Painted in one night. Thanks to all who shared nice words. We searched for 4 leaf clovers in SF’s Golden Gate Park’s arboretum near Haight-Ashbury, a historical neighborhood for these kinds of experiences 🌺🌸🍀 Later that night, it was as if I had never truly listened to music. Busy day sending more tracks off to mastering, while finishing production on the last tune for the new Living Light album, while doing a photography session for my cover artist, while working on a promo video with my videographer, while buying flights and sorting travel details for my upcoming festivals, while chatting with my managers who keep my head on straight - especially during the last leg of album production as summer shows start to ramp up. The longer I'm a musician, the more I become aware of the whole economy that is built around an artist - from the venue and promotion of the event and ticket sales, to my hired managers and booking agents and record labels and photographers and videographers and album cover artists and mastering engineers and vinyl print shops (shshs 🤫 more TBA) to merchandise designers and manufactures, to VJs, to whole venue sound systems and home studio sound systems, to musical instrument companies and music production software companies, to the outfits I wear on stage, right down to the money I spend on the flights and hotels and car rentals and Ubers. The longer I work as an artist, the more I become aware of this living breathing symbiotic ecosystem that I support and that supports me in return, which makes me want to support it even more. Sometimes the days are long with many plates spinning and it can be hard to keep track of it all at once. Sometimes we artists have no idea how we are going to get from point A to point B, but then, when we don't give up, one day we realize we are there. And then it's on to point C! 😂 Being a musician is taking life by the horns and holding on tight, getting knocked off, and getting back on over and over. It's not easy, but it is an epic adventure, and nothing in the world fulfills me like this work.
