I really missed biking. Ever since Sept. 2023 I have been nursing a herniated disk in my lower back. I finally got out bike packing on the Tres Rios Route from @kurt.refsnider As usual my #kinetic from #binarybicycles was lovely and dealt with everything from deep sand to rocky single track and down to pavement with smooth transitions and comfort. My herniated disk from another bike and that was confirmed after I rode over 140 on my binary without a single pain. Not exactly the century I had planned, but a century nonetheless. I was doing a great job of consuming calories all morning, but by mile 35, it felt like I wasn’t digesting the Lara bars at all. The last climb to Crown King was pretty brutal. I had to get off several times to battle the nausea. Crown King was too busy to eat there, so I headed to Cleator and ate my lunch. I was feeling better until the end of the Antelope Creek climb. When I got to Mayer, I decided to take the road back to town. One of the coolest project I’ve had a chance to take on. A @binarybicycles Havok ready for take-off 🛫. The Havok name and do-all design were inspired by the WWII era Douglas A-20 Havoc, a medium bomber that would end up taking on many different combat roles over its time in service. In an attempt to capture the look and vibe of the airborne namesake, this Havok got a unique and “riveting” anodized @usairforce design complete with rusted finish. Could it have been painted? Maybe so… but we don’t do that here! 😎 This one took some time to think through and implement, but it’s finally ready for flight. Thanks to George and Jalene at @binarybicycles for all the patience! It was supposed to be a fantastic day. David Wicks was staying with us as we helped facilitate him getting to the start of his ITT of the Arizona Trail 800 race. GH had been wanting to ride the miles from Border Monument 103 to Parker Canyon Lake, as this would let him check off the entire mountain bike section of the Arizona Trail (AZT) from the Mexico border to Picketpost trailhead near Superior. What better way to snag those miles than to pedal off with Wicks and then part ways at Parker Canyon Lake?! We arrived at BM103 a little after sunrise. It was a beautiful morning. Photos were taken of the momentous occasion, and soon thereafter GH and Wicks pedaled off. I hopped in the truck and made my way toward Parker Canyon Lake. (Image 1) Well, the fantastic day lasted for maybe 10 minutes. The Effigear gearbox installed on GH's Kinetik blew up on the first climb less than a quarter mile into the twenty-mile ride. Considering the gearbox had approximately 17 whole miles on it, it blowing up was kind of a surprise! And, it immediately put a damper on the day. Plot twist. Wicks pressed on with his ride. And, so did GH. In whatever gear ratio the Effigear was in when it exploded. 😂 Determined to get those section miles, GH pushed where he needed to, and cranked when he could. A few hours later, GH popped out of the Mesquite thicket and I could hear the horrendous rhythm of an orchestra of destruction as he finished pedaling to the Parker Canyon Lake trailhead sign. (Images 2 and 3) Have you ever seen a blown-up Effigear gearbox? No? Well, we didn't want to see it either. Especially on *that* ride. You're looking at a section of the steel casing completely blown off and held by the Effigear label. Not pretty, we know.
