Featured North Rim Passage: Passage 9 - Rainbow Rim and the Rainbow Rim Overnighter Passage 9: Rainbow Rim and the Rainbow Rim Overnighter take riders out to famous Rainbow Rim, which is the sole opportunity for mountain bikers to ride singletrack along the rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The overnighter combines Passage 9 Rainbow Rim and Passage 10 Dry Park from the Capes of the Canyon. The route has two potential start points: (a) Demotte and (b) FR 22. If starting from Demotte, riders climb up FR 22 to the Kaibab High Point before a big descent down through Dry Park to Cape 9: Parissawampitts Point and the start of the singletrack. Although a little chunky at first, the tread smooths out as it weaves and flows along the Canyon edge and through thickets of aspen and pine. Riders hit up Capes 9 -13 - all of which provide rim-side camping opportunities and stellar views. Water is available mid-route at Parissawampitts and Quaking Aspen Springs. Finish by riding up Quaking Aspen Canyon and then climbing up FR 222 back to Demotte to close the loop. This route is best ridden in Summer - Fall (Late-May - Mid-October). No permits are necessary. There is fantastic dispersed camping all along the route including along the rim of the Grand Canyon. The Overnighter is ~60 miles while Passage 9 alone is ~37 miles making a day trip or night out along the rim possible. More information including the RWGPS maps can be found at the link in my bio. (🇬🇧 in comment ) 🇫🇷 C'est à Athènes 🇬🇷 que nous fêtons nos 3000 km à vélo après un périple de 750 km pour parcourir ce magnifique pays ! Amateurs d'authenticité et de ruralité, nous avions pris l'option de passer par les montagnes du nord plutôt que de descendre par le sud côtier et le Péloponnèse. Un choix que nous n'avons absolument pas regretté. Des montagnes du Zagori encore préservées, fréquentées par notre cher ami l'ours brun 🐻, au temple d'Apollon de Delphes en passant par les monastères des Météores...au top 👌🏼 ! Un itinéraire très diversifié donc, avec de nombreux villages et rencontres authentiques, et surtout des petites routes sans trafic! Pour nous à vélo, ce fut aussi incroyablement physique ! 💪🏼 Nous qui n'avions jamais fait plus de 400 m de dénivelé positif dans la même journée avec nos vélos couchés (poids total autour de 60 kg avec le matériel), nous avons fait des journées à 1000/1200 m de D+ 🥵! Cela ne nous a pas tant dérangés que ça mais plutôt confortés dans le fait qu'on préfère "souffrir" dans les montées mais observer des paysages magnifiques 🏞️ (un des gros avantages des vélos couchés : la vue !) plutôt que d'enchaîner les kilomètres de plat ennuyant... Et quelles descentes ! Jusqu'à 30 kilomètres consécutifs pour une des dernières journées avant Delphes ! 🤗 On a hâte de la suite mais pour ces prochaines semaines, place à la découverte de la Crète avec quelques semaines de volontariat 🫡 dans le sud, réputé sauvage et préservé... 🌳🌼 Nouveau record de vitesse : 71, 73 km/h ! 🤪 Nouveau pays vélo couché/train compatible: 🇬🇷 Évidemment tout cela ne serait pas possible sans nos bolides adorés, les vélos couchés @azubrecumbents achetés auprès du méga cool magasin @velofasto #velofasto , qui nous a gracieusement fourni les supers sacoches pour transporter tout ce matériel ! Featured South Rim Passage: Passage 2 - Red Butte and the Red Butte Overnighter Passage 2: Red Butte takes bikepackers out on a loop ride to Red Butte in the heart of the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni National Monument. Cyclists start outside Tusayan riding through montane woodlands of ponderosa pines before descending to savannah grasslands near Anita Station. Riders then approach the base of Red Butte and pass by a trailhead to its summit before ascending back into conifer forests up along Skinner Ridge. From here, it’s a fun descent back towards Tusayan. The route sticks to mostly fantastic gravel roads and features several reliable wildlife tanks for water. Red Butte is a sacred site for the Havasupai so make sure to ride with respect. In addition, this area helped spur the creation of the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni NM in August 2023 to prevent further uranium mining on lands near the Grand Canyon. This route is best ridden in Spring (Late April - Early June) and Fall (September - October), although it is possible to ride it during summer (just be ready for heat and monsoons). An Arizona State Lands permit is required, so make sure to purchase and carry one with you. Passage 2 can be ridden as a day ride or turned into an Overnighter. Looks like I will be bikepacking overseas for the first time ever finally, and going home to visit! It's easy to get trapped in NZ because it's so amazing. But thanks to @iammadelinehoffmann 's post and @omafiets notes, this carrot 🥕 dangling in front of my eyes is truly too good. The route passes through my old road cycling and Audax stomping grounds and will take me into new territory off road. The Convict Trail in the vicinity of Wisemans Ferry is also to note, worth a side trip! I can literally get a train from the airport all the way to the start point in the mountains, ride across that vast expanse of bush to the sea, keep riding south on roads I know too well, and end up on my parents doorstep in Sydney. Bikepacking can really take you to places previously inaccessible. Full sus bag and bike still kickin' around. Little gravel ride to make sure bike still works and to shake off that corpse feeling 💀 I had to conclude this setup is the most sensible one I've got for the T42 ride since I ran out of time to reconfigure the handlebars and cockpit on Team Marin hardtail. The event requires us to carry a heap of emergency gear as it's in alpine terrain, so the framebag would be great. I rode the T42 on a hardtail the first time which was noticeably faster than riding it on this full sus the second time and I was determined to ride 3 different bikes in the 3 times I've entered. Just expecting the worst trail conditions for the 1.6km of bike carry so flats will be easier to clip back into after stomping in sticky mud. Riders take a chunky doubletrack through the woods to enter Grand Canyon National Park where they pass by the abandoned ruins of the Pasture Wash Ranger Station before making their way out to Cape 21 South Bass and Cape 22 Havasupai Point. Make sure to get the required permits from the Backcountry Information Center to sleep on the rim and carry plenty of water because it’s dry camping out there. The “Short Version” bypasses the ride through Apex along the Grand Canyon Railroad and cuts off a start and end in Tusayan. This route is best ridden in Spring (Late April - Early June) and Fall (September - October), although it is possible to ride it during summer (just be ready for heat and monsoons). A Backcountry Permit from GCNP is required to camp at any of the campsites along the rim. The permit can only be acquired as a walk-up at the Backcountry Information Center. As these campsites are not accessible by vehicle, there is a high chance of achieving a walk-up permit. An Arizona State Lands permit is required, so make sure to purchase and carry one with you. Had so much fun and met new friends on @timelessdiwa_project 's Down to Earth Camp for Earth day 2024. On the way home I decided to join Valerie, Janelle, and Lars (please correct me if I misspelled your names). There were just 4 of us but our bikes were diverse: one was a road bike, one gravel bike, a mountain bike, and mine a pedal assist fat bike. I used pedal assist 1 on the @fiidoebike T1 Pro starting from @biensonfarm as the terrain was hilly, until we reached SM Tangko. We bid goodbye to Valerie as we diverged paths. Afterwards I started using pedal assist 2. Janelle wanted to try the T1 Pro, so we swapped bikes when we arrived at Commonwealth avenue. She enjoyed the T1 Pro but really felt it was heavy since it was loaded with my tent and belongings (at least compared to her bike especially since she packed light) 😅. We swapped back and continued pedalling together until around Technohub, where I bid farewell to both Lars and Janelle. I bike alone most of the time, but it's a refreshing change of pace to get to bike with others every once in a while. The route was 41 kilometers, and the T1 Pro still had 3 bars on the battery left when I arrived home. The T1 Pro can definitely go the distance even with a full camping load. Joined Timeless Diwa Project’s Down to Earth Camp for Earth Day 2024 Borrowed the Fiido T1 Pro from @popcycleph for this event, as it’s very capable for long distances. Because of the @mmdagovph ‘s e-bike ban, I was slightly worried of being apprehended going to Bulacan (which is ironic since MMDA seems to want me to use an air polluting and heat producing motorcycle or car instead to go to an earth day event). And this is the problem with the ban, it includes all major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, that you really have no option. Not all desinations have secondary routes. Thankfully president @bongbongmarcos has called for the ban’s suspension, and I do hope he looks into the unjust and heartless ban as well and have it abolished completely. The route was 44 kilometers based on Google Maps timeline, and I still had 2 bars on the battery left when I arrived at the venue in Norzagaray Bulacan. Back to the bike camping event. This is a 2 day event which aims to impart knowledge and mindfulness to attendees so they can be more aware and be earth’s caretakers, rather than wanton enjoyers with no regard for mother nature. Featured North Rim Passage: Passage 18 - Bedrock and the Bedrock Overnighter Passage 18: Bedrock is a 45 mile loop and out back to two capes along Marble Canyon at Cape 29 Bedrock Point and Cape 30 Twentyseven Mile Rapids Overlook. Bikepackers head across the grassy expanses of House Rock Valley, catch some good water at Buffalo Tank, and then can camp rim-side at several locations. There are short spurts of fine-grained sand in places, so larger tires might be appreciated. Beyond that, the roads are in great condition and quickly carry riders below the flanks of the North Rim. I finished my loop down the coast and cruised back towards Rustee's house. Along the way I ate a popsicle and made friends with an inanimate metal man. The metal man lives along a bike path, so he must have a lot of cyclist friends. I turned into Rustee's driveway and noticed that the Firebird (my car) was missing. In its place was a giant hole. I thought that was odd, so I continued to the backyard where I found the Firebird parked on the lawn. Apparently in the time that I was gone a developer had dug a massive hole for a new building a few feet from Rustee's house. Also, Rustee had shaved his hair into a stylish mohawk. A lot can happen in a week and a half! Sorry I didn't capture those photos--it's my biggest regret. The other change I noticed is that instead of snow falling, flowers are now blooming. In the span of a week and a half, the seasons have truly shifted. I love cooking on my tiny twig stove. First I boil water to pour into my thermos along with coffee grounds. I store the thermos in my sleeping bag so I'll have hot coffee in the morning. Then I boil more water to make dinner--in this case pasta with kale and dried beef. Then after dinner sometimes I boil more water for tea, either from plants that I gathered or tea bags I bought. And then if it's cold out and I'm not tired yet, I add more twigs to the fire and just enjoy the light and warmth. In the beginning of this trip it rained a lot, so I had to burn dry/damp bark that I gathered from the base of conifers. It was kind of smoky but it worked well enough. Recently the weather has been sunny. I've really enjoyed the ease of creating light and heat from a few dry twigs each evening. Fire is a thing of focus. It allows the mind to wander, but still stay riveted. Ah yes, just another day at the beach...dressed in my winter layers, using my thermos lid to pour lake water over my sleeping pad, trying to find the leak.🤣 I found it and patched it so HA! Afterward I lay on the sand, looking up at the sky, and tried to think of how many times I've patched sleeping pad punctures. It has to be over 50. At least. I'm super careful with my inflatable pads but punctures still happen. To find the puncture, I blow up the pad and dunk it in water or pour water overtop. I've done this in bathtubs, in sinks, in buckets, from hoses outside random buildings, streams, lakes, water fountains. I look for air bubbling from the puncture, mark the spot with a pen, let the pad dry, and dab on sealant. Sometimes the bubbles are obvious but other times they're nearly invisible. It's a thing.
