🏡 On this Feeder Friday, we examine the easiest- to-observe field marks that distinguish the impressive Hairy Woodpecker (left) from the charming Downy Woodpecker (right). ✔️Most noticeable is the larger overall size of the Hairy Woodpecker, and its relatively larger, stronger bill. Also, fairly easy to distinguish is a more conspicuous tuft of stiff white feathers at the base of the Downy Woodpecker's shorter bill. 📍More challenging to observe (but once you do, you can't unsee them ☺️) are three dark bars on the Downy Woodpecker's white outer tail feathers, as compared to all-white outer tail feathers on the Hairy. In the comparison photo here, the dark spots on the Downy's tail are just barely peeking out. 🔻If you also noted that the Hairy Woodpecker in the left photo differs due to a red patch on the back of its head, you would be correct because it is a male. Both Hairy and Downy Woodpecker males sport red patches. 💡Another simple way to tell a Downy Woodpecker is the law of averages; they are our most common woodpecker and the most likely to visit backyard feeders! ❤️In our experience, both woodpecker species prefer suet. Datel rezavý (Micropternus brachyurus) V tomto případě by se asi mohlo jedna o samičku tohoto středně velkého šplhavce. Samečci totiž maji pod okem červenou skvrnu a to u tohodle ptáka není vidět. Tenhle nenápadný pták se mi opravdu líbil, na první pohled se zdá fádní, ale zdání klame. Ta struktura v peří je prostě neuvěřitelná 😎 Rufous Woodpecker In this case, it could probably be a female of this medium-sized climber. Males have a red spot under their eye, which is not visible in this bird. I really liked this inconspicuous bird, at first glance it seems dull, but appearances are deceiving. I finally got some closer shots of this red-headed woodpecker. He has a specific stump that he likes to frequent, and recently I was able to find him there. Usually, his behavior lends itself to shots that involve more distance and trees for a backdrop, but this was a nice change of pace. Even got a red-bellied woodpecker in the foreground of one of these shots. They were both fighting over some food at the time. Shot on a Nikon d750 paired with a 200 to 500 mm lens Fun fact: Red-headed woodpeckers are one of the few woodpecker species known for their striking appearance and behavior of catching insects mid-air. The Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a charismatic bird commonly found in the eastern United States. Despite its name, the red blush on its belly is often difficult to see. Instead, the most prominent feature is its zebra-like pattern on the back, with a red cap on the head. Male Red-bellied Woodpeckers play an active role in feeding their young. A group of birders were all huddled together and pointing at a certain tree in the forest. That obviously peaked my curiosity, so I went over to go see what they were looking at. Turns out it was this pileated woodpecker. The largest woodpecker in North America. He was absolutely gorgeous, and to see a bird of his size was awesome. They measure 18 in tall with a wingspan of 30 in. Fun fact: Pileated woodpeckers are known for their drumming, which can be so loud that it can be heard up to half a mile away! 🇨🇿Datlík tříprstý (Picoides tridactylus) Tak konečně! Tohle je pro mě takový ptáčkařský špek, který jsem z Beskyd opravdu chtěl. Datlík je zvláště chráněný jako silně ohrožený druh, populace v naší republice je okolo 500 párů. Samičku na téhle lokalitě pozorovala @karintylova_wildlife už před půl rokem a jelikož se jedná o stály druh byly šance na pozorování docela dobré. Ale i přes četné pokusy se nedařilo, až teď. A sameček! Pozorovali jsme ho bezmála hodinu, nechal se fotit z několika málo metrů. Měl spoustu práce s hledáním potravy a nás si nevšímal. Jen mě trochu mrzí, že je to kroužkovaný jedinec, ale to už bych chtěl asi moc 😎 🇬🇧Eurasian three-toed woodpecker Finally! For me, this is the special species that I really wanted from the Beskydy. This woodpecker is particularly protected as a highly endangered species, the population in our country is around 500 pairs. The female was observed by Karin six months ago in this locality, and since it is a permanent species, the chances of observation were quite good. But despite numerous attempts, it didn't work until now. And a male! We watched him for almost an hour, he let himself be photographed from a few meters away, he was busy looking for food and didn't notice us.
