A Pacific Golden Plover at KCC with its black male breeding plumage forming on its face, chest and belly. Hawaiians call these birds Kolea. This is probably the last I'll see of them until next August. Every year in April, these stately birds fly non-stop from Hawaii to Alaska (that's 3,000 miles of nothing but ocean). There they breed in their territory of the Arctic Tundra over the summer months. Then in August, they all fly back non-stop from Alaska to Hawaii. Some will stay in Hawaii and some will go onward across the Pacific, Asia and Oceania, where they spend the winter months. Every year they repeat this migration. When breeding, males develop black breeding plumage all over their face, chest and belly, so this bird is definitely male and getting ready to migrate to Alaska any day. A White Cattle Egret (in breeding plumage), at Kahala. Named "Cattle Egret" because it eats up the insects hiding on the ground, which get stirred up when the cattle roam through the grass. In Hawaii I often see them by the side of road or on 2-way road islands. I'm guessing this is because the cars stir up insects in the same way as cattle do. When breeding, Cattle Egret develop orange-buff breeding plumage on their head, chest and back, so this bird is definitely in breeding. Related to heron, these serene birds are distance gazers. Just when I thought things were a little boring, this Gray Ringneck Parakeet/Parrot came screeching into my yard today eating from the starfruit tree. This bird has been in here before over the years. I know because all the Ringneck Parakeets in my area are green. This one is the only gray of its kind, which makes me think it once was an escaped pet. The black ring around the neck indicates it's a male. Don't stand underneath it while it's eating though or you might get hit with a starfruit lol. Who are these little handsomes? Jave sparrows were brought to Hawaiʻi from islands in Indonesia in the 1960s, including from the island of Java. Apparently they are rare in their native range, but they seem pretty content on Maui, for better or worse. They rapidly dominate any bird feeder, where they use their large beaks to crack open seeds and kind of just swarm out any other bird trying to get to the feeder. Small but intense birds! They seem to prefer suburbia to the upland forests in Hawaiʻi, but can spread invasive seeds. My birthday was a few days ago and this male/female Northern Cardinal pair were hanging around in front of my door the day of my birthday and the day before. The female cardinal even stepped right up to the walkway to my door, which she's never done before. Then I noticed twice the female cardinal was quietly just perching on the pomelo tree next to my door for a long time, also unusual. It is well known in folklore that sometimes n.cardinals can be messengers from our deceased loved ones in heaven. It's possible these 2 cardinals could be messengers from my grandparents, whom I was very close to. Maybe they came to see me on my birthday, especially in the 2nd clip. ❤️ (2 Clips attached). Family gathering at the bird bath in front of my door. First time I've captured the whole family of Brazilian Cardinals together at once, minus one offspring. The 2 red heads are the adult parent birds and the 1 brown head is the juvenile offspring. They're called Brazilian Cardinals or Red-crested Cardinals because their heads and crest resemble Northern Cardinals, but they're really in the family of Tanagers and they're not n.cardinals at all. This beautiful female cardinal has been showing up in front of my door and in the bird bath, everyday in a row, since March 21st (today is June 26th). Unlike the other birds, I have never seen her in here so much like this in my presence. Usually once every 4-5 months, but never so many days in a row. Her mate, the male cardinal, has only shown up once. Northern Cardinals are believed to be messengers from the other side. Maybe she brings messages from beyond, from a female loved one perhaps. *Update: Sadly since this was written, I've learned that my aunt passed 8 days after this female cardinal first appeared. I noticed that after I found out my aunt had passed, this female cardinal no longer comes by my door everyday. Maybe there's a connection, and with my grandmother who loved the family. These adorable Safron Finches are frequent visitors to our yard. Their bright yellow plumage with blushing faces makes them easy to spot when they are hopping around in the grass. Apparently, they are common on the Big Island (mostly the Kona Coast, which is the opposite side of the island from our house in Hilo), but are not common on the other islands of Hawaii.
