Speaking about our economics has proven to be a very difficult conversation. Despite the fact that many us believe “money is power”, we have no problem giving our “power” to other groups even when we have a black alternative in proximity to us. It reminds me of Dr Amos Wilson saying “black consumers have held the longest boycott against black businesses”. We cannot continue to complain about other groups using us to build their economic base while we continue to patronize them. At some point we must be honest about funding our oppression and doing nothing to stop it #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

⚫️Even Music⚫️Literally hundreds of sets of sheet music were issued with similar imagery. Today, the worse pictured, the more expensive, the more in demand. They are framed and become wall art. These are VERY in demand today, similar to their popularity a hundred years ago. WHY??? Seriously, you have to wonder. Why in the past 8-10 years are so many people clamoring to get similar to hang in their living rooms?? #stereotypes #blackinamerica #blackhistorymatters #blackhistoryiseveryday #blackhistoryisnow #fightracism #stophating #thisisnotokay #thisisnotnormal #thisisnotart #factsmatter #learnthetruth

Just my observation: only black people say that black spending power is myth and speak against. Every other group realizes the might of black spending power and you can tell by just walking through a black neighborhood. Nearly all of the shops are non black owned while the people you will pass are dressed in the latest non black owned fashions. In addition to having their own economic systems to empower themselves, they also receive 99% of our spending power that empowers them. So it’s not that black spending power is a myth, it’s that black spending empowers everyone except black people. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

I know the tobacco industry is ultimately behind this - their finances have long influenced politics - but I would love to know the civil rights groups tobacco lobbyists paid to resist this ban as a negative for black people.   A proposed ban on menthol cigarettes in the US “will take significantly more time,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement Friday, delaying a decision that had posed political risks for President Joe Biden as he runs for re-election. “This rule has garnered historic attention and the public comment period has yielded an immense amount of feedback, including from various elements of the civil rights and criminal justice movement,” Becerra said. “It’s clear that there are still more conversations to have, and that will take significantly more time.” Menthol cigarettes have become a pivotal issue for Biden, who is facing an election year with concerns over a dropoff in turnout from Black voters. Some civil rights leaders with connections to the tobacco industry have expressed concerns to the White House that a ban would criminalize menthol cigarettes and lead to an increase in deadly police interactions. Meanwhile, the NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus have endorsed the ban, along with dozens of public health experts, saying it would save hundreds of thousands of Black lives. A menthol ban could save up to 650,000 lives over the next 40 years, with a third of those lives saves among the Black community, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

I recall Dr Amos Wilson saying these folks feel no compulsion to live around us and do not feel like their rights are violated by not living around us. Meanwhile, we feel that if we cannot live around them, our rights are being violated. A group of wealthy white Baton Rouge residents have won a decades-long battle to split from the majority-black city to form their own suburb following a state Supreme Court ruling. After reversing a lower court’s decision on Friday, the Supreme Court ruled 4-3 in favor of the incorporation of St. George, which will form in southeast Baton Rouge. The NAACP, however, maintained its fears that the formation of St. George will negatively impact Baton Rouge’s majority black community. “The St. George plan poses significant risks to our education system, threatens the continuity of critical programs, and challenges community representation,” the local chapter of the NAACP said in a statement Monday. Before the new government can get started, however, Gov. Jeff Landry must appoint the city’s first mayor and city council members. Residents will vote for their new leaders in the next election cycle, according to the city’s website. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Another Asian owned barbershop in a black neighborhood in Philadelphia. Our spending power is real, do not let anyone attempt to convince you otherwise. The problem we have with our spending power is that we do not benefit from it. The fact that other groups have several businesses in our communities, businesses that cater to us, is proof of our spending power. As for this particular business, they are charging low prices and are using the red, black, and green colorway to pander to and entice black clients. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack Do you think a black owned barbershop with black barbers to cut Asians hair would exist in an Asian community?

Haiti’s newly installed transitional council chose a little known former sports minister as the Caribbean country’s prime minister Tuesday as part of its monumental task of trying to establish a stable new government amid stifling violence. Fritz Bélizaire was chosen in a surprise move to replace current interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert, gaining the support of four of the seven voting members on the nine-member panel but with other panel members saying they were unfamiliar with Bélizaire. The council members who oppose Bélizaire, who served as Haiti’s sports minister during the second presidency of René Préval from 2006 to 2011, are now weighing options including fighting the decision or resigning from the council. The council also planned to choose a Cabinet as it seeks to quell gang violence that is choking the capital, Port-au-Prince, and beyond. Earlier on Tuesday, the council chose former presidential candidate Edgard Leblanc Fils as the president of the panel. “This is a very good choice for prime minister,” Fils said of Bélizaire during a brief speech to nearly two dozen attendees. “The important thing for us is this will, this determination to go beyond divisions, to overcome conflicts and to reach a consensus.” #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Our mission work is what ultimately defines us, it becomes our legacy, it really is the only thing that matters. This quote has been on my mind since I discovered her while reading her autobiography (I recommend it, it’s a great read). It is one of a handful of quotes that has inspired me. Having theory without practice goes against the theory. For the theory to have any credibility, practice must be applied to it. For theorists to be worth their weight in gold, they must be active. No way around it. It’s not that one must showcase all that they do, but in order to galvanize others and to make an impact with the theory, action must take place. If there is a theory that you hold dear, apply it, and make it an action. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

"We become only so grateful to lose ourselves in the crowd, America's happy, faceless marketplace; and we're never so outraged as when a cabby drives past us or the woman in the elevator clutches her purse, not so much because we're bothered by the fact that such indignities are what less fortunate coloreds have to put up with every single day of their lives - although that's what we tell ourselves - but because we're wearing a Brooks Brothers suit and speak impeccable English and yet have somehow been mistaken for an ordinary nigger." She spoke about an infrastructure project and economic opportunities for minorities. She spoke about nothing about what his administration has done specifically for black people. Yet, her party is increasing public relations in GA specifically for the black vote. Kamala Harris once again visited Atlanta to tout investments made by the Biden administration in minority and underserved communities, highlighting $158m in infrastructure spending on a project to build a cap over Atlanta’s most traveled highway, the Downtown Connector. The vice-president’s appearance is the continuation of a full court press in Georgia to solidify support among Democrats – and specifically Black Democrats – for the administration. Harris kicked off a nationwide tour discussing economic opportunities for minority voters with this visit, she said. “To achieve true equality, we must have an economic agenda,” Harris said. “That agenda must mean speaking to people’s economic ambitions.” Federal spending can provide a base from which a business can grow and ultimately build those relationships, Harris said. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Dozens of American military personnel are expected to withdraw from Chad in coming days, three senior U.S. officials said Thursday, amid a broader, involuntary reconfiguration of Washington’s security policy in a volatile part of Africa. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss military movements, said the repositioning could be temporary as the United States intends to negotiate with Chad about their security relationship — including potentially returning the troops who departed — following the country’s presidential elections May 6. It marks the second time in a week the Biden administration has acknowledged it will comply with a host-nation directive to remove deployed forces from an African country deemed integral to U.S. counterterrorism operations in the region. On Friday, officials said the United States had agreed to pull out more than 1,000 military personnel from neighboring Niger. The discussion around the U.S. military presence in Chad — a vast landlocked nation in Central Africa — is particularly fraught given the rejection of the Western military partnerships in the central Sahelian nations of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

EVERY time I open this gallery it makes me smile. An uncontrollable smile just spreads across my face. Yes these photos are ADORABLE 😍 but it’s also the excitement of one day being able to have a moment like this with my own children. It’s the idea that the work and healing I’m doing today is directly going to impact the way I am going to be a Mother. Motherhood in the Black community is complicated. As any women’s/ womyns rights and issues are. As I am getting closer to the age in which I’ll want to have kids, I have been taking more stock into the stats. Did you know that the maternal mortality rate for Black women in the U.S. is 2.6 times higher than white women? Meaning just due to the color of my skin I have almost 3 times higher chance of death due to birthing complications than my white friends and family. And that’s just a stat. That doesn’t even begin to cover the pressure to have children as a human who can carry a child, or the external factors of family pressuring to have a child but not too soon because then you’re not ready and “what are you doing?!” But not too late because, ya know, the clock is ticking ⏰ [Mommy + Me photoshoot, Milestone Photoshoot, Black Photographer, Oregon Based, Travel Photographer, Portraits, Black Lives Matter] #BlackMothers #BlackPhotographer #BlackinAmerica

Haiti entered a new era of governance on Thursday with the official installation of a new nine-member presidential council in a two-part ceremony in the country’s gang-ridden capital. In a last-minute decision, members opted to secretly take the oath of office on the grounds of the National Palace — which has been under constant attack by armed gangs — after initially deciding the security risks were too great. The intimate ceremony included red and blue banners — the colors of the Haitian flag — a podium with the presidential seal and the palace police band playing the national anthem to welcome the new transition. The nine-member council is tasked with forging a path out of the current crisis, which has led to thousands of deaths and the destruction of public and private property, and leading Haiti to eventual elections. After Thursday’s swearing-in, the new council has to select a president from among their seven voting members and begin the process of choosing Henry’s replacement. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Reposted from @problkthought_3 In April 1865, the American Civil War was over and the former states of the Confederacy were in ruins. Astounding damage to infrastructure and the economy greeted Southern soldiers after the conflict. As Confederate President Jefferson Davis languished in prison, his former cabinet members dispersed to their homes in defeat. For die-hard Confederate loyalists like Col. William Hutchinson Norris and Maj. Lansford Hastings, this burden was too great. They couldn’t bear to live under what they regarded as a foreign occupation, and decided instead to leave for the slaveholding Empire of Brazil and establish colonies of Confederados, Brazil’s odd Southern holdouts. Popular destinations included Honduras, Mexico, and even Egypt, where former Confederate officers were invited to take up military commissions. But for steady believers in white supremacy, only Brazil could offer them the haven they sought. But even though Southern emigrants arrived in Brazil with the patronage of the president, they succeeded in buying very few slaves. The #Confederados spoke little Portuguese, and with insufficient funds and no personal connections in Brazil, they failed to purchase enough human lives to succeed in resurrecting the plantation agriculture system. It’s unknown how many exiled Southerners returned home in the years that followed. What is known is that many of the former settlements disbanded, and many either joined larger colonies or returned to the southern US eager to welcome them back. Those who remained became all the more close, intent on protecting their heritage even after Brazil abolished slavery in 1888. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Via @problkthought_3 President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said late on Tuesday that Portugal was responsible for crimes committed during transatlantic slavery and the colonial era, and suggested there was a need for reparations. Portugal trafficked nearly 6 million Africans, more than any other European nation, but has failed so far to confront its past and little is taught about its role in transatlantic slavery in schools. Instead, Portugal’s colonial era, during which countries including Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, Cape Verde and East Timor as well as parts of India were subjected to Portuguese rule, is often perceived as a source of pride. Speaking at an event with foreign correspondents late on Tuesday, Rebelo de Sousa said Portugal “takes full responsibility” for the wrongs of the past and that those crimes, including colonial massacres, had “costs”. Rebelo de Sousa said last year that Portugal should apologise for transatlantic slavery and colonialism but stopped short of a full apology. Deborah G. Plant is an independent scholar and author of “Of Greed and Glory”: My brother Bobby is not allowed to read the Black history that he is integrally a part of, a history that is presented in a book that he, himself, helped write. I’ve sent my brother many books over the years, with the help of various bookstore owners (since books sent from residential addresses are not allowed in the prison where he is incarcerated). He received and read every one — except the last one, the recently published “Of Greed and Glory,” the one that documents his voice. That one was banned. For nearly 25 years, my brother has been behind bars in the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, the largest maximum-security prison in the nation. “Of Greed and Glory: In Pursuit of Freedom For All,” recounts his story, in the context of the larger story of America’s “peculiar institution” of slavery and its contemporary iteration as America’s mass incarceration system. 🔗Visit the link in our bio to read more

Riding through a predominately black neighborhood in South Philly…I see a new barbershop….just guess who the owners are. Please keep in mind that there are already multiple black owned and staffed barbershops in the area. I know many of us like to say we do not have economic resources, however, this is false. Other groups consistently show us that we do have economic resources to empower, sustain, invest in, and grow ourselves just by many businesses they open in our communities. We allow them to take money out of our communities and go back to their communities to empower and build their own. I do not accept the excuse of other groups getting business loans to open businesses in our neighborhoods because if we refuse to patronize their businesses, the loans would mean nothing. The more we do not practice group economics and embrace black capitalist ventures, we will continue to lag behind and be vulnerable to the whims of other groups #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

There is no earth or Earth Day without Africa • The Great Green Wall is an African-led movement with an epic ambition to grow an 8,000km natural wonder of the world across the entire width of Africa. A decade in and roughly 15% underway, the initiative is already bringing life back to Africa’s degraded landscapes at an unprecedented scale, providing food security, jobs and a reason to stay for the millions who live along its path.    The Wall promises to be a compelling solution to the many urgent threats not only facing the African Continent, but the global community as a whole – notably climate change, drought, famine, conflict and migration. Once complete, the Great Green Wall will be the largest living structure on the planet, 3 times the size of the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Green Wall will also fight food insecurity and improve water security as well. #GreatGreenWall #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

The Negro in our HIstory by Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950) is a landmark publication, first published in 1922 and still in print today. Woodson was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African American history. He was the second African American to be awarded the Ph.D at Harvard after W.E.B. Du Bois in 1912. Woodson is also one of the founders of Black History Month. He declared in 1926: If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated. His History is that antidote ; it is written in clear prose presented in distinctive chapters that document the history and culture of African Americans from their African origins to the present. The second edition which is shown in the photos is relevant given that the precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926 when Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) announced the second week of February to be “Negro History Week”. This week was chosen because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and that of Frederick Douglass on February 14, both dates had been celebrated together since the late 19th century by Black communities. Early printings of Woodson’s History are rare and those on the market like the one here have condition issues. This particular copy had at least two owners who cherished and used it extensively. It has numerous marking and notes in it. Fortunately, they are in pencil and provide an over view of the interests of the owners. These marking are also in line with the goals of Black History Week and later Black History Month as Woodson stated them. This copy will be heading to the conservation lab and hopefully will be of continued use for the next century. Reposted from @problkthought_3 The United States informed the government of Niger on Friday that it agreed to its request to withdraw U.S. troops from the West African country, said three U.S. officials, a move the Biden administration had resisted and one that will transform Washington’s counterterrorism posture in the region. The agreement will spell the end of a U.S. troop presence that totaled more than 1,000 and throw into question the status of a $110 million U.S. air base that is only six years old. It is the culmination of a military coup last year that ousted the country’s democratically elected government and installed a junta that declared America’s military presence there “illegal.” The United States had paused its security cooperation with Niger, limiting U.S. activities — including unarmed drone flights. But U.S. service members have remained in the country, unable to fulfill their responsibilities and feeling left in the dark by leadership at the U.S. Embassy as negotiations continued, according to a recent whistleblower complaint. Niger’s eviction notice last month followed tense meetings with top officials from the State Department and the Pentagon, whom Nigerien leaders accused of attempting to dictate that the West African nation have no relationship with Iran, Russia or other U.S. adversaries. Black Maternal Health Week She published this letter concerning Black Maternal Health in April 2021. Can anyone tell me if there has been more than just words on this topic from the current administration? Look up the letter for yourself, but you will see the advice given was to speak up and ask questions—-as is black women were not already doing this. Black women in this country are facing a maternal mortality crisis. Black women die of pregnancy related causes at three times the rate of other women, regardless of income or education levels. And we know the primary reasons why: systemic racial inequities and implicit bias. Every woman has the right to ask questions of their healthcare provider through every step of a pregnancy. Keep a notebook and a list of questions. Doctors are there to care for you. It is their job to answer your questions. If they are doing their job correctly, they will always take the time to carefully go through each question with you.  If you are a Black woman reading this and you are pregnant or you have experienced loss, know that there are groups out there, podcasts to listen to, and books to read. You may never meet these Black women who are replacing silence with storytelling — —but they are passing on their strength to you and want you to know you are not alone. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Members of the United Nations forum on people of African descent called for extra funding to support its advancement towards reparations for descendants of enslaved Africans who were captured and trafficked across Transatlantic countries. A Howard University law professor who was hand-picked by the U.S. State Department to represent the U.S. at the forum urged the U.N. to pour more money into their reparations efforts, according to Reuters. “Back up your words with action,” Justin Hansford said. The remarks were during a session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD) in Geneva, Switzerland.  The U.N. General Assembly established the PFPAD on August 2nd, 2021 to act as “a consultative mechanism for people of African descent and other relevant stakeholders as a platform for improving the safety and quality of life and livelihoods of people of African descent,” the U.N.’s website states. The Transatlantic slave trade involved the kidnapping and trafficking of over 12 million African people across the Atlantic to North and South America – an effort known as the Middle Passage. Countries involved were the British, French, Spanish colonies that later became the United States.  #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

France should repay billions of dollars in reparations to Haiti to cover a debt formerly enslaved people were forced to pay in return for recognising the island’s independence, a coalition of civil society groups said on Thursday. The Caribbean island became the first in the world to win its independence in 1804 after a revolt by enslaved people. But in a move that many Haitians blame for two centuries of turmoil, France later imposed harsh reparations for lost income and that debt was only fully repaid in 1947. They say the money should go to public works in Haiti where a transition council was installed this month in an effort to restore security after a period of devastating violence by armed groups. The French Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “It’s $21 billion plus 200 years of interest that France has enjoyed so we’re talking more like $150 billion, $200 billion or more,” said Jemima Pierre, professor of Global Race at the University of British Columbia. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

Black Maternal Health Week Did you know that after giving birth, many “women are sent home and not seen by their care provider again until six weeks” later? But the reality is, maternal care doesn’t end with childbirth—and this is why the concept of the “fourth trimester” was devised. One Black woman is trying to ensure that the mother isn’t discarded during this process. Princess Estocia McKinney-Kirk has over a decade of experience as a doula, and unfortunately experienced this firsthand. When she gave birth to her first baby, McKinney-Kirk discovered that “her own needs were not met during…postpartum recovery.” As she explained, “there was no one I could hire to provide such care for me (not without having to hire three separate people at least),” and thus BelliBind was born.   McKinney-Kirk says BelliBind “was created to fill the void in current post birth recovery support.” BelliBind offers this type of “specialized postpartum care of traditional Bengkung belly binding coupled with body rubs, meditations & fitness guidance,” recovery planning, coaching, and stress relief. This Black Maternal Health Week, the founder spoke with ESSENCE to discuss everything postpartum so that we can ensure that Black moms stay safe and healthy after giving birth. But “Black maternal health is more than just a statistic—it’s a call to action for comprehensive postpartum support,” continued McKinney-Kirk. “The fourth trimester is a critical chapter often overlooked. Let’s rewrite this narrative by offering Black mothers the support they deserve—nurturing their bodies, uplifting their spirits, and safeguarding their well-being. Together, we can redefine postpartum care as a beacon of empowerment and resilience.” #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

A high-level Caribbean ambassador said on Wednesday it was crucial to establish a new international special tribunal to seek reparations for transatlantic slavery and its legacies in today’s society. For over four centuries at least 12.5 million Africans were kidnapped, forcibly transported thousands of kilometres by mainly European ships and merchants and sold into slavery. In a video message at the opening of the PFPAD session on Tuesday, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres reiterated that racism was based on centuries of enslavement and colonialism. He said reparations should be part of efforts to tackle it. The idea of paying reparations or making other amends for transatlantic slavery has a long history and remains deeply disputed, but has been gaining momentum worldwide. Even supporters of the tribunal recognise that establishing it will not be easy. Hurdles include obtaining the cooperation of nations that were involved in transatlantic slavery and the legal complexities of finding responsible parties and determining remedies. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

In a landmark decision, Evanston, a city just north of Chicago, enacted a reparations fund for its Black residents who were at least 18 years old from 1919 until 1969 and their descendants who were affected by systemically racist policies, mainly redlining. Now five years later, millions in funding will be transferred to one of Illinois’s only Black-owned banks. “This is a way that this repair can be multiplied,” Evanston Reparations Committee Chair Robin Rue Simmons announced per the Chicago Tribune. She continued “… $17 million in a Black bank is going to give more lending power and access to Black businesses, Black mortgages that are fair and other forms of support so this is a very, very big deal. The institution in question, Liberty Bank, is valued at $1 billion per the outlet. Liberty Bank also provided services for first-time home buyers who chose to use their reparations funding for mortgages and has offered 100% refinancing on predatory loans, the outlet reports. The fund is just the first step that its proponents plan to take to narrow the racial wealth gap and enact significant economic justice for Black people in the area. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack

He was a Black Brazilian sailor who led an unprecedented mutiny against abuse by white officers, and helped end flogging in the country’s navy – only to be imprisoned, persecuted and die in poverty. For five days in 1910, João Cândido Felisberto held Rio de Janeiro hostage under the guns of the Brazilian fleet, in an uprising known as the Revolt of the Lash. Thousands of Black sailors joined the mutiny, which took place just 22 years after Brazil abolished slavery. The mutineers achieved their main goal – the end of corporal punishment. In the petition he filed last month, Araujo accused the navy of the “incessant persecution” of the Black Admiral. He addressed his petition to an amnesty commission attached to the human rights ministry, which earlier this month issued Brazil’s first-ever apology for the torture and persecution of Indigenous people during the military dictatorship. Araujo also called on members of congress to approve a bill recognising João Cândido as a Hero of the Nation. #PanAfricanism #BlackNationalism #BlackEmpowerment #AfricanEmpowerment #AfricanAndProud #BlackAndProud #BlackPride #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #Amerikkka #UnapologeticallyBlack #UnapologeticallyAfrican #BlackInAmerica #BlackIsBeautiful #KnowThySelf #KnowledgeOfSelf #KnowledgeOfSelfIsANationality #EconomicEmpowerment #IntegrationFailed #WhiteLiesMatter #Education #AfricanUnification #AfricanUnity #BlackLove #JusticeOrElse #ProBlack
