As we often do when we grab food in town, J and I dropped by my work office to eat. The common area is located on the 4th floor, but old habits died hard and I accidentally hit the 7th floor button first - after all, that’s where I worked every day amongst the Research and Executive teams for almost 10 years before the pandemic hit. Before everyone got sent home and where I’ve been ever since. The elevator reminded me of a work experience that I’ve often shared with others - including even DEIA presentations at work. It’s regarding microaggressions. If you’re not familiar with what microaggressions are, they are the everyday slights, insults, putdowns, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that people (typically of the minority) experience in daily interactions with generally well-intentioned individuals who are usually unaware that they have engaged in demeaning ways. Often times the person who aborbs the microaggression may not be fully conscious of it - or more often than not, they simply “play it off” saying it’s not a big deal, when the truth is it’s more than that. When I worked at the downtown office, I was lucky enough to use our parking garage, which consisted of either the 2nd or 3rd floors of our 7 floor building. Getting into the elevator after parking, there would often be someone already inside coming up from the first floor. If they were by the buttons, many times whoever it was would be nice enough to ask what floor I needed. I’d just tell them 7 - the floor I’d worked on ever since we moved there. Now the first couple of times this next incident happened, I didn’t think too much of it. But after a while, it honestly got kind of old. There would be times when I’d get in the elevator and the person there would not only ask what floor but add on a suggestion - do you need the 5th floor? The 5th floor you see, was where the IT support people worked. No, I’d politely respond - I’m on the 7th floor - and over the course of time, depending on the day that response might come with an awkward pause and possibly an awkward stare. A simple look at me and since I’m of Asian descent, I must work in IT right? 🙄

STRUGGLING FOR FREEDOM OR SUCCUMBING TO TRADITION? So, I happened to catch "LAAPATAA LADIES" last night, and let me tell you, it got me thinking. The movie didn't just entertain; it stirred up some buried emotions within me. Each character's journey of self-discovery, triumph over societal norms, and breaking stereotypes resonated deeply with me. Growing up in a conservative family, I found myself conforming to the ghoonghat (veil) tradition post-marriage, a practice that always felt suffocating. Similarly, my dreams of pursuing a Ph.D. were cut short by family obligations, leaving me wondering what could have been. The moment of abandoning my dream B-school and settling for a career that wasn't my first choice still weighs heavy on my heart. It's a painful realization that many of us take decisions based on the wisdom we possess, tinged with years of conditioning. Are sacrificing dreams really worth it? And why do we women constantly find ourselves bound by societal norms and family pressures? Watching the characters in the movie navigate their struggles, triumphing over patriarchy and societal expectations, made me realize that these stories are far too common for many of us. It's a poignant reminder of the battles we silently fight every day. And Ravi Kishan's performance as the corrupt inspector undergoing a transformation? It touched me deeply and reaffirmed my belief in the inherent goodness of humanity. The movie gives hope, subtly questioning patriarchy and delivering many penny dropping moments. Часто, щоб не відчувати внутрішнього конфлікту, особистість відступає в цій боротьбі, безмовно приймаючи сценарій. Яка ціна? Спустошеність, втрата відчуття спокою й задоволення та багато що іншого. Що робити? Розривати з родиною? Ні, працювати над переосмисленням сімейних сценаріїв і м'яко випутуватися з них, не розриваючи родинних зв'язків, наскільки це можливо. Movies often make you think about things that are not obvious until you get into psychological work. Family scenarios are often heavy baggage for a person, a certain template that can determine life decisions, determine the very structure of life in which a person does not feel happy. In captivity of these "it's necessary", "in our family never...", "in our family always...", "remember who you are...", "think about the family..." completely freedom and the desire for ordinary happiness or being oneself are lost. And precisely because the family is important, because we feel love for its members, family scenarios confuse and immobilize. Often, in order not to feel an internal conflict, the individual retreats in this struggle, silently accepting the scenario. What is the price? Desolation, loss of sense of peace and contentment and many other things. What shall I do? Break up with the family? No, work on rethinking family scenarios and gently extricate yourself from them without severing family ties as much as possible.

Just in time for #aapiheritagemonth: Heeey so I had a bit of a rough start during Winter Quarter — my 16-year-old dog, Tulip, passed away, I was sick for about a month, then had a good month and a half of being healthy but was sick again at the very end of Winter Quarter. I had never been sick that much, ever in my life, and just wanted to feel ok but was struggling teaching my classes cause I was experiencing an unusual amount of fatigue from having been sick. Well, I’m so grateful this Spring Quarter, so far, has been filled with light, love, learning, health, and the blossoming of projects that I practically had forgotten about; one of them being a chapter in the textbook Communicated Stereotypes at Work, edited by Anastacia Kurylo and Yifeng Hu, published by Rowman and Littlefield, that came out today! This work has been dear to me because I worked on it through the pandemic in 2020 - 2021, sent in my chapter right before 2022 with the hopes it would be published in 2022. The publication of the book was slowed down and 2023 passed and I sort of forgot about it. Then this spring, I received notice it was going to published in May. To further my surprise some of my Communication Studies academic heroes are also authors in this book such as Dr. Howard Giles, who I remembered interviewing when I was a grad student for a project because I adored his work; one of the rockstar professors from my Ph.D. alma matar, Dr. Alberto Gonzalez; and a scholar I never met, Dr. Deanna L. Fassett, who was a co-author and friend of a special professor of mine who advocated for me when I needed it, Dr. John T. Warren (who passed away only a couple years after I met him). What is your vision of a business? What thoughts come up when you think about a business? Sitting at desk, hierarchy, boss vs. workers, grey buildings, coworking spaces, suits, bad moods, disconnected from your emotions? It's sometimes difficult to step outside of what we think and feel to be normal. We often think it can't be trusted, we're skeptical. Today, we don't necessarily need to be sitting in an office for 8+ hours a day, feel unfulfilled and unhappy of our lives and future. With the online world, as long as you have an internet connection, you can work from anywhere and even take full ownership of your time. Your office isn't a desk anymore, it can be at the beach, in nature, in the middle of the jungle, at the ski-resort, wherever you can imagine. Ever imagined of traveling the world to meet up with your business partners and spend a whole week together? Or go to an offline business meeting walking barefoot and see other business partners do the same? Does this even fit into your image of a business? Well, it did not fit in mine either, to be honest. But since having my own online business, I discovered a whole new concept of what business can be! You can have offline meetings with people from all over the world enjoying valuable speeches of speakers that are just 'normal people', being open, vulnerable, sharing their stories and emotions with you. You feel energized, happy, at home around so many strangers. If you told me I was going to a barefoot business woman, I would not have believed you. I'm breaking my own stereotypical thinking. I see other people breaking stereotypes in this business and it's giving me hope. It's showing me how things can be done differently, that it is possible to step out of what is seen as 'normal' for most people and that's it's possible to embody who you are completely. Sometimes, we need to step a little bit outside our comfort zone, outside of what we know, right into the unknown. Take the leap. Go for it. Tweak your learned ideas a little bit and see what could be possible. What you don't know is not necessarily bad, not to be trusted or fake. Open your heart and mind and see what happens <3

Shamaya is a loner, cool and no nonsense, but a great mom. Aneesa is well mannered and gutsy. She hates her mom , Shamaya, for lying to her about her dad. Everybody has a secret and secrets are dangerous. As we know. The plot is thin. The characters are well developed. The story doesn’t unfold chronologically, rather through flashbacks. The flow between characters and past and present makes for a pleasant rhythm and pleasing tension. BUT: Suddenly the dinamic changes. As life does. Sensitive & poignant writing .
