On January 19, 2024, I participated in a group art show called “Face It,” put together by @chaparrelle. The themes were connection, facing reality, and facing each other. Initially I was going to weave a floor-to-ceiling VHS tape weaving of the movie “Face Off” starring Nic Cage and John Travolta. I was going to watch the movie 6 times in a row while weaving the tapes. It was a fun idea but didn’t really mean anything more than just being a clever joke. I was really busy with @warm.shape , my local art consignment shop in Tucson, so the weaving idea was too big to take on anyway. Then I had the idea to show up to the art show with no art, just a clipboard with a stack of paper and a few markers. I wanted to draw everyone at the event and put them up on my wall as I created them. I wanted to interact and connect. So I put up a handwritten sign reading “Face Me.” It turned out to be a huge success! I had a line all night and “Faced” about 40 people in 3 hours’ time. My favorite part, aside from gazing at so many beautiful and unique faces, is the vulnerability and connection that can happen as we face each other. I love seeing and hearing what comes up for people, being looked at like this. Regarded so deeply. I love to regard you and connect with you. I loved it so much that after the event I decided to implement “Face Me” at Warm Shape as a permanent offering. Since then I’ve drawn countless portraits and it’s fun and interesting every single time. There is also a LOT of laughter involved (not shown in this post but I’ll share more soon). I’ve been doing lots of quick contour or blind contour portraits using Sktchy models. I try not to look during most of the drawing but usually cheat during eye placement. I find this sort of exercise really interesting. It’s helping me see and loosen up my style. Edward 🌾 stopped by with his two kids, told me he needed a new picture for his social media- I felt the pressure 😄 ... i usually don’t paint people in entirely, just a spot here and there, but when I showed Edward a version that only had a few splashes for his skin, he said, “almost, but it looks a bit like a white man.” I agreed, so i painted in the hues of his skin tone. So much better! As a white portraiture artist, this was an interesting lesson and has me asking questions. Am I perpetuating color-blindness if I don’t color people in? Some I had clearly mixed with white as they were sort of opaque??😖 Tried to salvage it with colored pencils.
