Sixth and eighth grade art classes went outside for the beautiful weather today! Students took their passports (the sketchbooks I made for them during the first week of school) and pencils, and learned how to make a blind contour drawing. It’s not often you get to do art with someone who is such an embodied artist at such a young age! River and his mom Frankie came over yesterday to play in my studio and do blind contour drawings. when I pulled out the red blue and yellow to give a little lesson on primary colors, River looked at me and said “oh the primary colors.” As though I needed to teach him. Lol he already knew. It was his choice to do blind contour together. We had a blast. I look forward to our next date. If you want inspiration for your own art own art, make art with kids. Lately I have been leaning into things that don’t serve me; feelings of lack, desperation, stress, overthinking and overworking. Yesterday I was the @warm.shape shopkeeper. I had spun out so hard on my to-do list all week that I felt I had nothing to offer. I was exhausted. So I just sat there. I even put my head down and dozed off for a while. I felt like I’d been trying so so hard to get people to take me up on my portraiture without luck. So I sat there after deciding I wasn’t going to try anymore for a while. I wanted to be in the moment instead of scheming and posting and pushing and forcing. Then this cute group of people came in and I chatted them up, just enjoying their company. This person Sal and their dog Markie ended up Facing Me. Turns out they’d been in a few times for a portrait but I was never there. So we did it and it turned out SO GREAT. When I spun the drawing around Sal laughed, and the laughter turned to tears. Then I was tearing up and it was just so good for my spirit. There really is something about the Face Me experience that goes both ways and is so uplifting and connective. It is at times therapeutic for all of us. Some people have called it “Portrait Therapy.” The act of seeing and being seen and having this drawing to commemorate the experience and connection can be really powerful. Connection, laughter and crying are EVERYTHING. The day before yesterday I received a message from @trashley0330 that the portrait I drew of her family made her cry. So then I was crying too. A couple of drawings I coloured with my non dominant (left) hand. I’m trying to practice using my left hand for as many things as I can since my right hand is often in pain if I use it too much (looking at you gardening season). Swipe for an awkward AF video. It’s sooo hard.
