What’s really important to me (can you tell?) 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 But why is this? Of course there’s the obvious environmental importance of trees, PLUS they are so damn beautiful to look at, AND they simply make us feel physically better when we are near them (forest bathing is a real scientific thing!!) But it’s deeper than that…I’m beginning to realise there’s also an emotional reason. Those Sunday walks through the woods when I was young. Having so much fun with my mum and dad, sisters and brother, playing hide and seek together, collecting funny shaped sticks, kicking the autumn leaves, making helicopters with the sycamore seeds 😊 A time when we had no adult ‘stuff’ to deal with - we just wanted to have fun. And somehow, now, recreating that time from the woods, shows up in my paintings?! I guess that’s why I paint my forest scenes from my imagination - there’s so much historical inspiration waiting to burst out! I’m beginning to realise that even my process is playful, smoodging the bright colours around, getting my fingers into the paint, using fun tools. The foliage and shapes become exaggerated and then there’s those dreamy treetops… I’m drawing upon all those wonderful memories and blending them together with my present life - exploring Boranup Forest, walking the Cape to Cape, or my dog walks through my local woods or parks, seeking calmness, perspective and awe. Layer upon layer of forest imagery imprinted on my soul. And now out it all comes…into my paintings that hopefully will offer you some of that forest magic too 💚 Kx 🌿 #treelover #forestbathing #forestlovers #forestlover #boranupforest #boranup #boranupkarriforest #treepainting #treeart #treelife #forestart #forestpainting #margaretriver #capetocape #capetocapetrack #westernaustralia #waartist #margaretriverartist #connectedartists #connectedartistclub #connectedartistclub #discovermargaretriver #australiassouthwest

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge was formed over millions of years, as ancient sand dunes were fused together by carbon dioxide-rich waters 💧 Rainwater has gracefully carved through the limestone of the ridge, creating a mesmerizing network of caves filled with crystal formations. If you have a love for nature, science, or adventure, exploring this region and its natural underground wonders is an absolute must. 📸 : @shellcooper_

Mammoth Cave isn't the only massive thing to see here. Above ground, the towering karri trees will leave you in awe from the moment you arrive 🌳 Boranup Forest is home to pale-barked karri trees that can reach heights of over 60 metres! 🌏 The karri trees in this area are the furthest west they can be found and are listed among the world's tallest trees. Though the specimens in this area are relatively young, karri trees can grow much larger.

🔦 "The cave is marvellous all on its own, but the audio tour made it that much better! My dinosaur-obsessed 7-year-old asked if there would be fossils at the cave before we went, and I told him "no", but I was wrong; there were fossils right in the cave wall, and it was fascinating to learn about them. Highly recommend!" Thank you Timothy for the five star Google review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mammoth Cave is named because of its mammoth size, it's 30 metres deep, and 80 metres long! 🦴 There were many ancient megafauna fossils found here, like giant pythons, giant echidnas and giant wallabies - but no mammoths! 📷 Thank you for visiting @rooftoppingaroundaus - We hope you're enjoying the sights of the amazing south west!

🔦 Inside Mammoth Cave, you can see many different types of speleothems that have formed over thousands of years. Their appearance depends entirely on whether the water drips, flows, seeps or sits in pools as it passes through the limestone💧 Rainwater dissolves some of the limestone and creates a solution of calcium carbonate. This solution is then deposited in the cave as calcite, forming all kinds of weird and beautiful speleothems. 📷@elementsmargaretriver

It's an otherworldly experience, simply being within the Boranup Karri Forest. 📸 @sandymammoth captured the magic superbly, sunlight glinting through the salmon pink trunks 🌱 There's the feeling of being dwarfed by nature and completely surrounded by 60-metre-tall trees, as they reach far into the distance in every direction 🌲   Birds whistle and sing as they dart about, too fast to be seen. And the breeze gently stirs the canopy, completely absorbed by the treetops. Protected by the sun, the forest feels cooler, more protected than the coastline nearby. While simply walking through the forest is plenty, there's also fantastic guided experiences on offer for a deeper understanding of the history, majesty and delicate ecosystems here. Try @margaretrivermountainbiketours, @jestersflatequestrian horse riding experiences and @ecoadventuresmargaretriver electric quad bike tours 🚲🐎

🦴 Australia's prehistoric past was home to some of the mightiest creatures ever to roam the earth! Around 25 million years ago, giant kangaroos, wombats and goannas the size of small cars ruled the land down under. These amazing creatures went extinct around 46,000 years ago, leaving nothing but fossils behind for us to marvel at.

Djilba 🌼 August-September As the days start to warm up, explosions of wildflowers bloom in the South West over Djilba. Yonga Marra (Kangaroo Paw) begins to flower yellow blossoms, and Koola (Emu Plum) starts to fruit. It is also a great time to try and catch some djildjit (fish). This is a transitional time of year with some cold and clear days mixed with rainy, windy and occasional sunny days. The controlled burning from previous seasons brings lush growth of green grasses which attracts animals. The kyooya (frog) can be heard from the wetlands.
