We had a great time representing both Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services and @oceanstatevetspecialists at the @umassvettech Career Fair! It was wonderful to meet some new faces and the next generation of technicians that will be graduating shortly. Cassidy (on the left) graduated from the UMass Amherst Veterinary Technology program in 2021 and is one of our technicians at OSVS. Cassidy loved the Veterinary Technology program at UMass Amherst, it provided her with hands-on training and a great education. Her senior year was spent doing internships in six different hospitals. She learned to be adaptable in each hospital setting and felt ready to dive into veterinary medicine once she graduated. #veterinarytech #veterinarytechnician #vettech #umass #veterinarytechnology #vetmed #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #criticalcare #care #veterinaryspecialists #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet Kira Valentine, our supportive and fearless Hospital Manager at BSVESS! Kira started working at our sister hospital in 2019 as an overnight ICU Technician, but when the opportunity became available in 2021, she moved over to BSVESS to become the Hospital Manager. Kira was well-prepared for the challenge, having successfully served as Director of Veterinary Nursing for an emergency and critical care specialty hospital in North Carolina; Hospital Manager for an emergency hospital in Maryland; and an ICU nurse at North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. Kira is a Certified Veterinary Technician; has a B.S. in Neuroscience and Psychobiology from Drew University; a Masters in Non-Profit Administration from Louisiana State University; and has nearly completed a second Masters in Social Work from Rhode Island College. All through childhood, Kira dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and, toward that goal, started volunteering at a local nature center and a veterinary clinic, beginning at age twelve. Following her undergraduate work and first exposure to the field, however, she actually found her passion and strength in veterinary nursing and management – discovering that it afforded her a much broader band-width of skillsets and care for animals, staff, and clients. During her 24-year career, Kira has watched veterinary medicine evolve in scope and culture. Kira has always been the person whom people seek for support and counsel. It is one of her many strengths. Currently and increasingly, there is a mental health crisis in the veterinary community; and as she’s witnessed it firsthand, she has made the significant decision to change her personal mission. She is still committed to veterinary medicine, but her concentration has shifted from one caring primarily for animals to one that keys in on caring for the people who treat the animals. To this end, she decided to get academic training, augment her credentials, and expand her knowledge and experience. This is us Thursday! Meet Natalie Rosenstein, one of our dedicated ER and critical care specialists. Natalie graduated from Ross University and then spent 1 year at the Ohio State University for her clinical. Which then led her to our sister hospital OSVS where she completed her internship and residency. She has now been at BSVESS for just under a year and has been working on expanding our critical care program. Her interests include critical anesthesia and her research was in decontamination and toxins. BSVESS is a referral emergency and specialty animal hospital. We can take on a whole range of cases and we can provide 24/7 care that a regular general practice or urgent care is not able to provide. One moment we will be taking care of a pet with a broken toenail, the next we could be caring for a pet that needs to be ventilated. As we grow into the new hospital currently being built, we will be able to care for more pets in need of critical care which is exciting to Natalie! Natalie loves the fast-paced environment of the ER. Helping pets that are on the brink of passing away, and being able to provide them critical care to make them healthy to go home with their families is what drives Natalie. Performing CPR is truly a team effort, Natalie loves being able to bring back a patient with life-saving measures. It is extremely gratifying to be able to save a life. She relies heavily on our team to support her and truly feels that BSVESS is a wonderful work environment because of her coworkers and colleagues. Everyone works together as a team and is all there for the same reason, to provide high-quality medicine. Natalie had dedicated her career to working with families that have financial constraints. She wants to make sure that every pet has access to care no matter the situation. #thisisusthursday #doctorspotlight #care #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #criticalcare #veterinaryspecialists #vetmed #veterinarian #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet one of our dedicated doctors, Ann Klocke, VMD. Dr. Klocke works as an Emergency Clinician at BSVESS and at our sister hospital Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. She is celebrating fifteen years with us! Dr. Klocke grew up in the Philadelphia area and received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Georgetown University prior to attending the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she completed a rotating internship at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital located just outside of Boston. Dr. Klocke started working with us as a "temporary" plan with the intention of moving back to Boston. However, she was learning so much from the specialists and felt she was practicing such strong medicine, it was hard to consider going elsewhere! Additionally, she really fell in love with Rhode Island, it’s such a great little state with so much to offer and a beautiful coastline. Dr. Klocke truly cares for animals and working with animals every day brings her so much joy. When patients come in that are critical and very sick, as a team they are able to offer treatment and care, watching these patients improve and return home to their families fills her heart. Being a part of that transformation is truly the best feeling! Every day is different, which is why Dr. Klocke never gets in with emergency medicine. She maybe treating something simple and straightforward one minute, then have to stabilize a critical patient next. Dr. Klocke loves working at both hospitals. She feels very connected to the doctors, veterinary technicians and the rest of our staff. We are often doing very serious, stressful work, but we can also be silly and make each other laugh each day. It is incredibly important and it makes us feel like a little family. This is us Thursday! Meet Savannah Santos, one of our kind technician assistants. Savannah has worked with us at BSVESS for one year. She LOVES animals. Working in animal medicine has been a lifelong dream and she is so happy that she gets to spend her days contributing to their wellbeing. Previous to starting her journey at BSVESS Savannah worked in human medicine and at a zoo. She decided to switch paths to explore veterinary emergency medicine because she left like she wanted to experience something different and learn new skills. The past year has completely transformed her career path! She is currently working on becoming a CVT (certified veterinary technician) and hopes in the future to work as a technician in Internal Medicine and get her VTS (veterinary technician specialist) which requires additional training in order to receive credentials. Savannah loves working at BSVESS. She has learned so much in her one year here. We are a small hospital with many moving parts. When she first started, she had no ER experience and now, she feels confident in what she is doing because of the amazing training she has received from her coworkers. Savannah spends her days restraining animals, doing blood work, TAing in our Internal Medicine department and working in reception when needed. When she is working in Internal Medicine she helps to administer chemotherapy, restrains for ultrasounds and builds relationships with our clients. Connecting with clients and their pets is really where Savannah shines. Savannah is heading to Florida as her next step to work at Animal Kingdom, where she is doing an internship through Disney. She will be teaching guests how to dig up fossils and will help to explain what bones represent which dinosaur at Dinoland. Once she completes this internship, she will be returning back to BSVESS to continue on her path of becoming a CVT! Outside of work Savannah spends her time reading, hanging out with her dog, Becca Flapjack that is a Doberman-Pyrenees mix and spends time with her family. Savannah is a Disney fanatic and has made many trips to Disney both as a child and an adult. Disney is her thing!!

Our sister hospital Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is hosting a Blood Drive, they are partnering with the Rhode Island Blood Center tomorrow, Wednesday, March 27th. OSVS and BSVESS staff will be donating blood to help save human lives! We are having this event to give back to the community and to raise awareness about our animal Blood Bank that we share at both hospitals. Just like in a human hospital, as emergency veterinary hospitals, we are in constant need of blood products to treat life-saving conditions in dogs and cats. BSVESS and OSVS depends on the generosity and cooperation of donors and their owners – who truly are the heroes, ensuring that we have life-saving blood components available at all times. If you are interested in learning more about our Blood Bank, to see if your dog can be a hero, check out: osvs.net/blood-bank/ We invite you to stop by tomorrow during the OSVS Blood Drive to learn more about our shared Blood Bank ❤ #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialityservices #osvs #oceanstateveterinaryspecialists #care #blooddrive #donateblood #bloodbank #ribloodcenter #rhodeislandbloodcenter #rhodeisland #newengland #massachusetts #vetmed #givingback #veterinaryspecialists #er #criticalcare #icu #urgentcare #veterinarycare

This is us Thursday! Meet Lexi, one of our devoted customer service representatives. Lexi has worked with us at BSVESS for 3 years. She helps with client registration, answers our phones, works with our technicians, technician assistants and veterinarians as a point of contact. Previous to working with us Lexi worked in retail. She grew up always loving animals and felt like animal care was her calling. That is when she decided to apply to BSVESS. Lexi is grateful for the experience this job has given her. She loves being in the veterinary field and learning about the business and animals. She is a wonderful resource for both our clients and our employees. Lexi has a close bond with her coworkers she truly appreciates the people she works with at BSVESS. They have some new faces on the CSR team and she is enjoying teaching them the ropes and getting to know her new coworkers. She is really excited to see the new BSVESS building and expand into our new space. She is looking forward to what opportunities will arise with the expansion! Lexi is there from the moment you walk through the door, to the moment you are ready to cash out and leave the hospital to help answer questions. She enjoys connecting with our clients to help them feel assured and to ease their nerves during difficult times. A large part of Lexi’s job is being a support system during end-of-life decisions. She knows it is a really tough place to be in and it brings her peace to know she is able to help when families are in need of comfort and care that she can be there for them. She knows that each person will never forget who helped them with their pets last moments and the love that was given to their pet during that time. #thisisusthursday #employeespotlight #appretiation #care #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #veterinaryspecialists #er #icu #criticalcare #emergency #massachusetts #newengland

Meet the staff Monday! Meet Justin Ferreira, one of our wonderful Technician Assistants. Justin works four days a week at BSVESS, two days in surgery and two days in the ER and ICU. He has been with us for almost one year. Previous to working with us he was working at a doggy day care. He liked the job but did not find it very demanding or fulfilling. So, he decided to apply to BSVESS. Since he has been working as a TA, he feels like he has learned so much. He says that this is the best job he has ever had! His two days in surgery are spent preparing pets for surgeries, cleaning the operating room and monitoring anesthesia for our patients. When he is working in the ER and ICU, he is helping technicians with treatments and tirages, and cleaning and stocking the hospital. Justin loves the work environment at BSVESS. It makes working an enjoyable experience being able to care for animals feels very heartwarming and fulfilling. Even when it is sad, he and his coworkers are there together working for a greater cause. When Justin prepares pets at the hospital to be euthanized, he makes sure to make each pet looks their best and be comforted for their final moments. He knows how hard it is for families and wants their loved ones to be remembered in their best light. Outside of work Justin plays with his two black cats, Onyx a 7-year-old with no teeth and Moon a 10-month-old kitten. He and his wife are also fostering a cat named Elmer who is a 4-month-old Tabby cat, which they are in the process of adopting. Clearly Justin is a cat person. His favorite patients at the hospital are in fact caution cats. Justin spends his free time playing video games, eating, and reading up on veterinary textbooks to educate himself. Justin recently got married in October and they spent their honeymoon traveling through New England. #meetthestaffmonday #employeespotlight #care #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #icu #er #criticalcare #surgery #veterinaryspecialists #massachusetts #newengland

Did you know that veterinary medicine is a female-dominated industry, with approximately 65% of its workforce being women? We are strong, we are resilient, we are powerful, we are smart, we are kind, we are bold, we are empowered, we are nurturing, we are caretakers, we are leaders, we are dreamers, we are educators, we are problem solvers, we are collaborators, we are women! Happy International Women's Day from Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services! In 2009, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reported that women outnumbered men in the veterinary field for the first time. Meet Simba! Simba’s current owner took him in four years ago as an emergency medical foster. Simba was found tied to a truck in Florida, his previous family had moved without him. He had years of chronic skin disease and infection, was heartworm, positive and had untreated food and environmental allergies. When she started fostering him, she was working at a general practice and her plan was to nurse him back to health and help find a home for him. Within the first five months of having him, Simba ended up at BSVESS in critical condition, his skin infection had become septic. After two ER trips his foster parents decided to adopt him! They proceeded to fight for Simba and pursue medical intervention. The next year was spent trialing medications and different foods. It took about two years to get his skin allergies under control and once he seemed stable, he was diagnosed with diskospondylitis and lumbosacral stenosis. Under the incredible care of the surgery and neurology team at OSVS and BSVESS they decided to peruse surgery at OSVS. Dr. Marini helped to guide Simba’s owners in this process and Dr. Coronado preformed Simba’s surgery at OSVS. Simba is now on his road to recovery! Despite his history of neglect by humans he remains the happiest dog and absolutely loves humans. Simba loves car rides, snacks, booty scratches, playing with his sisters and snuggling with his mom. #successstory #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #osvs #oceanstateveterinaryspecialists #care #surgery #ter #icu #criticalcare #urgentcare #neurology #veterinaryspecialists #vetmed #rescue #rhodeisland #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet one of our lovely customer service representatives, Alicia Patterson. Alicia has been working with us for 6 years. Previous to joining our team she was a dog groomer in Bristol, Rhode Island. When she got married, they wanted to start planning to have a family, she needed something with a set schedule which dog grooming was not able to provide. So, she decided to apply to BSVESS and started working with us on our reception team. Alicia starts her days at BSVESS taking a peek to see who is in the hospital. She loves being able to see our patients. Once she says hello to our patients she heads to the front where she answers the phones, checks clients in and out and makes appointments for patients. Alicia knows that communication is such a large part of her role. She spends a lot of her time connecting with veterinary hospitals to obtain records and works with our doctors to help prioritize cases. Alicia loves helping both people and their pets. When we have calls about cases that are non-life-threatening Alicia tries her best to gather as much information that she can and helps them to find care for their pet at other local hospitals depending on where they are coming from. Alicia has a very large heart. She feels so much compassion for people that are dealing with tough cases, here for end-of-life care and euthanasia’s. She tries to remember that everyone deals with difficult situations, loss and grief differently and keeps an open heart filled with compassion for what our clients are going through. #thisisusthursday #employeespotlight #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #care #er #icu #criticalcare #urgentcare #veterinaryspecialists #csr #reception #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet one of our dedicated Certified Veterinarian Technicians, Kelly Williams. Kelly has been with BSVESS since 2017. Kelly always had a love for animals and wanted to make caring for animals her career one day. Previous to working with us she worked in retail and knew she was ready to make a career change so she decided to peruse an online Tech Assistant program in 2016. Once she graduated, she did an externship and then worked at a general practice where she did appointments and vaccines. Her time at the GP was short because she knew she wanted more variety in her day to day. That is when she decided to apply to BSVESS as a Tech Assistant. Kelly started at BSVESS in 2017 and is so happy she joined the Bay State team. She loves her job and feels so connected to our patients and her coworkers. #thisisusthursday #employeespotlight #care #technician #cvt #er #icu #criticalcare #urgentcare #bsvess #baystateemergencyspecialtyservices #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet our amazing Client Service Manager, Kara DeMello! Growing up, Kara’s dad rescued animals and introduced her to adopting and caring for them at a young age, which, in turn, ignited the passion she chose to pursue as a career. Kara has been working with us at BSVESS going on 6 years. Before joining us here at Bay State, Kara was employed at a general practice as a Client Service Manager and Technician. After hearing that BSVESS was a great place to work, she joined our team in 2018. She now manages our team of CSR’s and everything reception related. Kara’s myriad responsibilities include being the first line in communication with clients and knowing that when people call, they are in the midst of an emergency and are distressed. She is there to listen and offer advice about how to proceed when making the decision bring their pets in for treatment. She strives to make each client feel comfortable and reassured while coming to the hospital. Our hospital has many moving parts, but reception really sets the wheels in motion. From the first interactions while pets are being admitted, to the last few steps of being discharged, Kara knows that her efforts, along with the rest of the CSR’s working at BSVESS, go far in how the clients perceive the hospital and can help ease the anxiety of having to admit their pets for medical care. #employeespotlight #employeeappreciation #care #bsvess #baystateemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #criticalcare #veterinaryspecialists #massachusetts #newengland

This tiny kitten was brought to us by Providence Animal Control Center. He was covered in fleas and stuck in a glue trap. He was hypothermic, starving and recumbent. Here are some pictures of our team nursing him back to health. They fondly named him Skipper since he smelled like peanut butter, which was used to remove him from the glue trap. He is now thriving, sassy and hungry! #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #care #criticalcare #urgentcare #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet one of our amazing Technician Assistant’s Kayla Pimentel. Kayla has worked at BSVESS for 7 months. Before working with us, Kayla attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated pre-veterinarian in May of 2023. After school she was trying to figure out what she wanted to do. She though about working with wildlife, large animals or even going to a general practice. That’s when she decided to apply to BSVESS to work in our emergency department. This is her first medical position and is so happy she decided to work with us! She loves emergency. At first it was intense but after a month she began to appreciate the fast-paced environment and feels really comfortable. Typically, you can find Kayla making sure the hospital is stocked, stepping in, helping techs, other TA’s, and our veterinarians and running lab work in our ER. Her co-workers know that she is able to step in and help when needed which is a great feeling. Kayla enjoys seeing the same patient’s day to day and gets so happy to see them go home, it is truly the best feeling. It is definitely difficult seeing patients’ day after day that do not make it. It is heartbreaking but it feels good to know that they were cared for in their final days. Recently Kayla has learned a lot of about anesthetic monitoring for procedures and every aspect of treatment, medications, what they do and what they are used for. Eventually Kayla would like to become a tech, it is nice to learn from many different people that she works with. She likes that so much of the training offered for our technician training is done by our current certified vet technicians. Kayla feels extremely comfortable with her co-workers. She feels like she can trust her co-workers, has become friends with them and knows she has a good support system at work. Which is invaluable. #thisisusthursday #employeespotlight #care #bsvess #baystateemergencyveterinaryspecialtyservices #care #icu #er #criticalcare #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet one of our hardworking Certified Veterinary Technicians, Hailey Smith. When Hailey was growing up, she dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and that was her plan up until high school. She decided to pursue becoming a Zookeeper at Unity College in Maine. While in Zookeeper school she switched gears to Veterinary Technician school. Her love for animals shown through and she felt confident in her career path. Once she graduated, she spent two and half years working at a General Practice. Then during peak COVID in 2020 she decided she was ready for a change and started working with us at BSVESS. It was such different atmosphere than GP. While working in GP she generally saw ear infections and routine checkups. Now she can place nasogastric tubes, tend to bite wounds, handle urinary obstructions, set cast placements and dress bandages, and feels like she is making a huge impact on the lives that she touches. She typically works mostly in our emergency room but spends one day in the ICU. She is really excited about BSVESS expanding and is looking forward to seeing the new advanced technology we will be able to offer to our patients and clients. #thisisusthursday #employeespotlight #care #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #criticalcare #urgentcare #tech #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet Julie Barbetta one of our amazing ER Technicians. Julie grew up on a farm with all types of animals’ pigs, sheep, chickens, cows, horses, goats, dogs and cats in Plymouth Massachusetts. When she graduated high school, she began her career as a hair dresser. She had an eye-opening experience delivering puppies, where her dog had to be rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital because the dog was struggling to deliver. After that experience Julie knew, she was destined to work in an emergency hospital. She was in awe by what took place and was so happy that her dog ended up delivering her puppies successfully. She then started her vet med career as a Tech Assistant working at Mass-RI Veterinary ER where she worked for four years and trained to become a Technician. She was ready for a change so she decided to apply to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists our sister hospital. She started at OSVS in 2020 and eventually transferred to Bay State Emergency and Specialty Services. Three years ago, a lot was going on - the start of the pandemic, crazy weather, you name it. And that was exactly when we landed at the ER with Sadie, not knowing how much things would change. That was the night we discovered the cysts on Sadie's kidneys (later to be kidney, singular). It was terrifying. I didn't know how long we'd have with her, or what would happen - I found myself hoping that we'd get another year, maybe two. No idea what to expect. . The thing is, that's also the night that @bsvess joined Sadie's team, and I couldn't be more thankful for that, or for them. From that first night - triaging carside during an intense storm during a pandemic, still taking time to make sure we knew what was going on and felt cared for - to the many visits with Sadie's now-favorites Dr. Block and Abby - answering our ridiculous amount of questions, always so kind and gentle with our nerd - they've taken amazing care of us. . And here we are, the years out, still hoping for a couple more, watching as our Complicated Peanut does high-speed yard patrols, chasing frogs and groundhogs, happy and strong and so full of life. We truly do have the very best team, and there isn't a day I'm not thankful for them, and for all of the time and adventures they've helped to ensure we continue to have. ♥️ . #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #polycystickidneydisease #caninekidneydisease #veterinaryprofessionalsrock

Meet two of our surgery patients at BSVESS, Alfred & Harold! Alfred had been struggling with a limp for several months, his owners had found out that he was having some issues with vertebrae in his spine. His owners decided to have his TPLO repaired hoping it will greatly help with his overall discomfort. Harold was the first one to have TPLO surgery with Dr. Besancon. So, when Alfred starting limping his owners knew where to go to get him the best care. Harold is a two and a half year old English Bulldog, he is spunky and very sassy, and provides all the comedy between this dynamic duo. His family likes to call him their sour patch kid. He is the star of the show wherever he goes, and he knows it too. He loves to go for rides, likes to meet new people at Home Depot and Petco, and will never turn down a bum scratch. Alfred is a five year old English Mastiff and is generally a very healthy boy, his owners were starting to see some of the ailments that come with getting older. Some of Alfred’s favorite activities include taking long naps by the fireplace, looking outside his favorite window, greeting visitors at the door with his favorite stuffed cow. Naps! He loves to curl up and snuggle the couch with his humans. He’s your typical, lazy English Mastiff. He is the biggest sweetest baby, and a gentle giant in every way. Alfred, we hope you are relaxing and recovering from surgery, make sure Harold takes care of you! #surgery #bsvess #baystateemergencyveterinaryspecialityservices #care #er #icu #urgentcare #massachusetts #newengland

Dogs are extremally curious and often get into human medications. With the rising numbers of people experiencing asthma and using albuterol inhalers, it means the numbers of dog injuries from accidental poisoning are rising. A dog can chew an asthma inhaler which results in the container being punctured with a dose of albuterol delivered in one massive overdose. Albuterol elevates your dog’s heart rate to dangerous levels and reduces potassium levels in the blood. Please keep albuterol inhalers away from your pets. If you think your dog has ingested albuterol call 508-379-1233 immediately. #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #care #urgentcare #criticalcare #albuterol #albuteroltoxicity #emergencyroom #massachusetts #newengland #veterinaryspecialists

This is us Thursday! Meet Dani Hill, her career at BSVESS has spanned the last 12 years, and Dani is not only our Surgical Technician Manager, but she is also an Emergency and ICU tech. In high school Dani’s focus was on large animal science. Although she chose to attend college for business management, she continued to maintain her passion for veterinary medicine by working in a General Practice throughout school. Dani truly enjoys working with her co-workers and loves each of her patients. Providing the highest quality of care from admission to discharge is rewarding in and of itself, but being able to see a healthy pet and a happy owner reunited is what makes the toughest parts of the job worth it. Although Dani loves all of the pets that come through the hospital, she has a definite soft spot for feisty German Shepard's! Outside of work Dani likes horseback riding, working on her farm, selling home grown farm goods, crafting and photography. She also likes to go hiking and spend time outside in nature with her animals. #thisisusthursday #staffspotlight #employeeappreciation #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #massachusetts #newengland #southernnewengland #surgery #care #er #icu #urgentcare #veterinaryspecialists #vetmed

We are celebrating Natalie Rosenstein our newest DACVECC!!!! 🌟✨🌟 What is a DACVECC? DACVECC is a board-certified Specialist in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. A DACVECC Specialist completes 8 years of schooling, but then goes on for advanced training. After completing a regular Veterinary degree, Specialists are required to complete internship and residency programs. Which is typically a minimum of 4-5 additional years after Veterinary school providing intense training in ECC. Residency training is completed through an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) approved training program. Residency programs in ECC focus on the most up-to-date techniques for diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening disease processes in the emergency and intensive care unit setting. The ECC residency is supervised by mentors that are board-certified specialists (DACVECC). Once the resident has completed these 4-5 additional years of specialty internship and residency training, the individual must then pass a rigorous, 2-day board certification examination given by American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC). Upon successful completion of the residency training program and passing the examination, the Veterinarian becomes a Diplomate of the ACVECC (DACVECC), is termed a “Specialist”, and is board-certified in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC). - Abbreviated from the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical We are so proud of you ❤ #bsvess #osvs #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #oceanstateveterinaryspecialists #veterinaryspecialists #ecc #criticalcare #icu #er #dacvecc #care #vetmed #rhodeisland #massachusetts #newengland

This is us Thursday! Meet Olivia Major, one of our Emergency and ICU Veterinary Technicians at BSVESS. Prior to working with us at BSVESS, Olivia completed the Animal Science Program at Bristol Community College. As just a few examples of her myriad experiences in the animal world, she volunteered not only for several rescues, but also at the Buttonwood Park Zoo. There, she worked with the elephants, Emily and Ruth, learning first hand about animal husbandry and behavioral enrichment. During her time with them, she was even afforded the opportunity to paint a few pictures with them! She has always felt a connection with animals, one in which she felt like she understood and could empathize with them. When Olivia first started working at BSVESS in 2019 she began as a Technician Assistant. This quickly evolved into her working as a Surgery TA. Olivia’s passion for the surgical service led to her decision to pursue the TA to Tech program offered by BSVESS. Olivia thrives in chaos and loves the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Room. She enjoys being busy and is fascinated by all of the different cases that come through the ER. She never knows what she’s going to see, requiring her to rely on not only her time management skills, but also her ability to multitask, delegate responsibilities, and of course, think on her feet. On a typical day, she comes in and rounds with the overnight technicians, after which she takes over the ICU patients and continues their treatments every two to four hours. Olivia can be managing anywhere from 10-20 ICU patients at a time. Olivia will most often see urinary obstructions, diabetic crisis, hypoglycemic neonates, and patients that are admitted through the ER for procedures. Seeing a pet all the way from admission to the ER through to being discharged home is something that brings Olivia much joy. Our team bonds with each of the pets admitted to the hospital and it is always our hope that once discharged, they are able to continue on with healthy and happy lives at home. #thisisus #staffspotlight #care #er #icu #emergencyroom #er #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #massachusetts #newengland #vetmed

This is us Thursday! Meet Aliah, she is a Surgery Tech Assistant at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services. She started working with animals in 2015 at a Doggy Day Care. Then she worked as a receptionist at Banfield Animal Hospital where she began her journey as a Tech Assistant. This is when she realized how much she enjoyed being a Tech Assistant so she decided to attend CCRI where she graduated with a Veterinary Assistant degree in 2018. In 2020 she applied to BSVESS where she moved into the role as Tech Assistant in Surgery. Aliah really enjoys the flow of surgery, preparing the animal, monitoring during surgery and then once surgery is complete waking the animals up so they can go home to their families. She enjoys working in surgery because her day is very structured, she can prep ahead of time and know which patient is coming in for surgery. When Aliah is not preparing for surgery, she loves working in the lab. She has found a good flow and feels like she can get the lab work done efficiently. When there is an issue with our machines everyone calls Aliah, she enjoys being able to fix the machines and figure out what the issues are, it makes her feel needed and likes to be able to help! Aliah is really fond of her coworkers at BSVESS, it is a very fun work environment. Everyone is very caring, compassionate, it is a great group which feels like a family. The goofy work banter makes the days go by fast and makes the work more enjoyable. Aliah knows she is surrounded by coworkers that will uplift her and make her feel supported. It is a unique environment and a great place to work. Outside of work Aliah loves to stay home and read and play video games. She recently traveled to Scotland to visit her sister, which was absolutely gorgeous. They went to the Botanical Gardens in Glasgow which was her favorite place to visit and highlight of her trip! She has three cats, Corrie, Duncan and Loki. Corrie is her favorite and extremely feisty, Duncan is young, very relaxed and super low key, Loki is older and constantly referred to as a grumpy old man. #thisisus #staffspotlight #care #er #icu #criticalcare #surgery #bsvess #baystateveterinary

This is us Thursday! Meet Mark Georgio, one of our Surgical & Anesthesia Technicians at BSVESS. Mark has worked with us for the past eight years. Mark has a long history in the veterinary field, with his career spanning over twenty- two years. He began his career as a Tech Assistant at Atwood Animal Hospital. In just two years there he had trained as a technician. Looking for a new challenge, he moved on to Ocean State where he discovered his passion for Emergency medicine and surgery. Ready for a change of scenery, he ventured out into the world and moved to Arizona, where he continued working as a Tech at VCA Emergency Referral Practice where he worked in ICU/Emergency. When he moved back to Rhode Island, he began working at Tufts Grafton in their ER/Critical Care department. Although his passion was always for Emergency/Surgery, he was ready for a break, so he returned to General practice for a few years at Atwood Animal Hospital. However, soon after, his love for Emergency medicine brought him to Baystate, where he's been a part of our family ever since! Mark has worked in several different departments, beginning in Emergency, eventually moving into Internal Medicine and has now found his home in the Surgery Service. He enjoys learning new skills and the complexity of each surgery case is extremely interesting to him. Here at BSVESS, Mark has been working hand in hand with Dr. Besancon and the rest of the surgery service for the last 5 years. He really likes working with all of his co-workers and is always making everyone laugh, realizing that in such a stressful environment, laughter truly is the best medicine! #thisisusthursday #staffspotlight #care #er #icu #criticalcare #surgery #urgentcare #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #massachusetts #newengland

Sadie had a date with her faves Abby, Dr Block, and the rest of the crew at @bsvess to check in with her kidney and liver. Overall, things are looking pretty good - her remaining kidney has a good amount of normal tissue still, and the cyst on the back of it has stayed pretty much the same (actually shrunk a little). The small mass was found on her liver about a year ago. It was 9mm then, and has grown a little, measuring around 10.9mm now. . This Peanut would like it mentioned that she went ALL DAY without snacks for this. Don't worry, she got one of her favorites right after while we talked shop, and didn't pause to move out of the doorway or even lay all the way down before chowing down 😂 . Overall, not too bad! We're still waiting on bloodwork to get the full picture, but we're happy with this. Sadie is happy with her dinner and a new special prize, and we're all ready to flop until bedtime. . As always, a HUGE thank you to the whole Bay State crew for their continued excellent care of our favorite little Peanut ♥️ . . #bsvess #kidneydisease #caninekidneydisease #pkd #thecomplicatedpeanut #ultrasound

This is us Thursday! Meet Austin Caruthers one of our hard-working Veterinary Technicians. Austin has been working at BSVESS for two years. Growing up he had thought about being a doctor and was always really interested in biology but realized that animals were a much better subject. During high school he attended a vocational school where his love for animals was found. He was able to focus his studies on animal science and interned at Bristol County Hospital where he enjoyed working in a hospital setting. After high school he attended the University of Maine where he graduated with an Animal Science degree with a concentration in pre-veterinary medicine. After college he decided to return to Massachusetts and apply to BSVESS as a level one Technician Assistant because he knew he wanted a challenge and emergency medicine intrigued him. Fast forward two years and Austin loves his job! He really enjoys being a part of the BSVESS community. Working in an emergency setting can be stressful and anxiety inducing but the challenge excites him. He really enjoys learning from the other technicians and doctors and enjoys what emergency care brings to the table which is the unknown. He remembers his first stat case where he had to preform CPR and the dog was able to breathe again and was eventually discharged from our care. Seeing patients able go home to their families is an extremely gratifying feeling. It was a pivotal time in his career realizing the work that he was doing was really and truly life saving. Austin is very excited about the new BSVESS building and us expanding. The transition is exhilarating and he wants to see what we will be able to offer when it comes to advanced medicine. Outside of work Austin loves to go fishing, kayaking, hiking with his brother, biking, longboarding, camping and being outside. When the weather is not cooperating, he plays video games and spends time with his cats, Sox and Shadow. He also has two goats Xylo and Viola who are a little rambunctious. They like to munch on the landscape which Austin's dad is not too thrilled about. #thisisus #staffspotlight #employeeappreciation #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservic

Did you know that there is a type of chemotherapy that can be ingested orally for dogs? Chemotherapy is not always injectable and depends on the cancer. Every cancer is different. Brody and his turtle! 🐢🐢🐢 A turtle-shaped rubber fidget toy was dropped on the floor and Brody immediately swallowed it whole. He came to us through our emergency department because he was vomiting and could not keep anything down. Luckily we were able to remove the turtle by endoscopy and Brody did not have to undergo surgery! Brody is now feeling much better. This is a reminder if your animal ingests something that it should not please call us immediately. If the turtle had traveled farther down in Brody's digestive tract into his intestines then we would have had to preform emergency surgery to remove it. We are grateful that the turtle had not traveled that far and that we were able to remove it by scope. #er #emergency #endoscopy #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #care #icu #criticalcare #urgentcare #veterinaryspecialists #internalmedicine #massachusetts #newengland

Meet Shimmer! Shimmer is a sweet kitten that is 12 weeks old. He recently had an accident where he fractured his left humerus. He was brought into our sister hospital Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services where x-rays were done, and it was determined that he needed surgery at OSVS. He was then transferred to OSVS, where Dr. Panissidi and the surgery team performed a left forelimb amputation. He has been doing great since surgery and is back to eating (his favorite activity), running, pouncing, snuggling, and getting cozy with his owner. He is even back to playing with his favorite toy bird that chirps! Both hospitals work together constantly. We have doctors, nurses, and support staff that work at both hospitals. It helps so much to have such a great support system! #surgery #amputation #osvs #oceanstateveterinaryspecialists #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #criticalcare #icu #rhodeisland #newengland #massachusetts #veterinaryspecialists

Today we are celebrating COCO!!! She has finished Chemotherapy and is feeling great. Coco came to BSVESS in March for collapsing. After diagnostics were performed by our emergency team it was noted that her belly was filled with blood and surgery needed to be performed. The source of her bleeding was her spleen which contained a mass. Surgery was performed to remove her spleen and she recovered well from surgery. Unfortunately, her splenic tumor was a cancerous hemangiosarcoma. Her family met with our Internal Medicine team and together they decided the best course of action for Coco was Chemotherapy. Fast forward many visits later, this little lady is cancer free!! #cancer #cancerfree #cancersurvivor #internalmedicine #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #er #icu #criticalcare #care #massachusetts #newengland #chemotherapy #chemo

Say hello to Roscoe on the right and Everhett on the left! Everhett donated blood to save Roscoe who is currently in our emergency care. Roscoe was presented to our sister hospital BSVESS for lethargy and decreased appetite after examination it was determined that Roscoe had a hemoabdomen from the spleen. He was then rushed to OSVS to receive a blood transfusion which was graciously donated by Everhett. Roscoe is still in our care, is doing well, and recovering from surgery where they removed his spleen!! 💙❤💙❤ #osvs #oceanstateveterinaryspecialists #care #er #icu #criticalcare #blooddonor #bloodtransfusion #rhodeisland #newengland #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #massachusetts

This is us Thursday! Meet Rebecca Bacon she is a Certified Veterinary Tech, Surgery Tech, ER/ICU Tech, and our Tech Assistant Manager at BSVESS. Rebecca went to New England Tech and got an opportunity to work at a General Practice. She always wanted to work in ER. When the opportunity arose, she decided to join our team and has been working at BSVESS for almost 5 years. After working at BSVESS for three years she took the VTNE and passed! Rebecca loves the fast pace environment of ER. She enjoys placing catheters and performing life-saving treatments. Table cases and critical care are really what makes Rebecca excited about working at BSVESS. She knows how important it is when a table case comes in that she has to put her undivided attention in order to make sure that animal is getting life-saving support and treatment. She also enjoys monitoring anesthesia during surgery whether it is a stable orthopedic versus an overnight emergency surgery when time is of the essence. Being a Tech Assistant Manager is helping her leadership skills develop so she can be a better support system. She finds it rewarding to teach our Tech Assistants, educate them, and advance their careers through training. She most recently went through training to become RECOVER Rescuer Certified! Rebecca has two dogs, a Chihuahua Little Man, a Husky Kiki, a bunny Robert Downy Jr, and one fish Derp. Rebecca loves to go to the beach and on hikes with friends. Rebecca grew up in Rhode Island and then ended up falling in love with southern Massachusetts! #bsvess #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #massachusetts #tech #cvt #training #newengland #er #icu #criticalcare #savinglives #veterinaryspecialists

Say hello to Pants and Ariel. They are two of our blood donors at BSVESS! Pants is a 5-year-old Black Lab, and Ariel is a 7-year-old Lab mix. They have helped to save many lives over the years! When they are not helping to save lives, Pants loves playing fetch and giving kisses, and Ariel loves snuggles and taking extra long naps! Just like in a human hospital, as an emergency veterinary hospital, we constantly need blood products to treat life-saving conditions in dogs and cats. BSVESS and @oceanstatevetspecialists depend on the generosity and cooperation of donors like Pants and Ariel and their owners – who truly are the heroes, ensuring that we have life-saving blood components available at all times. If you are interested in learning more about our Blood Bank, to see if your dog can be a hero just like Pants and Ariel, check out our sister hospitals page: osvs.net/blood-bank/ #bloodbank #savinglives #bsvess #osvs #massachusetts #baystateveterinaryemergencyspecialtyservices #oceanstateveterinaryspecialists #er #icu #bloodtransfusion #blooddonor #care #rhodeisland #newengland
