Ailing in body and healthy in mind The householder Nakulapitā asks the Buddha for help in coping with old age. The Buddha says to reflect: “Even though I am afflicted in body, my mind will be unafflicted.” Later Sāriputta explains this in terms of the five aggregates. While this teaching is about the old age, the same can be applied for during physical tiredness, illness, or bodily pain. The Buddha's key teachings break down the intangible idea of a "self" into tangible annotations of form, feeling, perceptions, choices and consciousness. “Sir, I’m an old man, elderly and senior. I’m advanced in years and have reached the final stage of life. My body is ailing and I’m constantly unwell. I hardly ever get to see the esteemed mendicants. May the Buddha please advise me and instruct me. It will be for my lasting welfare and happiness.” “That’s so true, householder! That’s so true, householder! For this body is ailing, trapped in its shell. If anyone dragging around this body claimed to be healthy even for a minute, what is that but foolishness? So you should train like this: ‘Though my body is ailing, my mind will be healthy.’ That’s how you should train.” And then the householder Nakula’s father approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right. Then he went up to Venerable Sāriputta, bowed, and sat down to one side. Sāriputta said to him: “Householder, your faculties are so very clear, and your complexion is pure and bright. Did you get to hear a Dhamma talk in the Buddha’s presence today?” “What else, sir, could it possibly be? Just now the Buddha anointed me with the deathless ambrosia of a Dhamma talk.” “But what kind of ambrosial Dhamma talk has the Buddha anointed you with?” So Nakula’s father told Sāriputta all that had happened, and said, “That’s the ambrosial Dhamma talk that the Buddha anointed me with.” “But didn’t you feel the need to ask the Buddha the further question: ‘Sir, how do you define someone ailing in body and ailing in mind, and someone ailing in body and healthy in mind’?”... - SN 22.1 #buddha #saṃyuttanikāya #palicanon #buddhawords

Two New Publications | The Dhāraṇī “Surūpa” and The Dhāraṇī “Purifying All Karmic Obscurations” Both Dhāraṇīs are short yet important. The Dhāraṇī “Surūpa” is used while making a food offering to hungry spirits. The ritual is outlined in simple terms, and followed by a description of its benefits. The Dhāraṇī “Purifying All Karmic Obscurations” provides many teachings to aid the dead toward a favorable rebirth. The text offers glimpses into the types of practices Buddhist communities in India and Tibet undertook when dealing with a situation that affects us all: the death of a loved one. The Buddha's Advise On Two Kinds of Thoughts (MN 19) and Efforts (AN 4.69) The Buddha shares the inclination of the mind is directed towards what one frequently thinks and ponders upon. “Bhikkhus, whatever a bhikkhu frequently thinks and ponders upon, that will become the inclination of his mind. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon thoughts of sensual desire, he has abandoned the thought of renunciation to cultivate the thought of sensual desire, and then his mind inclines to thoughts of sensual desire. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon thoughts of ill will…upon thoughts of cruelty, he has abandoned the thought of non-cruelty to cultivate the thought of cruelty, and then his mind inclines to thoughts of cruelty. He then shares how during his quest for enlightenment, before he was enlightened, he classified his thoughts into two categories: “Bhikkhus, before my enlightenment, while I was still only an unenlightened Bodhisatta, it occurred to me: ‘Suppose that I divide my thoughts into two classes. Then I set on one side thoughts of sensual desire, thoughts of ill will, and thoughts of cruelty, and I set on the other side thoughts of renunciation, thoughts of non-ill will, and thoughts of non-cruelty. Wholesome Thoughts: These include thoughts of renunciation, non-ill will (such as loving-kindness), and non-harming (compassion). Such thoughts lead to peace, insight, enlightenment, and Nibbana. Unwholesome Thoughts: These are thoughts of sensual desire, ill will, and harming. Such thoughts lead to attachment, aversion, delusion, and increase suffering or discontentment. The Buddha shares the details on the application of the four right efforts to do this effectively: Effort to Prevent: Reflect on the unwholesome thoughts to see if the underlying cause stems from doing a certain activity or an action that is potentially harm producing, rooted in craving, or attachment. Make an effort to prevent such actions, activities, speech, and intention. This is the effort to prevent. Effort to Abandon: When an unwholesome thought arises: of letting go, of non-ill will and of non-harm... - MN 19, AN 4.69 #buddhawords #majjhimanikāya #aṅguttaranikāya

This teaching lays out the path to liberation with visual similes. Mendicants, people label you as ascetics. And when they ask you what you are, you claim to be ascetics. Given this label and this claim, you should train like this: ‘We will undertake and follow the things that make one an ascetic and a brahmin. That way our label will be accurate and our claim correct. Any robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick that we use will be very fruitful and beneficial for the donor. And our going forth will not be wasted, but will be fruitful and fertile.’ And what are the things that make one an ascetic and a brahmin? You should train like this: ‘We will have conscience and prudence.’.. What more is there to do? You should train like this: ‘Our bodily behavior will be pure, clear, open, neither inconsistent nor secretive.... ‘Our verbal behavior … mental behavior … livelihood will be pure, clear, open, neither inconsistent nor secretive. And we won’t glorify ourselves or put others down on account of our pure livelihood.’... We will restrain our sense doors. When we see a sight with our eyes, we won’t get caught up in the features and details... We will not eat too much. We will only eat after reflecting rationally on our food. We will eat not for fun... We will be dedicated to wakefulness. When practicing walking and sitting meditation by day, we will purify our mind from obstacles. In the evening, we will continue to practice walking and sitting meditation. In the middle of the night, we will lie down in the lion’s posture... We will have situational awareness and mindfulness... After the meal, they return from almsround, sit down cross-legged, set their body straight, and establish mindfulness in front of them. Giving up covetousness for the world, they meditate with a heart rid of covetousness, cleansing the mind of covetousness. Giving up ill will and malevolence, they meditate with a mind rid of ill will, full of compassion for all living beings.. - Majjhima Nikaya 39 #buddha #majjhimanikāya #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday #dhammateaching #palicanon #truewisdom #innerwisdom

The Abandoning of Thoughts Related to Desire, Hate and Delusion (MN 20) Mendicants, a mendicant committed to the higher mind should focus on five subjects. 1. Take a mendicant who is focusing on some subject that gives rise to bad, unskillful thoughts connected with desire, hate, and delusion. That mendicant should focus on some other subject connected with the skillful. As they do so, those bad thoughts are given up and come to an end. Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in samādhi. It’s like a deft carpenter or their apprentice who’d knock out or extract a large peg with a finer peg. In the same way, a mendicant … should focus on some other foundation of meditation connected with the skillful … Now, suppose that mendicant is focusing on some other subject connected with the skillful, but bad, unskillful thoughts connected with desire, hate, and delusion keep coming up. 2. They should examine the drawbacks of those thoughts: ‘So these thoughts are unskillful, they’re blameworthy, and they result in suffering.’.. Suppose there was a woman or man who was young, youthful, and fond of adornments. If the carcass of a snake or a dog or a human were hung around their neck, they’d be horrified, repelled, and disgusted. In the same way, a mendicant … should examine the drawbacks of those thoughts… 3. They should try to forget and ignore about them... Suppose there was a person with clear eyes, and some undesirable sights came into their range of vision. They’d just close their eyes or look away. 4. They should focus on stopping the formation of thoughts... Suppose there was a person walking quickly. They’d think: ‘Why am I walking so quickly? Why don’t I slow down?’ So they’d slow down... 5. With teeth clenched and tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth, they should squeeze, squash, and crush mind with mind... It’s like a strong man who grabs a weaker man by the head or throat or shoulder and squeezes, squashes, and crushes them...

Clinging to sensual pleasures (Ud 7.3) Thus have I heard—once, the Blessed One was staying in Savatthi, at Jetavana, Anathapindika's monastery. At that time, the majority of people in Savatthi were overly attached to sensual pleasures, engrossed, greedy, entangled, infatuated, and immersed in them, behaving as if drunk and insane. Then, several monks, after dressing in the morning and taking their bowls and robes, entered Savatthi for alms. After wandering for alms in Savatthi and after their meal, they approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat on one side. Seated there, those monks said to the Blessed One: “Here, venerable sir, the people of Savatthi are mostly overly attached to sensual pleasures, engrossed, greedy, entangled, infatuated, and immersed in them.” Knowing the situation, the Blessed One then uttered this exclamation: "Bound to pleasures, entangled in sensual pleasure, Not seeing the danger in attachments; Indeed, those bound to the attachment, to entanglement, Would not cross over the vast, great flood." - Udana #buddha #buddhateachings #udanasutta #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday #dhammateaching #palicanon #truewisdom

Four Ways to Arahantship (AN 4.170) 1. Tranquility precedes insight 2. Insight precedes tranquility 3. Tranquility and insight are developed in tandem 4. Restless eventually leads to stillness, unification, concentration, frequent practice --- There, the venerable Ānanda addressed the monks: "Friends, monks." "Friend," those monks responded to the venerable Ānanda. The venerable Ānanda said: "Indeed, friends, whether it is a monk or a nun who declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence, all do so by one of four paths, or by some among them. Which four? Here, friends, a monk develops insight preceded by tranquility. As one develops insight preceded by tranquility, the path arises. One practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path. As one practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path, fetters are abandoned, underlying tendencies are eradicated. Again, friends, a monk develops tranquility preceded by insight. As one develops tranquility preceded by insight, the path arises. One practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path. As one practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path, fetters are abandoned, underlying tendencies are eradicated. Again, friends, a monk develops tranquility and insight in tandem. As one develops tranquility and insight in tandem, the path arises. One practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path. As one practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path, fetters are abandoned, underlying tendencies are eradicated. Again, friends, at times a monk's mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Dhamma. There comes a time, friends, when that mind settles internally, rests, becomes unified, and concentrates. The path arises for them. One practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path. As one practices, develops, and frequently cultivates that path, fetters are abandoned, underlying tendencies are eradicated. Five Reflections To Allay Resentment (AN 5.161) "Monks, these are the five methods for completely allaying resentment when it arises in a monk. What five? Monks, in whom resentment arises towards any person, loving-kindness should be cultivated towards that person; thus, resentment towards that person should be removed. Monks, in whom resentment arises towards any person, compassion should be cultivated towards that person; thus, resentment towards that person should be removed. Monks, in whom resentment arises towards any person, equanimity should be cultivated towards that person; thus, resentment towards that person should be removed. Monks, in whom resentment arises towards any person, one should not pay attention to that person; thus, resentment towards that person should be removed. Monks, in whom resentment arises towards any person, one should establish the perception of ownership of kamma towards that person: 'This venerable one is the owner of their actions, heir to their actions, born of their actions, related through their actions, and has their actions as their refuge. Whatever actions they do, whether good or bad, they will be the heir to them'; thus, resentment towards that person should be removed. These, monks, are the five methods for completely allaying resentment when it arises." - AN 5.161 --- A practice of loving-kindness, when gradually cultivated leads to uprooting of the fetter of ill-will from the mind. Suppose a carpenter or their apprentice sees the marks of his fingers and thumb on the handle of his adze. They don’t know how much of the handle was worn away today, how much yesterday, and how much previously. They just know what has been worn away. -- SN 22.101 The Buddha shares that one may not know how much of a fetter is remaining to be uprooted from the mind, it is only by its complete disappearance can one know this. The way of progress may be observed as a gradual one by observing for the gradual improvements in the condition of the mind... #buddha #buddhateachings #aṅguttaranikāya #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday #dhammateaching #palicanon #truewisdom

Understanding each thing and its cause (Ud 1.1) The Buddha, soon after awakening, contemplates specific conditionality and dependent co-arising. So I have heard. At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in Uruvelā at the root of the tree of awakening on the bank of the Nerañjarā River. There the Buddha sat cross-legged for seven days without moving, experiencing the bliss of freedom. When seven days had passed, the Buddha emerged from that state of immersion. In the first part of the night, he carefully applied the mind to dependent origination in forward order: “When this exists, that is; due to the arising of this, that arises. That is: Ignorance is a condition for choices. Choices are a condition for consciousness. Consciousness is a condition for name and form. Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields. The six sense fields are conditions for contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. Craving is a condition for grasping. Grasping is a condition for continued existence. Continued existence is a condition for rebirth. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.” Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment: “When things become clear to the keen, meditating brahmin, his doubts are dispelled, since he understands each thing and its cause.” - Ud 1.1 #buddha #buddhateachings #udanasutta #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday #dhammateaching #palicanon #truewisdom

Four Kinds of Persons Ask for help: When one has cultivated tranquility but not insight, or insight but not tranquility, or have cultivated neither, should ask for advice from someone who has cultivated both. One who has cultivated both should practice for ending of fetters. --- Monks, concerning the individual who gains internal serenity of mind but does not gain insight into phenomena through higher wisdom, that person should approach the one who gains insight into phenomena through higher wisdom and ask, 'Friend, how should conditioned phenomena be seen? How should conditioned phenomena be comprehended? How should conditioned phenomena be insightfully penetrated?' The other explains as they have seen and understood: 'Friend, conditioned phenomena should be seen in this way, comprehended in this way, insightfully penetrated in this way.' Eventually, they too gain both internal serenity of mind and insight into phenomena through higher wisdom. Monks, concerning the individual who gains insight into phenomena through higher wisdom but does not gain internal serenity of mind, that person should approach the one who gains internal serenity of mind and ask, 'Friend, how should the mind be steadied? How should the mind be settled? How should the mind be unified? How should the mind be concentrated?' The other explains as they have seen and understood: 'Friend, the mind should be steadied in this way, settled in this way, unified in this way, concentrated in this way.' Eventually, they too gain both insight into phenomena through higher wisdom and internal serenity of mind. Monks, concerning the individual who neither gains internal serenity of mind nor gains insight into phenomena through higher wisdom, that person should approach... Monks, concerning the individual who gains both internal serenity of mind and insight into phenomena through higher wisdom, that person, standing on those wholesome qualities, should undertake the practice for the destruction of the taints. Suppose there was a bowl of water that was mixed with dye such as red lac, turmeric, indigo, or rose madder. Even a person with clear eyes checking their own reflection wouldn’t truly know it or see it. In the same way, when your heart is overcome and mired in sensual desire … Suppose there was a bowl of water that was heated by fire, boiling and bubbling. Even a person with clear eyes checking their own reflection wouldn’t truly know it or see it. In the same way, when your heart is overcome and mired in ill will … Suppose there was a bowl of water overgrown with moss and aquatic plants. Even a person with clear eyes checking their own reflection wouldn’t truly know it or see it. In the same way, when your heart is overcome and mired in dullness and drowsiness … Suppose there was a bowl of water stirred by the wind, churning, swirling, and rippling. Even a person with clear eyes checking their own reflection wouldn’t truly know it or see it. In the same way, when your heart is overcome and mired in restlessness and remorse … Suppose there was a bowl of water that was cloudy, murky, and muddy, hidden in the darkness. Even a person with clear eyes checking their own reflection wouldn’t truly know it or see it. In the same way, there’s a time when your heart is overcome and mired in doubt ... These seven awakening factors are not obstacles, hindrances, or corruptions of the mind. When developed and cultivated they lead to the realization of the fruit of knowledge and freedom. What seven? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity. - SN 46.55 #buddha #buddhateachings #samyuttanikaya #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday #dhammateaching #palicanon #truewisdom

New Publication | The Mārīcī Dhāraṇī This text opens at Prince Jeta’s Grove in Śrāvastī, where the Buddha Śākyamuni introduces a saṅgha of monks and bodhisattvas to the goddess Mārīcī by listing her unique qualities and powers. The Buddha then teaches the saṅgha six dhāraṇī mantras related to the goddess Mārīcī. We are fortunate that a relatively large number of Sanskrit witnesses of The Mārīcī Dhāraṇī have survived. The Fading Away of Lust (SN 45.41-48) If others ask why you follow the spiritual path, say it’s for the fading away for lust, for giving up fetters, for final extinguishment without anything left over. --- At Sāvatthī. “Mendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you: ‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’ You should answer them like this: ‘The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is the fading away of greed.’ If wanderers of other religions were to ask you: ‘Is there a path and a practice for the fading away of greed?’ You should answer them like this: ‘There is a path and a practice for the fading away of greed.’ And what is that path, what is that practice for the fading away of greed? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This is the path, this is the practice for the fading away of greed. When questioned by wanderers of other religions, that’s how you should answer them.” -- SN 45.41 --- “Mendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you: ‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’ You should answer them like this: ‘The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to give up the fetters.’ … ‘… to uproot the underlying tendencies.’ … ‘… to completely understand the course of time.’ … * ‘… to end the defilements.’ … ‘… to realize the fruit of knowledge and freedom.’ … ‘… for knowledge and vision.’ …” -- SN 45.42-47 --- At Sāvatthī. “Mendicants, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you: ‘Reverends, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’ You should answer them like this: ‘The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is extinguishment by not grasping.’ If wanderers of other religions were to ask you: ‘Is there a path?... Authored by the Degé Kangyur’s main editor Situ Paṇchen Chökyi Jungné at the conclusion of the five-year project in 1733, it is a document rich in historical detail. Much more than just a table of contents, what is known as the Degé Kangyur Catalog takes up the entirety of the 103rd and final volume of the Kangyur. It is presented in five chapters. The first three give a detailed history of Indian Buddhism, its arrival in Tibet, and the production of the Degé Kangyur, while the final two constitute the catalog itself, in which all the texts included in the canon are listed, and the merits of producing a Kangyur are extolled. https://loom.ly/vCRsMZM [LINKINBIO] | ⏰: ~ 40mins #HaveYouReadASutraYet #Sutras #Buddha #Buddhism #WordsoftheBuddha #BuddhaWords #Dharma #Dhamma #WisdomHeritage #CulturalHeritage #LiteraryHeritage #History #Education #TechnologyForPreservation #TranslationForPreservation #Translate8400 #Preservation #Kangyur #TibetanBuddhism #WellBeing #SaveWisdomNow

The Heartwood of the Spiritual Life (MN 29) The Buddha shares a teaching on the true goal of the spiritual life, the heartwood of it as the irreversible freedom. He cautions against getting into negligence after achieving other attainments with visual similes. --- ...Take a gentleman who has gone forth from the lay life to homelessness, thinking, ‘I’m swamped by rebirth, old age, and death; by sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. I’m swamped by suffering, mired in suffering. Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.’ When they’ve gone forth they generate possessions, honor, and popularity. They’re not happy with that, and haven’t got all they wished for. They don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence on account of those possessions, honor, and popularity. Being diligent, they achieve accomplishment in ethics. They’re happy with that, but they haven’t got all they wished for. They don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that accomplishment in ethics. Being diligent, they achieve immersion. They’re happy with that, but they haven’t got all they wished for. They don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that accomplishment in immersion. Being diligent, they achieve knowledge and vision. They’re happy with that, but they haven’t got all they wished for. They don’t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that knowledge and vision. Being diligent, they achieve irreversible freedom. And it’s impossible for that mendicant to fall away from that irreversible freedom... - Majjhima Nikaya 29 #buddha #majjimanikāya #buddhawords #dhammateaching #palicanon #buddhaquoteoftheday #truewisdom

The Divine Messengers (AN 3.36) “There are, mendicants, these three messengers of the gods. What three? Firstly, someone does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. Then the wardens of hell take them by the arms and present them to King Yama, saying: ‘Your Majesty, this person did not pay due respect to their mother and father, ascetics and brahmins, or honor the elders in the family. May Your Majesty punish them!’ Then King Yama pursues, presses, and grills them about the first messenger of the gods: ‘Mister, did you not see the first messenger of the gods that appeared among human beings?’ They say, ‘I saw nothing, sir.’ First messenger: Then King Yama says, ‘Mister, did you not see among human beings an elderly woman or a man—eighty, ninety, or a hundred years old—bent double, crooked, leaning on a staff, trembling as they walk, ailing, past their prime, with teeth broken, hair grey and scanty or bald, skin wrinkled, and limbs blotchy?’ They say, ‘I saw that, sir.’ Then King Yama says, ‘Mister, did it not occur to you—being sensible and mature—“I, too, am liable to grow old. I’m not exempt from old age. I’d better do good by way of body, speech, and mind”?’ They say, ‘I couldn’t, sir. I was negligent.’ Then King Yama says, ‘Mister, because you were negligent, you didn’t do good by way of body, speech, and mind. Indeed, they’ll definitely punish you to fit your negligence. That bad deed wasn’t done by your mother, father... That bad deed was done by you alone, and you alone will experience the result.’ Second messenger : Then King Yama says, ‘Mister, did you not see among human beings a woman or a man, sick, suffering, gravely ill, collapsed in their own urine and feces, being picked up by some and put down by others?’ Third messenger : Then King Yama says, ‘Mister, did you not see among human beings a woman or a man, dead for one, two, or three days, bloated, livid, and festering?’ - AN 3.36 #buddha #anguttaranikaya #buddhawords #dhammateaching #palicanon #buddhaquoteoftheday #truewisdom

The path naturally flows for an ethical person An ethical person, devoid of regrets, experiences joy, which leads to rapture, subsequently fostering tranquility and bliss. This state immerses one in samādhi, facilitating true understanding and perception, leading to disillusionment and dispassion. Through this process, one attains the knowledge and vision of freedom. --- “Mendicants, an ethical person, who has fulfilled ethical conduct, need not make a wish: ‘May I have no regrets!’ It’s only natural that an ethical person has no regrets. When you have no regrets you need not make a wish: ‘May I feel joy!’ It’s only natural that joy springs up when you have no regrets. When you feel joy you need not make a wish: ‘May I experience rapture!’ It’s only natural that rapture arises when you’re joyful. When your mind is full of rapture you need not make a wish: ‘May my body become tranquil!’ It’s only natural that your body becomes tranquil when your mind is full of rapture. When your body is tranquil you need not make a wish: ‘May I feel bliss!’ It’s only natural to feel bliss when your body is tranquil. New Publication | The Accomplishment of the Sets of Four Qualities: The Bodhisattvas’ Prātimokṣa This is a sūtra significant for its wide-ranging discussion of the various attitudes, deeds, pursuits, and insights that constitute the practical discipline‍—the prātimokṣa‍—engaged in by bodhisattvas. The sūtra presents a dialogue between Śāriputra and the Buddha Śākyamuni at Vulture Peak near Rājagṛha, the capital of the former kingdom of Magadha (present-day Bihar). Śāriputra opens the conversation by asking the Buddha, “What are the deeds related to the aspects of the bodhisattvas’ truth?” The Buddha responds by expounding on a wide variety of qualities that bodhisattvas cultivate on their journey to awakening. These include, but are not limited to, expositions on the importance of generosity and diligence. The qualities are generally presented in groups of four and relate to vastly different themes. https://loom.ly/hCfSc7w [LINKINBIO] | ⏰: ~35 mins #HaveYouReadASutraYet #Sutras #Buddha #Buddhism #WordsoftheBuddha #BuddhaWords #Dharma #Dhamma #WisdomHeritage #CulturalHeritage #LiteraryHeritage #History #Education #TechnologyForPreservation #TranslationForPreservation #Translate8400 #Preservation #Kangyur #TibetanBuddhism #WellBeing #SaveWisdomNow

The realization of three true knowledges In a less confrontational meeting, the Buddha and Saccaka discuss the difference between physical and mental development. The Buddha gives a long account of the various practices he did before awakening. In this teaching, the Buddha gives a useful simile of the sappy log for the mind. 1. A sappy log in water is a simile for a mind filled with desire and living with sensual desires. The Buddha compares this to practitioners that live unrestrained in mind and body. 2. A sappy log in dry land is a simile for a mind that's not internally quieted, filled with desires, but staying in an environment that is not filled with desires The Buddha compares this to practitioners that live restrained in body but not in mind. 3. A dry log in dry land can be used to make fire. In the same way, there are ascetics and brahmins who live withdrawn in body and mind from sensual pleasures. And they have internally given up and stilled desire, affection, infatuation, thirst, and passion for sensual pleasures. - Majjhima Nikaya 36 #majjhimanikaya #buddha #buddhateachings #dhamma #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday

Importance of cultivating wisdom (AN 1.76 - 1.81) “Loss of relatives, mendicants, is a small thing. Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.” - AN 1.76 “Growth of relatives, mendicants, is a small thing. Wisdom is the best thing to grow. So you should train like this: ‘We will grow in wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.” - AN 1.77 “Loss of wealth, mendicants, is a small thing. Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.” - AN 1.78 “Growth of wealth, mendicants, is a small thing. Wisdom is the best thing to grow. So you should train like this: ‘We will grow in wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.” - AN 1.79 “Loss of fame, mendicants, is a small thing. Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.” - AN 1.80 “Growth of fame, mendicants, is a small thing. Wisdom is the best thing to grow. So you should train like this: ‘We will grow in wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.” - AN 1.81 ---- The Buddha is sharing the importance of cultivating wisdom (discernment) by contrasting it against the worldly conditions of fame, wealth, and relatives. The Buddha shares a variety of teachings that touch the same underlying four noble truths while allowing for a deeper reflection on the mind's relation to the five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, intention (choices), consciousness. One is awakening to the truth of enlightenment by gradually letting go of the grasping at the five aggregates and instead cultivating wisdom of the natural law of cause and effect (kamma) and operating in the world based on this cultivated wisdom. #buddha #buddhateachings #anguttaranikaya #buddhameditation #meditationquotes #buddhawords #buddhaquote #buddhaquoteoftheday
