When my husband and I were dating neither one of us gave a thought about our Faith life. I was the mad Protestant who had turned her back on God and Dustin was a cradle Catholic that lived right across the street from the Catholic Church on campus, but never went. The day our oldest was born, my husband said that when he held her in his arms, he knew that he needed to be better for her. He’ll tell you that he started looking around at men in his life that seemed to shine and thrive. He found two: His grandfather and my pastor from the church I grew up in. He looked at their lives and thought, “What is it about them that makes them seem content, joyful, and…even…holy? I want that.” My husband realized pretty quickly that they were deeply connected to the True Vine and because they were so connected, they bore much fruit. This started my husband and I on a journey back to our Faith and ultimately led me into the Catholic Church. You will wither without Christ, Catholic Pilgrims. Remain connected to the True Vine at all costs. When you do, others will see the difference in you and want what you have, and what you have is Christ. Today we celebrate the feast day of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla and remember this day as the day she died in 1962. This modern day saint is a beautiful witness of love and sacrifice in a world that so desperately needs to know and experience true love. Saint Gianna was an Italian physician and a devoted wife and mother. While pregnant with her fourth child, she developed a life-threatening complication. In order to save her life, doctors recommended that she have an abortion, but St. Gianna refused, insisting that doctors save the baby’s life instead. She gave birth to her daughter on April 21, 1962, and died seven days later. She was canonized in 2004, and her husband and daughter attended the canonization ceremony. She is the patron saint of mothers, physicians, and preborn children. In honor of St. Gianna’s feast day, here are five of her most inspirational quotes: “Love and sacrifice are closely linked, like the sun and the light. Saint Gianna Molla, ora pro nobis!! + Tenth of thirteen children born to Alberto and Maria Beretta October 4, 1922, she was a pious girl raised in a pious family; one sister became a nun, and two brothers, including Enrico Beretta became priests. While in college, she worked with the poor and elderly, and joined the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. She was a physician and surgeon, graduating from the University of Pavia in 1949, she started a clinic in Mero, Italy in 1950. She returned to school and studied pediatrics, and after finishing in 1952 she worked especially with mothers, babies, the elderly, and the poor. Active in Catholic Action, and a avid skier. She considered a call to religious life, but was married to Pietro Molla on 24 September 1955 at Magenta. Mother of three, she continued her medical career, treating it as a mission and gift from God. During her pregnancy with her fourth child, she was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. Her surgeon recommended an abortion in order to save Gianna’s life; she refused and died a week after childbirth, April 28, 1962, caring more for doing right by her unborn child than for her own life. Saint Louis de Montfort, ora pro nobis!! + Confessor, Marian devotee, and founder of the Sisters of Divine Wisdom, he was born Louis Maie Grignon in Montfort, France, in 1673. Educated at Rennes, he was ordained there in 1700, becoming a chaplain in a hospital in Poitiers. His congregation, also called the Daughters of Divine Wisdom, started there. As his missions and sermons raised complaints, Louis went to Rome, where Pope Clement XI appointed him as a missionary apostolic. Louis is famous for fostering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary. In 1715, he also founded the Missionaries of the Company of Mary. His True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin remains popular. Louis died at Saint-Laurent-sur-Sevre. Today is also the Memorial of St. Gianna Molla Patron Saint of Mothers, Physicians, and Unborn Children St. Gianna Beretta Molla was an Italian pediatrician from the 20th Century. She followed Catholic Church teaching, both in her professional and personal life. During her fourth pregnancy, she refused an abortion and a hysterectomy, in order to save her unborn child's life at the cost of her own. Gianna made this decision in accordance with Church teaching and with the sense of protecting her unborn child's life. While she delivered her fourth child on Holy Saturday of 1961, Gianna would die a week later. She is a model of Catholic marriage, and a patron saint of mothers and physicians. Today is also the Memorial of Saint Peter Chanel, Priest and Martyr Patron Saint of Oceania Anyone who has worked in loneliness, with great adaptation required and with little apparent success, will find a kindred spirit in Peter Chanel. Born in France, Peter’s interest in the missions began in school, when he read letters missionaries to America sent back home. As a young priest, Peter revived a parish in a “bad” district by the simple method of showing great devotion to the sick. Wanting to be a missionary, he joined the Society of Mary, the Marists, at 28. Obediently, he taught in the seminary for five years. Then, as superior of seven Marists, he traveled to Western Oceania. The bishop accompanying the missionaries left Peter and a brother on Futuna Island northeast of Fiji, promising to return in six months. He was gone five years. Meanwhile, Peter struggled with this new language and mastered it, making the difficult adjustment to life with whalers, traders, and warring natives. Despite little apparent success and severe want, he maintained a serene and gentle spirit, plus endless patience and courage. A few natives had been baptized, a few more were being instructed. When the chieftain’s son asked to be baptized, persecution by the chieftain reached a climax. Father Chanel was clubbed to death. Within two years after his death, the whole island became Catholic and has remained so. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954. Peter Chanel is the first martyr of Oceania and its patron. Happy Sunday! Today's Gospel reading reminds us that without God's nourishment and pruning things get messy. As long as we (the branches) remain attached to the vine (Jesus), we have everything we need and the ability to create beautiful things through Christ. Just like it's easy for me to let the house get cluttered, it's easy to make a mess of my branches when I'm not focused on pruning and growth (the kind God wants from me, His will & not mine). My daily sins separate me from the vine. These things help me with pruning and staying attached as much as possible: the daily scriptures, attending Mass, Reconciliation, Bible study, the Eucharist, prayer, Adoration, and fellowship with others who love Jesus. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” - John 15:5 If you leave a plant out of the ground, it will eventually with and die for lack of nutrients. A fruit tree will bear more fruit if it receives all the sun, water, and fertilizer it needs. And so it is true for us: we need God to complete our hearts. We can go through life without Him, but we are more with Him. God is the perfect gardener. He prunes where we need it most and helps us grow in the places he has created for us. All it takes is for us to surrender to Him. Honestly, life is so much easier when we don’t fight, kick and claw our way through it. You may think that you need to take a firm stand and be bold in who you are. But aren’t you tired of the constant struggle against the world? God is calling us all to return to Him and leave the battlefield we’ve made of life. He is the true vine and we are the branches. Today is the Memorial of Saint Louis Grignion de Montfort, Priest Patron Saint of preachers St. Louis de Montfort, known as the "good father from Monfort" was a French priest devoted to preaching about the rosary and devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He spent some time writing both spiritual works or poetry. In addition to his preaching and writing, he also founded three religious congregations; the Company of Mary, the Daughters of Wisdom, and the Brothers of Saint Gabriel. His legacy could still be felt today with Pope St. John Paul II ecclesiastical motto being based on the teachings of St. Louis. St. Gianna Molla. The 20th century pro-life Saint whose witness to life we need so much today. A Catholic wife, mother, and pediatrician. She loved hiking in the mountains, skiing, art, fashion, attending operas with her husband. Most of all she loved taking care of her little family, playing with her children in the backyard, and volunteering at her church. Pregnant with her fourth baby and diagnosed with a tumor, she rejected a doctors recommendation to have an abortion. Instead, she chose the life of her unborn child, and gave birth to healthy baby girl several months later, who is still alive today. She passed away a few weeks later. Our home feels more relaxed; we're finding our own little rhythms; Susanna is enjoying learning again, and is thriving on the freedom of expression found in home education. But honestly, the best part about these past few weeks has been seeing the friendship that is developing between these two. Susanna has always been a wonderful big sister to Violet, but being surrounded by children of her own age all day every day definitely had an impact on the way they interacted. Honestly, I can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is that has changed, lots of little subtleties, I suppose, as they are allowed the time to truly get to know each other and learn to navigate their relationship, but the 'lots of littles' are amounting to some big changes. It truly is such a joy and a privilege to be able to watch them flourish 💕

#SaintoftheDay St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673 – 1716) was born in Brittany, France, to a large farming family. As a child he displayed an unusual spiritual maturity and spent much time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. At the age of 19 he went on foot to Paris to study theology at a prestigious school with the support of a benefactor; along the way he gave his possessions to the poor and made a lifelong vow to live in poverty supported entirely on alms. He was ordained a priest at the age of 27, and at 32 discovered his calling to be an itinerant preacher, receiving the title of "Apostolic Missionary" from the Pope after his bishop tried to silence him. For the next 17 years he preached missions in countless towns and villages throughout France with an emphasis on renewal and reform. His fiery devotion, oratory skill, and identification with the poor led many souls to conversion. He was persecuted by the Jansenists, who, in their spiritual pride, poisoned him, banished him from preaching in their dioceses, and made an assassination attempt on his life. He had a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and taught on the power of the Holy Rosary. He also wrote a number of classic works on Marian devotion, the most famous being True Devotion to Mary.
