07 May | Saint Rose Venerini Rose was born at Viterbo in Italy, the daughter of a doctor. Following the death of her fiancé she entered a convent, but soon returned home to care for her newly widowed mother. Meanwhile, Rose invited the women of the neighborhood to recite the rosary in her home, forming a sort of sodality with them. As she looked to her future under the spiritual guidance of a Jesuit priest, Rose became convinced that she was called to become a teacher in the world rather than a contemplative nun in a convent. Clearly, she made the right choice: She was a born teacher, and the free school for girls she opened in 1685 was well received. Soon the cardinal invited her to oversee the training of teachers and the administration of schools in his diocese of Montefiascone. As Rose’s reputation grew, she was called upon to organize schools in many parts of Italy, including Rome. Her disposition was right for the task as well, for Rose often met considerable opposition but was never deterred. She died in Rome in 1728, where a number of miracles were attributed to her. She was beatified in 1952 and canonized in 2006. The sodality, or group of women she had invited to prayer, was ultimately given the rank of a religious congregation. #RecommendedBooks "By the grace of God I am a Christian man, by my own actions a great sinner, and by calling a homeless wanderer of the humblest origins, roaming from place to place". These are the words with which The Way of a Pilgrim, a work written in the 19th century that can be of great help to us in our spiritual "journey", begins. It is the story of a man who, after hearing St. Paul's exhortation in the First Epistle to the Thessalonians to "pray without ceasing", sets out to find out how it is possible to live in continuous prayer, despite the activities and hustle and bustle of life. Thus, he becomes a pilgrim and sets out to find people of faith who can instruct him in prayer and contemplation. Thus he meets an elderly monk, who becomes a mentor in the interior life: "Many people treat prayer in an inverted way, thinking that it is one’s efforts and the preparatory steps that give rise to prayer, rather than the prayer itself giving birth to good works and all the virtues. In this case, they mistakenly see the fruits and resulting benefits of prayer as the means to its end, thereby denigrating the very power of prayer". In addition to giving the protagonist the Philokalia, a complete and detailed description of continuous interior prayer by some of the Holy Fathers, the monk gives him some words with which to pray at all times, a prayer that will accompany the protagonist throughout the rest of the story (this is only the first of seven chapters of great benefit to our souls): "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me!". For the monk, "If one makes a habit of this supplication, one will experience great comfort and a need to repeat this prayer unceasingly, so that eventually one will not be able to live without it and the prayer will flow of its own Accord".
