I’ve been slowly putting together a collection for an exhibition this summer, a few pieces exploring birdsong and the degree to which we hear it depending on what’s going on in our lives. A few weeks of poorliness allowed me to shed some mental clutter so their song became bright again. This week brings more exciting news to share as I am absolutely over the moon to be showing this extra large moon jar and two others as part of the @cavalierofinn gallery's 20 year anniversary show. The gallery was established by Juliana Cavaliero and Debra Finn 20 years ago, curating an ever exciting and inspirational selection of paintings and craft. Their first ever show was part of the @dulwichfestival @artistsopenhse event 20 years ago, and their anniversary will also be part of the festival as well as @londoncraftweek. The exhibition will be their largest show to date, hosted @stock.wellstudio, including artists who have been part of the gallery roster since the start, and like me, artists who are showing for the first time. I have been a huge admirer of the gallery's curation and presentations at fairs for a long time, and have got to know Juliana and Debra over the years. To have my work being selected for their anniversary show is a real honour for me, and I'm incredibly excited to be working with two such talented, professional and very lovely human beings. A Sunday well spent in the studio. I loaded a full bisque firing with nearly 300 pots for different projects and already some of the pre-order cups. The next task was mixing glazes to top up all my buckets, which were quite low after the spring collection firings. - Once they are checked and tested, I’ll be able to run a set of firings to fully focus then on the making of your orders. It’s been quite a hectic week since my last post. Spent between making, helping the wonderful @blanc.ceramics with her first collection from our studio and organizing all the logistics behind the pre-order shop update. - A week of slowly going through orders, queries and messages, noting requests and arranging all those making spreadsheets that help me from loosing my mind amongst the numbers of orders and pieces. I now have it all organized and ready, so it’s back to full on making time for the coming months! - At the end of it all, there are a couple of projects involving bottles like in the first photo, but maybe slightly different. In any case, I look forward to the months ahead, the sense of focus and structure this pre-order gives me makes it easier to run the daily routines in the studio, organize myself and plan breaks or playtime. It's been so busy since @ceramicartlondon with many things to follow up and lots of lovely messages. I still feel like I haven't quite come up for air yet. Setting up this calm little group made me feel a little more peaceful though, the Pods are some of my favourite things to make as they're so earthy and organic, and the soft tones of the large moon-vase lends an air of stillness. What a weekend it's been, I'm still feeling so exhilarated and filled with utter joy from the incredible experience it was to show at @ceramicartlondon for the first time. It's a long held ambition and a bit of a dream come true to be selected. I've tried several times before, but in actual fact I think this was the right time, and I felt I was ready and up to the slightly daunting task of presenting my work to such a large audience and amongst so many makers whose work I've been admiring for years. Thank you to every single one of you who came to chat and look at my work, and to the many of you who took a piece home. It's a very special feeling when you meet the new custodians of your pieces, and they express such delight to be able to have your work in their lives, a truly humbling experience every time. It was so busy for much of the time that I felt there were many of you I didn't manage to say hello to, but it really means a lot that you all come out to see and engage with the work. A huge thank you also goes out to team @craftpotters especially Susan, Toby, Marta, Claire, Oliver and all the volunteers who made the whole event run so smoothly. And one of the most wonderful things about shows like this is the incredible support, camaraderie, humour, encouragement, hugs, laughter and all round happiness that being with the other makers brings. Just two days to go before Ceramic Art London opens with a Private View on Thursday evening, and to the public from Friday to Sunday. All my new pieces are ready, and I've spent the last two days sanding, finessing, photographing, pricing, labelling, playing around with display plans and packing them all up for safe travel to Olympia early Thursday morning. The build-up to a show like this is very intense, it's not just making the work that needs doing, there seems to be an endless list of other things to do like planning the stand furniture, layout, logistics, promotion, signage, mailing list and communication, photographing and posting work in progress images, replying to messages, organising helpers, the list goes on and on. It's weeks and months of preparation, and with the size of the opportunity comes all the expectations and pressures we put on ourselves to make the most of it too. With one day to go, I can now say I'm feeling really happy with what I've been able to make, and I think the stand build will come together (fingers crossed!) how I want it to look. I'm getting so excited to show you what I've been up to, and to see all the other amazing makers who will be there too. A good and busy Monday! I’ve been back in the studio in order to prep a good amount of clay, and to throw plates for one of my restaurant clients, who’s been very patient waiting for them. It felt good to be back into a tidy and working space after a week in between boxes, and wrapped up furniture. - As things progress in the flat, unpacking boxes, tidying up the rooms and trying to find the always slippery TV remote, I will be back in the studio to focus once again on the making. And I really can’t wait! - The remaining of the week will still be a mix of studio and flat duties, but I hope to, once the pre-order is live and I have a clear picture of the pieces to make, my mind will settle back onto the swing of things! Vintage handkerchiefs often form a starting point for my work. They may suggest a particular subject matter or colour palette and reference the domestic life of the past, creating a canvas on which to work. I enjoy the restrictions of working to a particular scale which is relevant to the domestic sewing machine used in my making. I love the variety, beauty and craftsmanship in the handkerchiefs and aim to both repurpose and respond with individuality to each. These flared cups were one of the first pieces I made when I started this journey of ceramics a few years ago now. At first handless, given my lack of skills to do them, and with time following a more refined line and proportions. - There was a time in which the base was very narrow and the handle would be large from the top to the bottom. Possibly too big. I think through time, they’ve become more myself, and I like to think they reflect the evolution of my making over the years. Where I think I’ve been able to restrain “design” features and let the objects be more simple, clean, and just what they need to be. - Many of you celebrated seeing them back on my collection last month, and as you can imagine, they’ll be available to pre-order next week.
