Waldo Wombat 30 x 40mm Acrylic Painting 🎨 Waldo was rescued from his mum’s pouch after she was hit by a car. He has since been loved and cared for by all the staff and volunteers at #portstephenskoalahospital and will soon be released. As a volunteer at PSKH, I just had to add him to my Aussie Animal collection of works. A lot of time is spent building up those layers of hair, and although tedious at times, the end result is so worth it. Waldo has grown a lot more again since I started this work…but I think I managed to capture his cheekiness in that face. ❓How do you go BIG? Start with at least a 1200dpi colour calibrated scan, use @photoshop to size at new width and height dimensions at 300dpi for print. Depending on how large you go, you may want to run your file through a program like @topazlabs AI. This is best done after the next step if your computer hasn’t got the capacity to deal with extremely large files. Edit at 1:1 on screen ratio, removing dust and imperfections (there will be a lot with large scale enlargements so put aside an hour for this step to get it right!) sharpen your image for print, adjusting colours and checking your histogram etc. @lightroom is great for refining when sharpening just hold down your option key on a Mac when adjusting the slider to select the detail on the edges to where you want it. Print on desired media using high resolution printing and pigment inks for colour stability and longevity! And “ta-da” you are done and ready to head to your local framer!! Happy Saturday! I’ve had a few questions recently asking “Where is our office?” Back in 2020, you remember THAT year? 🫣 In order to keep our printers and arsenal of equipment in top working condition we relocated them to our home. Printers should not be left idle and we like to run ours daily for premium results every time. It’s true, with three children homeschooling and a complete digital photo lab set up, there wasn’t much space left. Bedrooms were emptied and sacrificed, however we kept the business going and the children forgave me in the end 😝. 👩🏼‍🔧 • Photo Restorations • This beautiful image was in a frame without glass for many years. You can see the impact of environmental damage from not having that layer of protection. Here at Lion we offer the service of professional Photo Restorations. • What is involved? Your precious photos or documents are safely scanned with a museum grade art scanner at a high resolution of 1200dpi. Our technician then digitally repairs the photos using over 20yrs experience in photoshop to create a repaired file to be printed. The restored image is then printed on your choice of archival cotton rag or premium lustre photographic paper. No damage is done to the original article and it is returned with your completed restoration. • How long will it take? Photo Restorations take 3-4weeks on average to complete. It really depends on the extent of the job queue at the time and the severity of the restoration. We can give you an approximate time frame at the time of consultation or the following day if our digital technician isn’t in store at the time of your visit. • How much will it cost? Just like any skilled labour job, this depends on the time taken and is quoted specifically to your custom needs. High Resolution Colour calibrated scanning is between $5 for under A5 to $60 for an A1 (840mm x 594mm) depending on the size of the article. Utilising our WideTEK art scanner and its 3D capabilities, we were able to scan the original image which had been laminated at some point in its lifetime. Choosing to scan it at 1200dpi, we captured the perfect foundation to start the restoration process. It takes years of experience, hours of labour and a specific skill set to create a final image with this much detail and definition! Printed on Ilford 310gsm Smooth Cotton Rag using our flat sheet Canon Pro1000 pigment ink fine art printer. The results speak for themselves! I truly believe that when you love what you do then a little bit of magic always enhances the process and the results are amazing! This illustration was done in 1848 of the back of a family home in England. When one of the children departed to find a new life in Australia in 1856 they brought this illustration with them. Unfortunately over the years it has suffered damage from the elements. Water, insects and general wear & tear had all taken their toll on this illustration as the paper itself also aged and broke down. In the past, creating a clear image of something laminated of this size was quite the challenge. With the capabilities of our advanced equipment here in the print lab, the process has been simplified with a far superior result. We had the lovely @eviehomewood.artist consult with us last month prior to her exhibition here in Port Stephens. Evie wanted to create limited edition prints from a selection of her plein air drawings prior to them being bound into her Artist Journal by the amazing Juanita Aton @b3bookbinding @janita_ayton . After creating high resolution art scans using the colour calibrated 3D Widetec scanner, we chose a textured art paper from the Ilford Galerie Cotton Rag range and specially ordered it in for Evie’s limited edition prints. Files were set up and the Giclèe test strips were printed.
