When I was 13, I fell in love with Henry David Thoreau, who wrote, โI went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.โ As a young woman, I carried a weathered copy of Walden Pond in my purse. ๐ When I first saw my home ten years ago, I was sold by the bridge beside it, the library within it โ and the woods beneath it โ a private Walden pond of my own. โCould a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?โ And there you have it. In the words of HDT โ the miracle of empathy. I walk everyday through the woods, often alone, thinking of Thoreau and his walks through Walden Pond. In silence, I walk, wondering how I can make my life a living meditation of how to look through one anotherโs eyes. On October 8th, I am launching a project that would, I believe, make Henry David Thoreau smile. I imagine us walking in the woods, arm in arm, carrying cups of tea, musing about the miracle of empathy.
