Beginning in June, we’ll be offering set weekly classes and open hours for everyone who wants to learn, fill their bellies, and enjoy fellowship via food! I was pleased to participate today in the 38th session of the General Assembly of the Arab Organization, which was held in Riyadh, during which we discussed topics related to agriculture and biodiversity, and the exchange of experiences between Arab countries in these sectors. The #UAE continues its efforts to enhance global food security and comply with the requirements of the “National #FoodSecurity Strategy 2051.” Our nation has also placed its national food security as a top priority by raising its local food industrial capabilities, diversifying the destinations of its food imports, and working on pioneering technology-enabled experiments for the full agricultural value chain to plant the basic crops.

Sep 21: Pulling out some very late-planted tubers. Scab is a persistent issue here, so it was interesting to see that the Indigenous variety had none! Known as either ‘Makah Ozette’, ‘Haida’ or ‘Tlingit’ (last photo), this variety is thought to be one of the first potatoes stewarded here by Indigenous peoples in the PNW, and still is today! We will eat some of the scabbier tubers and plant the rest next year. I even tried replanting the original seed potato of the ‘Haida’, to see if they’ll come back next spring. We often get over-wintered potatoes here, even in zone 2, so I’m hopeful. When you want leek and potato soup but don’t have enough potatoes - green papaya to the rescue! This perennial “oerprei” leek is amazing! I harvested 3 from one of the rooftop containers and replanted 10 of its babies. It forms little bulbs like a garlic and expands rapidly into a huge clump. It also self seeds if you let it go to flower. Perennial vegetables are the best!
