🍁⚫️ Shot-hole borer crisis threatens Perth's tree canopy Hundreds of trees have been removed across the Perth region and hundreds more have been earmarked for removal under the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development’s management of Polyphagous shot-hole borer. The department’s commitment to an eradication approach sees affected trees removed with the view to eliminating the pest. Local authorities, tree owners and other stakeholders suggest that more open communication is needed, and that alternative approaches should also be considered, as attempts at eradicating the pest have failed in other parts of the world. Arboriculture and urban tree management experts and community groups are concerned that tree losses could increase exponentially, with significant impact on Perth’s already low canopy cover, and that the pest might be more likely to escape to other states and territories if the current approach is sustained. It has been suggested that a broader approach founded on evidence-based science involving local trees is needed. Drawings from an impromptu drawing session two weeks ago after a City worker showed up at my door, indicating that it was time for a beloved tree in the adjoining gulley (which had been marked for about a month) to come down. Decided to sit on the hillock behind the tree, and witness the whole process of the tree being taken down. 🌳 Celebrating Children's Forest London! 💚 We are so happy to see the very first urban Children's Forest planting, which took place in London recently. 🌿 Our hope is that every child has the opportunity to plant a tree in a Children’s Forest, so it's so exciting to see children in nature deprived areas to experience firsthand the deeply restorative qualities of nature and of themselves as part of the natural environment. 💚 This project was organised by Sajida, Jo and Stefania from Rangers Kindergarten, who trained on our Facilitators course and heard the call from friends who are the Land Guardians of a riverside space, where they are making improvements to the land and are working to create affordable moorings in London by advocating for river rights. 💚 Over 30 children and adults joined to conduct a huge litter pick before planting the trees. Sajida says “We gathered and merrily came together and planted the trees. We also was donated a hazel tree which is now watching our the Apple trees. The Hazel tree was planted by seed by a child, who gifted the tree to the Long Wall Ecology Gardens and was planted by the river. Both loving the intricacies of growth and its history marked by the endless years of extreme pollarding but hating the fact this has occurred and the tree exists in a stunted twisted form in the grounds of @dulwichgallery I wonder if it’s been there almost as long as the gallery would Sir John Soane have seen it. I spent Earth day doing this drypoint on a Tetra Pak considering the circular nature of this process, the wood pulp from cut trees made into cartons in order to transport oat milk instead of an animal milk, the transport and water consumption involved and of course the processing, the inevitable lining of the carton with a thin plastic coating to render it watertight. I’m trying to give it a little more life and making these prints ‘immortalising’ trees in my local area. All part of my larger work using a range of media and processes that I use in my practice. Just look around you and consider the trees in your local environment, it’s amazing how few are actually noticed until they become a focus point for usually a sad reason. Thinking this may be submitted to @woolwichcontemporaryprintfair but I’ve a lot more to do so keep popping back if you’re a tree lover.
