Growing up, our world is severely limited. Our relationship with our parents dictates our well-being and we haven’t yet developed the tools to objectively evaluate our family and its emotional dynamics. Considering how dependent, vulnerable, and impressionable children are, we can imagine how badly things can go when the parental role falls in the wrong hands. Take narcissism, for instance. A narcissistic parent—driven by self-interest—might organize the entire family around their emotional needs, neglecting and scarring their children in distinct and complicated ways.Identifying and defining abusive behavior empowers people to learn from it, grow, and move past it. If you have spent your childhood in the shadow of a narcissistic parent, you may identify with at least one of the following dysfunctional parent-child dynamics. 1. The “Golden Child” This parent-child relationship has a strong transactional component. In this scenario, one child is favored and loved-bombed by their parent—if and only if they conform to the conditions levied on them. From the outside, it may look like your narcissistic parent fawns over you and pampers you frequently. However, it is only the “golden child” who understands what it takes to remain perched on this pedestal their parent put them on. For instance, when the golden child performs well academically, a narcissistic parent might be inclined to reward them disproportionately and boast about their achievements to everyone around. The problem arises when the golden child slips up—typically incurring an unwarranted amount of discipline, ridicule, and punishment. This dysfunctional dynamic can go undiagnosed for a long time, as it can look like the child is being showered with love, care, and appreciation from afar. I was astounded to open this book by Peter Youngren and discover he also had been given a severe warning about his heart like me and told he needed a heart operation immediately or he would die. Thankfully, both Peter Youngren and I know a Creator who is bigger than that and we are both still alive despite not having had heart operations. It had been one thing after the other of HARD stuff. Every person in my little fam and extended has been dealing with heavy things: and we are talking BIG stuff like job loss, hospital stays, faith journey struggles, infections, mental illness, near death experiences for several people, and MORE. It was a LOT to say the least. On April 1st I was sitting with my parents and I said: “I AM DECLARING IT!! APRIL WILL BE THE MONTH OF MIRACLES!” 🙌🏼 I was manifesting it, loud and clear!! 😂 I was hoping by believing it and saying it and putting it out there - that it would come true. I was tired of so much HARD and I desperately NEEDED many miracles to happen. I had been pleading with God for months for miracles and I felt like they just weren’t happening! Well. Every day for the last 28 days, I have woken up and said: “It’s the month of miracles!” And throughout the day, I’d hope for one. ☀️ And you know what I learned?? THAT MIRACLES HAPPEN EVERY DAY!! ☀️🥹 Sometimes they’re small and you really need to look for them. And other times they’re big and you just can’t miss them. But often times they’re incredible things that we just take for granted: like the miracle that we woke up this morning. Or the miracle that the sun is shining. Or the miracle that our flowers are blooming! (I LOVE this time of year 🌸) Friends: I hope you’ll join me in manifesting that this new month ahead, MAY, will also be the month of miracles for YOU!! ☀️ I know if you look for the miracles, you WILL find them. I am grateful for the many miracles that I have witnessed this month. Jobs have been found. Health has improved. Faith has been restored. Lives have been saved. But are our lives perfect? NOT AT ALL! And are we still going through really freaking hard stuff? TOTALLY!! But does that mean that miracles aren’t happening?
