(1/1) How has the heat been affecting you, and the people you work with? ☀️ Have you noticed it is becoming really difficult to even work indoors? Air conditioners whirring overtime, so many drinks; two, sometimes three showers. So it is almost impossible to imagine the effect these summer months can have on the bodies and minds of people who labour outdoors—impacts on kidney and urogenital function, poor maternal health, rise in anemia in women, and far more instances of fatigue and stress. This #InternationalLabourDay, we wanted to look at some of the ways in which heat intersects with labour; the toll it takes on agricultural workers, especially women, and how they avoid some of its worst impacts. We kick off this May Day series with our #TLpartner producers @WildJaiFarm and @AamraByNSK. We wanted to know how the heat was impacting the health and wellbeing of people they worked with, and what they were doing through the day to beat the heat, whether by changing the way they worked, or what they ate and wore. Over the coming days, we will bring you stories that spotlight how agriculture, labour, and heat intersect by talking to some of our #TLPartner producers about what they are doing to change their work practices to adapt to the changing climate, curating resources from across media platforms that give us a nuanced understanding of these connections, and digging into the TL archives to highlight stories we have published that show us the many ways we can look at food and work. THIS is one of my favourite images (by Gavin Moroney) from Coffs Coast Long Lunch #2. For me it sums up my vision for CCLL - an opportunity to connect with other food lovers. In this instance Shearwater Restaurant’s head chef Josh who, after a busy service, came down to chat with guests even though he was exhausted. It shows generosity of spirit, a love of food and hospitality, happy vibes and connection. Yes, there are lots of long lunches on offer. What makes our different - and why our tickets cost more - is we want to offer a local food experience that features food, guest speakers, tastings, and true hospitality. Guests can enjoy locally cooked food, mingle with other food lovers, and meet and hear food stories from local food providers and growers. We also have a Taste & Talk Table to sample products, and chat one-on-one with some of the speakers and local producers. I love local. Celebrating it is what Coffs Coast Long Lunch is all about. When opening the Little Bohemia branch, we recognized the importance of preserving and honoring the history embodied in the building. Our third location not only boasted a beautiful mural but also featured a neon sign that we knew we had to incorporate into our final design plan. With the assistance of @arborstreetstudios and @omahaneon, we were able to restore the mural and signage, breathing new life into these iconic elements. Their meticulous work ensures that future generations can appreciate this significant Omaha landmark.
