Yes, @hambythepound 's debut EP "Heather" came out 2 wks ago but I needed time to give it a good serious listen, n last wk was bad 1 for me. Now I've finally finished my review/assesmt. Here it is: Most of its tracks have inventively catchy melodies despite being simple n repetitive ones. Each songs lyrics r very well written n give a coherent narrative usually in rhyming meter w/a few interstng turns of phrase. My favs off Heather r: 1) "Vivid Color" By far my fav, I luv its refrain. Its tune is so catchy, usually sticks in my mind most of day. Refrain's lyrics feel like a Punk anthem to b shouted. Also has great guitar riff in bridge. 2) "Sunshower" Luv how begins w/synthed Intro-like sound. As the EP contains no "Intro" trk, seems appropriate that its 1st trk begins as such. If purposely so arranged then kudos 4 thinking to do it. Its melody doesn't have a beachy feel but it's abt spending time at beach so I've added to my Summer Songs playlist. 3) "Cherry Blossoms" Just luv the creative, unique turn of phrase used in its refrain. 4) "Euphoria" Hits close to home 4 me. This past sumr. I had similar experience to that which it expresses. Conversely, "Ashes" has a dour tone n droning melody n is eschatologic in nature, quite appropriate 4 Ash Wedns. It has a GREAT bluesy guitar riff, tho. On recording, many of Heather's trks have similar snd n vibe to those of fellow local youth band @sonicblumeband - that '80s Alt/dreamy Pop style, including how Evan's vocals snd as recorded. Performed live tho, these sngs do not snd dreamy Pop, rather more intensely Alternative almost Post Punk n Evan's vocals snd grittier/pluckier. As Sonic B. is my fav local band, I enjoy how Heather's trks snd both on recording n played live but prefer their live snd. Overall, I find "Heather" fun, well composed melodically n lyrically, n the EP skillfully assembled. The hdliner, @monmouthuniversity own Malibu performed all their hits n danceables in their usual high energy style, with Scott n Ray seeming almost frenetic at times, to a fairly large crowd n a small flock of fellow Monmouth U. Hawks who danced, bopped n jumped arnd. in frnt of stage along w/yours truly. They cvrd Neon Trees' "Everybody Talks", played their latest release "Neverending May" n debuted a new song they've been working on, "Eventually". I assume it will be on their nxt album. It had the sound of an intensified folk-rock ballad, to me, which would be something of a departure from their usual indie alt/pop style. This time I got to hear 'em play more than the last time I saw 'em... n I was even more impressed n delighted. They did sm usual favs like "Ashes" n "Vivid Color" but they also mixed into this set sm mellower jams I'd not heard b4 like "Cherry Blossoms" n "Blistered Skin" along w/2 cvrs.: Surf Curse's emo ballad "Heather's" n Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream". Now in full honesty, I have no appreciation of Katy Perry's 🎵, in fact I hate most of it but the Rock style in which Ham played this sng transformed it into something so differently sounding that I didn't recognize it at 1st n really enjoyed it as well. By the application of Rock, maybe there's hope 4 Katy Perry's 🎶 after all. I also caught 'em doing 1 of my favs "She's Getting Tired". I luv the Punk vibe of it n Evan's delivery w/such visceral angst. They tell me its recorded sound isn't so good so they won't include it on their upcoming album. 2 wknds ago went to @the_chubby_pickle to c a local youth band I'd recently discvrd. n become enamored with, Ham By The Pound, but 1st came the warm up acts. Here they r. 1st Ruby did several rock n pop ballads on her usual uke. Here she's doing her most powerful 1 of the night, Billie Eilish's "All the Good Girls Go To Hell". Next, J Waltz played in a style reminiscent of '90s mild melodic Alternative. Here I got 'em doing originals "Sycamore Lane" n "Disarray". I found them akin to Blind Melon n The Lemonheads altho lead voclst. James tells me he's mightily influncd by Smashing Pumpkins. Then Flourish came on n delivered a vivacious n energetic prfrmnce despite lacking 2 usual band members, A.J. n Greg who were both at college. Their set included usuals "Monochrome" (my fav), cvr of "Ain't It Fun", "2 Little 2 Late" n this time a funky jam, "Slinky". Kevin Swanson filled in 4 Greg on drums n I tried to get something of a close-up of him in last vid. Last Wed., the eve of Thanksgiving, went to c 2 bands play at what was dubbed by the headliner as Funksgiving. That hdlnr. of course being local funk band Thelonious Funk, but the opening act was a local band I'd been wanting to c for a while but never could. I finally got to hear @hambythepound n I was pleased n impressed. I didn't know what sort of music 2 expect from them but their Indie/Alternative Rk sound elated me. In "Vivid Color", which they dedicated to schoolmate n Thelonious F. member Mike Viani, the guitar distortion sounds so seriously Alternative it intoxicated me. Their slower jam "Ashes" had a bluesy guitar riff which also felt intoxicating. I stood w/my mouth open in amazmnt, taking it all in n feeling it for most of their set. I haven't heard an Alt. Rck. band sound quite like that in a long time. Guess I'd been craving that snd. Then Thelonious F. took stage to shouts of "funk yeah" from the teeming crowd of mostly fellow CBA and Rumson Fr.Hvn. HS stdnts. They immediately put all in a boogying groove but the crowd was packed in so tight there wasn't room for anyone to truely dance. They played several cvrs incldg Mac Miller's "What's the Use" n DNCE's "Cake By The Ocean" reworded to "Funk By The Bay" for The Pickle. They did original n fan fav. "Kaleidoscope World" as well. I must admit that I'm not into Funk music, never really was but I had so much fun that nite. The stage presence of T. Last Sat. went to @theseafarerbar to c Natalie Farrell n Levy &The Oaks play. It was an acoustic nite tho, so neither had their entire bands. It was my 1st time back there since I went to dinner at The Clam Hut which stood on that very spot b4 Hurricane Sandy washed it away.😢 Memories of past good times there welled up from my depths as I sipped my beer n talked to people. But Natalie Farrell n her upbeat, soulful, folky style of music soon took my focus. Been meaning to c her perform 4 a while n wasn't disapntd. Last Sun. nite at Brighton Ave bandshell in @cityoflongbranch the air was alrdy pretty sultry but newly formed Blues band, Blues People, steam-bathed the West End with their hot funky-blues sound. This band is so brand new they don't yet have an Instagram page. I've tagged 2 members here. I usually don't film or post any of these free Sun. evening concrts but these dudes were just too hot! Lead singer Kelton Cooper, formerly with Black Widow Blues Band has a perfect voice 4 singin the Blues, Funk n Soul. Small brass sectn led by James Gibbs on trumpet sets them apart fr most other blues bands. Crowd esply liked their cvrs of Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" n Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working". Went to @the_chubby_pickle Thurs nite to c 2 local bands play n discvrd anoth great local band, En Delirium whom I showcase in separate post followg. 1st, The Highlands' own Kevin Daly warmed us up with his acoustic origls, "Uke Song" n "Sincerely, No One's". Next 1 of my local favs, Ross Owen & The Tribe prfrmd a mix of trks from their 2 albums. Here I got them doing "Wider Than Wide", "War Cry" n "Devil's Punch Bowl". They played the latter so that it never sounded so rockin n sinister b4. Their latest album, Seed, is pretty good. I recmnd listening on most pltfrms. Then, Guy from Idlewave came on to play Idlewave tunes acoustically. Here I got him doing "Calm", "Stay" n "Heaven Knows" + short riff. I hear he's been working on sm new stuff which will depart a lil from Idlewave's classic Emo/Skate Punk sound. Show at @houseofindependents Sun nite. Saw 2 bands I've come to luv n 3 been wanting to c. Malibu opened in usual gritty rockin style n played most of fans' favs. It seemed they made lotta new fans but they brawt only stickers so made no profits on merch.☹️ Next, @shoobiesnj came on with a mostly mellow, "beach rock"/indie pop sound. They also played more rocking trk, "Sex" fr their 1st EP. I really dig song in the 1st of their vids here. Their stuff mks me feel like summer n being on beach w/frnds or fam. THEN, @sonicblumeband blew me away like never B4. They did most of their fans' favs n covrd Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" w/a cool sound'g nuance to it. The beautiful way they rendered it along w/seeing crowd of kids singing along to a 35 yr old trk which was a major part of my childhood brawt tears to my eyes. In 1 song they launched into long riff of a serious Alternative nature. At 2 points in their set moshing n chanting broke out. That itself is a complement higher than any wrds I can write here. Ending Sunday's show @the_chubby_pickle was Monmouth U.'s own Malibu. They came on with such gusto, dynamism n rocking flair that they just SLAYED The Pickle crowd. They did all their fans' favs, includg "Manhattan" n others off Dangerous Valentine EP, their 1st record "Brighter Blue" n "Holly". If ur unfamiliar with these sngs I recomnd streaming on any pltfrm. Last Sun. went to anoth youth bands show @the_chubby_pickle n I'm sorry for posting this so late. Ruby R. Opened playing her signature ballads on uke which she really has an exclnt voice for. She covrd a few by Billie Ellish + "Cake" by Melanie Martinez. Next, newly formed band Ripped Laces took stage playing sngs from wide range of genres. They can do the Droning Grunge, Surf Rock, Punkish Funk n Emo sounds all well. Despite a few glitches, they did good esply considering they've been togthr only abt 1 wk. With sm wrk n polishing, they have potential. Then fan fav local band Flourish came on n OMG, they tore it up! They put on better show than the last time I saw them when they had bigr stage. Brendan's enrgy was on fire n boosted every 1 else's. They made their origls "To Do" n "Marking Time" sound better there than the recordings. They also covrd Greta Van Fleet's "Talk On The Street" w/a nuance of their own.
