April 18th, 2024. 📸 There’s not many artists who can sell out mid sized venues in major cities but also still play late night bar shows in the suburbs and have every single person in that room screaming every lyric. Basically what I’m saying is that FT’s shows are very, very, very special and have created such a unique community around the world. He played a new song–his favorite off the upcoming new album–and the entire room gave the longest round of applause afterwards. There were lots of old folks rocking out with Bruce Springsteen last night at the MVP Arena in Albany. I was one of them: my first Springsteen show was 47+ years ago — November 1976, at the Palladium on 14th Street in New York City (on the current site of Palladium Hall, an NYU dormitory tower). I sat in the last row of the topmost balcony, and stood on tiptoes to see the stage over the railing, watching him and the E Street band play “Spirit In The Night,” “Thunder Road,” “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” “Backstreets,” songs full of outsized teenage drama that spoke to me, since I was a drama-prone teenager, and because they were implicitly set in NY & NJ. Springsteen, now 74, played those songs and more last night, and they spoke in different ways. At times the lyrical drama sounded laughable, corny, even questionable, by 2024 standards. But Springsteen has this ability to play “Springsteen” with a wink, and he lets his audience play, too — holding the mic out during “Thunder Road,” for instance, to let the graying crowd bellow “maybe we ain’t that young anymore,” a line he wrote in his twenties. His moves last night were more Joe Biden than James Brown, though Springsteen’s endurance was pretty impressive during a 2 hr 45 min show with nearly no breaks longer than five seconds between songs. And it was touching how he brought the wage of age to bear on the show, most profoundly in a story about a former bandmate who died of lung cancer that culminated in his realization that “grief is the price we pay for loving.” But what moved me most, weirdly, was how the video team kept cutting to close-ups of the musicians’ wizened hands on the big screens, even when the hands weren’t playing instruments. They were like burled roots, and you could imagine the years pulsing through their swollen veins.
