Raffi Feghali –Peer Gynt of Bourj Hammoud – Lebanon Peer Gynt of Bourj Hammoud is a storytelling, monodrama performance that explores the theme of identity and multiple identities, especially in a world that's getting smaller and smaller. It uses real stories from the artists childhood growing up with an Arab father and an Armenian mother, and combines them through an overarching story; Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt. The performance digs into personal stories in order to search for identity and its effect on us whoever and wherever we are. ‘The exploration of identity automatically puts us in a "buffer zone"; on the one hand, we have our initial perception of who we are before we decide to question it, and on the other hand, we have answers that most likely are taking us away from that initial perception and, eventually further away from our comfort zones. Aristi Pavlou - ΔΙ(ΦΩΝΙΑ) | BI(PHONY) Cyprus ΔΙ(ΦΩΝΙΑ) | BI(PHONY) is a site-specific performative audiowalk which is bound and inspired by the surrounding space and aspires to give a temporal experience of it to the audience. The work is formulated within the space of the Buffer zone, as it is shaped by it. ‘The two spectators/participants will experience it simultaneously, afar and next to each other at the same time. This represents in a way how life moves on each side of the buffer zone; people move forward while living next to a buffer zone most of them ignore.’ Written, directed and created by Aristi Pavlou. The work was her graduation project for her MA Scenography artistic research at the HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht, the Netherlands. Lefki Papachrysostomou, Alma Alba Theatre company –Heteroclite “buffer memory” - Switzerland/Cyprus “Heteroclite buffer-memory” deals with the notion of the buffer zone as an in-between space by proposing a voyage through image, sound and movement. Inside this non-place, two heteroclite entities are wondering. The two bodies desperately try to meet, to transform the space by establishing a rite of passage. --------------------- The Alma Alba Theatre Company was created in Geneva, in 2011. The performances of the company were directed by Lefki Papachrysostomou and carried out in collaboration with actors, musicians, video artists, light designer, costume designers, set designers, technicians and scientific advisors. The Company focuses on research on the performative coexistence of theatrical or not theatrical text and today’s social reality. On stage, the artists attempt to present through prose, image, sound and movement what today’s life experience seems to be like. This performance team is composed by Laurent Annoni actor and acrobat and Verena Lopes actress and dancer. Space-Identity comes from beliefs, meanings, emotions, ideas and attitude assigned to a place.I was born in 1986, in East Beirut during the civil war, to a struggling, low-income middle class family. The notion of Home always felt blurred and hard to be defined or reached, due to political-social-economical-health difficulties.’ ‘Being born and raised in a divided country, the wars and unrest played a significant role in my life and was the main reason in our displacements as a family, and twisted my notion of identity and home. Presently, living a life with continuous movements abroad, I still struggle to find a culture or a place that I can call Home, giving me the feeling of being continuously in a Buffer zone.’ Ely Daou is an artist working with the political, social and personal art realm in a way where the viewer has space to think through. The “Counter-militarization Action” (The Counter-M Action) invites us to re-question the military status quo that has produced the UN Buffer Zone, by imagining the commons of the reunified Cyprus. The project showcases the on-going work of Laboratory of Urbanism University of Cyprus (LUCY) regarding design speculations on infrastructures for alternative urban futures of the Meridian City (Meridian city is the region roughly along the 33rd east meridian (line of longitude), connecting Kyrenia with Larnaca areas passing through Nicosia). The design hypothesis is that the transformation of the military areas into co-production activities will engender a network of open heterogenous collectives across the territory of the Meridian City. It will take place along a loop crossing the UN Buffer Zone both towards the north and the south parts of Nicosia on the 26th of October. Two tricycles with pulling banners will be following the loop in opposite directions through the crossings of Ledra Palace and Ledra Street Checkpoints in order to meet at three designated areas. During each stop the tricycles will be forming a space of dialogue regarding infrastructures for counter-militarization in the Meridian City. *The work to be shown on the banners is part of the Urban Design studio students’ projects of the Department of Architecture, University of Cyprus, Winter Semester 2018-19. An ‘Urban Glenti’ will be acted along the walls of the city. Behind a grove of plants and trees that will be brought to the site a stage of a courtyard will be generated between two tents and the walls. The tents will accommodate exhibition of the participants work as a hanging garden in dialogue with the mobile forest that will surround them. The courtyard will act as the environment where the ‘Urban Glenti’ will be celebrated with presentations and discussions. ‘The ‘Ledra Palace Museum’ project is based on the notion that museums dealing with difficult heritage can use technology to facilitate participatory and collaborative approaches, and actively engage different groups and communities. Dancehouse Lefkosia will host the dance performances on the last day of the Festival, on the 27th of October. Performances by local and international artists, related to their interpretations and experiences of the ‘in-between spaces’. Dancehouse Lefkosia is an infrastructure organization founded in August 2012 and it is now run by Dance Gate Lefkosia Cyprus (EDN member) and Lefkosia Youth Ballet who are its member organisations. The purpose of Dancehouse Lefkosia is to bring together the dance community in Cyprus, for the development and promotion of art and dance. The space offers its facilities for collaboration and dialogue with other related performance and contemporary art forms as well. 1984 Bar in Nicosia will be the first Main Stage of the Buffer Fringe 2019 on the 25th of October. 1984 is a music hall close to the Arabahmet neighbourhood and has been hosting many popular musical performances from across the island. ————————————————— Halil Karapaşaoğlu : Is the owner of the venue and a prominent Cypriot Poet, born in 1985, he has published articles in several acclaimed Cypriot and publications. His poems have been translated into English and Greek, and they were even featured in the “Anthology of Young Cypriot Poets”His poems, stories and critical writings are published in the literary magazine “Uçsuz” published in Nicosia since 2017. In 2019, he participated in the bi-communal poetry event held at the Embassy of Cyprus in Athens. In September 2019, his last poetry book “The Universe of the Last Time” is going to be published both in Greek and Turkish by first bi-communal publishing house “Baranga”. Meet Maria Varnakkidou, a Mentee of the Buffer Fringe 2019 Mentorship Program. —————————————————— Maria is a young theatre director who studied Contemporary Theatre (Brunel Univ.) and has an MA in Directing (Royal Holloway Univ.). She has been working as a director and workshop facilitator for theatre as a tool for non-formal education in Cyprus and abroad. She is a member of the board of Rooftop Theatre. She participated with her work in Kypria Festival and in the residency program of Mitos(Limassol) and Phytorio(Nicosia). Maria will be assisting in the incubation period with student teams from collaborating universities.
