Hello, thought we would share what we learnt about Cherry Eye with anyone who might need it (touchwood - hope you guys will never require this information). 1. Vets would recommend antibiotic + anti inflammatory eye drops for 1-2 weeks and if it doesn’t subside, they will recommend surgery as it indicates that the cause is likely weakness of the supporting ligament instead of swelling of the gland. (Supported by our vet + second vet + vets online- consult group) 2. Prolonged exposure of the tear gland (aka cherry eye) (i.e. >2 weeks) is not recommended as it increases the risk of conjunctivitis, ulceration of the eye corneal and dry eye. 3. Not all vet clinics offer cherry eye surgery as it requires specialised equipment and not all vets are able to carry out cherry eye surgery. 4. While there are manual maneuvers that can place the cherry eye back in, if the cause of the cherry eye is weakened ligament, rate of relapse is high. There are different techniques for cherry eye surgery. Not all vet surgeons do the same technique so it would be good to clarify with the vet before committing. 1. Removal of tear gland (ancient method - not recommended as evidence show that those who went through removal ended up with chronic dry eye) 2. Tacking technique 3. Morgan pocket technique or modified Morgan pocket technique Conclusion after reading through Pubmed: Success rate of Morgan pocket technique was higher than Tacking Technique. Relapse rate was lower for modified Morgan pocket technique compared to Morgan pocket technique. #cherryeyesurgery #cherryeye

Inka is a 10-month-old, harlequin Great Dane 😊 Her left eye had a prolapsed third eyelid gland and so she needed to under-go 'Cherry Eye' surgery. Marta, one of our Ophthalmologists at Woodcroft Hospital repaired the issue under general anaesthetic much to Inka's relief. Terkkuja sairastuvalta. 🤕 Olen vielä vähän tokkurassa. Olen käynyt nyt reilun kuukauden sisään aika monta kertaa eläinlääkärissä. Ensin multa poistettiin viimeinen kulmahammas. Seuraavalla viikolla siltä mamma kiikutti lääkräiin, kun minulla tuli silmästä vilkkuluomi esiin. Sitä hoidettiin ensin yksillä tipoilla ja kun asia ei korjaantunut kävin uudelleen lääkärissä ja sain toiset tipat. Hetken silmä oli normaali, mutta pian vilkkuluomi tuli taas esiin. Tänään mut vietiin taas lääkäriin ja sitten heräsinkin tällainen tötterö päässä. Minulta kuulema leikattiin kirsikkasilmä. Viikon verran pitäisi pitää tätä hökötystä päässä ja laittaa tippoja. Tippojen laitosta meillä onkin mamman kanssa jo paljon kokemusta, joten se menee varmasti hyvin! P.S.
