#KoderHouse #KochiDiaries #HistoricHomes #FamilyLegacy #CochinJews #HeritageofKerala #PortraitsOfThePast #LivingHistory #CulturalTapestry #AncestralPride #Indien #Kerala #Kochi #LeicaQ2 #LeicaEDC

Silk & Gold Brocade were the ceremonial dress made of, worn by Cochin Jews in the 16th century. The more beautiful thing is the integration of the cultures and speaks volumes of the cosmopolitian nature of Cochin centuries ago. All married women wore a gold tahli which was the custom of all communities in Kerala. The costumes worn by the Cochin Jews in the 16th century resemble the Spanish costumes of the Jewish women of Morocco. #rejugeorge #lovemycochin #cochinjews #bygonecochindays @thejewishmuseum Credit courtesy : 400th Anniversary of the Cochin Synagogue 1968 souvenir. gpura org digital archives

🎶 Dos kandelikas… 🎶 • The second night of Chanukah is gulab jamun: soft milk-based dough fried and soaked in sugary syrup. • The Bene Israel say their ancestors fled Judea for what would become India during the time of Antiochus IV, the bad guy in the Maccabean story of Chanukah. • The original Jews of Cochin, India, say they arrived even farther back, during the time of King Solomon. And there is a second group of Jews in Cochin: Sephardi who were expelled from Spain in 1492. • Then there are the Baghdadi Jews who settled in many parts of India, and elsewhere in South and Southeast Asia, in the 18th century. • The Jews of India enjoy gulab jamun at Chanukah. I am enjoying it at an Indian restaurant in Huntington, West Virginia. • (Is/was. Most of the Jews of India have left for Israel, Australia, Canada, the UK…) • Coincidentally, the @oxfordfoodsymposium is hosting a Zoom event on the culinary influences of Central Asia/Persia on India’s foodways on Monday, 11 December. “Galub” in galub jamun is from the Persian for flower water since the sugary syrup is often scented with rose petals. I wonder if the event will discuss galub jamun? • From Central Asia to India to West Virginia to your Instagram feed. • Happy Chanukah to all who celebrate! • (The Hindi version of Hava Nagila by Usha Khanna is awesome.) • #galubjamun #indianfood #happyhanukkah #happychanukah #chanukah #hanukkah #beneisrael #cochinjews

I made this diagram for my story along time ago because people seemed confused about denominations vs. Jews being an ethnicity vs. our sub-ethnicities. I wrote it off the top of my head and today a few people requested I make it a post sooooo pardon my obscenities 🤌🏼🤷🏼‍♀️🩷. Some additional notes: Jews do not proselytize. Also Jews believe in matrilineal and sometimes patrilineal descent which is why yes, Jews today are the descendants of the ancient Jews of Judea. DNA does prove this genetic link. Please do not confuse this with blood quantum. We do not believe you have to have Jewish DNA to be a Jew. Like many other indigenous tribes, tribal membership is dependent on the parameters of that tribe. Membership is a difficult process but when you become a member, you are fully a member and part of our Jewish collective soul. - *please note for time, when I made this, I just wrote the 3 largest sub-ethnic groups. There are more such as Beta, Cochin, Bene etc. - - Also, this is VERY VERY in general. There is so much more to our history, the constant exiles, the haskalah, and even movements once in America, but it’s a meme people. #israelites #judea #kingdomofJudah #jews #israel #sephardic #mizrahi #ashkenazi #cochinjews #betajews

Embracing the allure of Cochin Jewish heritage! Traditional jewelry is more than adornment; it’s a cultural identity. Imagine the Cochin Jewish bride, bedecked in gold earrings and necklaces, a dazzling display covering her bodice. Essential to her wedding costume was a unique tortoise shell and gold necklace, like this exquisite example worn by a prominent member of the Cochini Jewish community. The first strand around her neck, symbolizing tradition and elegance. #CochinJews #JewishHeritage #CulturalAdornments #WeddingTraditions #jewsofcolor #jewishdiversity #multiculturaljews

Chapter 4: Cochin Jews of 'Spirit of India' production. The Jewish community of India although very small in number but significant in their presence and culture has a lot of historic importance. We chose to present the story of Cochin jews. Present day Kerela houses synagogues which stand as Jewish Pilgrimage centres from all over the world. Starting the dance recital with Kalaripayattu which is an ancient martial art indigenous to Kerela..we moved on to a Jewish folk dance along with them witnessing a harmonious performance of Thiruvathira. We tried to show the integration between two communities through the beautiful institution of marriage and ending the sequence with a popular Jewish Horah. 📍Paradesi Synagogue, Jew Street, KOCHI Following the Reconquista in the 15th century, the Jews in Spain and Portugal were given the choice to either convert to Catholicism or leave the nation. Many of those who fled in this manner found refuge in the upcoming port of Kochi. In 1568, they were granted land to build a synagogue by Keshava Rama Varma right next to the royal palace. They were thus added to the cultural mileau of Kochi, alongside the Middle Eastern and native Jews. Jewish merchants expanded the synagogue throughout history, with the most notable renovation being in the 17th century, which added the clock tower and hundreds of hand painted Chinese tiles for the floor. However, racism prevailed among the society, and there was a slave class among the Jews called Meshrucharim who were not allowed to enter the synagogue or marry Paradesis.

📍 Thekkumbhagom synagogue, Ernakulam, KOCHI Down Jew street in Ernakulam are two sister synagogues, named Kadavumbhagom (Riverbank side) and Thekkumbhagom (Southern). This is the latter one. But why is it called southern? Judaism came to Kerala nearly 2000 years ago, and became a prominent trading community in Muziris (present Kodungallur), then the biggest port on the Kerala coast. There were mainly two groups, which were the Levantines and the Yemenis. Both of them constructed different synagogues due to enmity. The Levantines built one on the banks of the Periyar river, so it was called Kadavumbhagom, and the Yemenis built theirs in a location to the south of the other one, so it was called Thekkumbhagom. When Muziris was destroyed by a flood in the 14th century, the Jews shifted to Kochi and rebuilt their synagogues. However, the new Kadavumbhagom was nowhere near a river, and the new Thekkumbhagom was actually north of it's sister. After most of the Kochi Jews migrated to Israel, this place has been locked, although I've heard that restoration is ongoing.

While aiming to study and catalogue Jewish Indian food I travelled to all the major synagogues of India over a span of 5 years. Every one is magnificent. Now with a dwindling Jewish population many do not have a Minyan to conduct a service. Minyan is a minimum number of adult men required to do prayers. Many of these synagogues are maintained by the Indian government and interestingly most of the caretakers are Muslims. Infact if you visit synagogues in Kolkata and Ahmedabad many of them are situated in Muslim mohallas. Indian Jews have never faced any discrimination from any community in India a fact that one should feel very proud of. The three distinct communities - Cochin, Bene Israel and Baghdadi have separate histories but now more communities such as the Bnei Menashe and the Guntoor Jews have also come to light in recent times. Every one of these Indian Jewish communities cooks differently. You will find the link to a piece I wrote for @indiafoodnetwork on Bene Israel cuisine in the bio. Have you ever cooked Jewish Indian cuisine? Do you understand kashrut? Join me on Sunday to talk a little bit about these fascinating communities and their delicious cuisine. 5 pm Sunday insta live! #jewish #jewishindian #beneisrael #baghdadi #cochinjews #bethel #kenesetheliyahoosynagogue #oheldavidsynagogue

“I travelled from Spain I had heard of the city of Shingly; I longed to see an Israeli King, Him I saw with my own eyes.” This is a 14th century poem by Rabbi Nissim of Barcelona describing a descendant of Rabban: When there was a Jewish king who ruled a part of Cochin. In the early 11th century, Chera King Bhaskara Ravi Varma appointed Jewish merchant Joseph Rabban as a de facto king of Changala Azhi, a riverside settlement near Kodungallur (Muziris, as the Greeks called it). Rabban was bestowed the land and privileges by a decree that was recorded on what is called the Jewish copper plates of Cochin. The decree was engraved in the Vattezhuthu segmental writing system in the Malayalam language on two plates. Rabban was given the so-called Ancuvannam merchant guild rights and was exempted from certain payments, while at the same time having all the usual rights given to settlers. These rights and exemptions were to be perpetually passed down to his descendants as well. This is a beautiful painting of Joseph Rabban (Yosef Rabban‎; Judeo-Malayalam: Isuppu Irabbân) "leader of the Jews, receiving the copper plates" The plates state: “We have granted to Issuppu Irappan, the (guild of) Ancuvannam, tolls by the boat and by other vehicles, Ancuvannam dues, the right to employ the day lamp, decorative cloth, palanquin, umbrella, kettle drum, trumpet, gateway, arch, arched roof, weapons and rest of the seventy two privileges. We have remitted customs, dues and weighing fee.” The copper plates have been well preserved and are in an iron box at the Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry. The Changala Azhi settlement was well known in Europe and fascinated many travellers and merchants who had heard of the ‘Jewish king’ in Kerala. According to P M Jussary’s 1996 paper titled A Jewish Settlement in Medieval Kerala, the settlement was known in Europe as “Shingly, Chingilin, Cingalah and Zinglantz.” The legacy of Joseph Rabban is celebrated by the Jews of Kerala.... #rejugeorge #lovemycochin #cochinjews Article inputs ; Onmanorama - Ajay Kamalakaran , picture courtesy : Jews of Cochin - Bala Menon .The painting is there on the Pardesi synagogue , Jew Street , Mattanch

In the beautiful city of Cochin, a community lived for over two millenia, honoured and respected by the local people, and they thrived. The Raja of Kochi received them graciously and gave them a principality with their own chief and a charter etched on copper plates, granted them royal privilages in perpetuity for as long as the world and the moon exists. The Jews lost their principality when the Portuguese arrived, and sought help from the Raja, who offered them a town for their own next to his palace. This is their story. What a historic photograph showing Jewish community leaders meeting with an emissary from Israel in Ernakulam, India. Newly formed state of Israel calling back its people to return back to their homeland. The early days of Aliyah in Cochin where an entire community of Jews, who trace their roots there all the way back to the times of the biblical King Solomon returned back to original homeland after more than two thousand plus years. “Immigration to Israel began the moment the state was declared. The Jews immediately began getting ready,” explains Mira Elia of the Cochin Jewish Heritage Center. “Their whole purpose was to immigrate to Israel and that was their goal.” Back in 1949, the first members of the community to immigrate traveled via train for three days to reach Bombay – present-day Mumbai – where they waited for many months to catch a flight to the Holy Land. “They arrived from a beautiful, green and tropical land to an arid desert , but they wanted to settle in a place where they could work and establish the state. The Jew Town today buildings and street concept still more or less looks the same but with a commercially messed up version changing the whole flavor from a quiet relaxed and graceful environment it once was , the jewish customs and rituals including the lighting of the lamp in the homes inviting blessings , giving a atmosphere charged with positive energy. #rejugeorge #lovemycochin #JewTown #bygonecochindays #cochinjews #Jewstreet #jews

"Until less than a hundred years ago, Cochin Jews still had the custom of celebrating the inauguration of the Shabbat by lighting stone lamps at the entrance to their homes. The synagogue beadle would go from house to house lighting the lamp with a torch kindled from the "Ner Tamid" that hung before the ark. Simultaneously women would kindle the Shabbat lamp. The lamp... was suspended from the ceiling and had seven oil cups around a metal ring" How stunning this Shabbat lamp looks and what a beautiful custom / ritual it is . The pictures are of a Brass Shabbat lamp, India, from the early 20th century. A circular Shabbat lamp, with seven spaces for hanging small oil cups. The lamp is suspended with three rods, with loops at their ends that connect to hooks at the base of the lamp. #rejugeorge #cochinjews #mattancherry #bygonecochindays Credit courtesy :Literature: Orpa Slapak (editor), "The Jews of India - Bene-Israel, Cochin Jews, Baghdadi Jews", The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1995, Ist Dibs

Here Comes the Bride...The Bridal March This is a vintage photograph of a Cochin Jew wedding from the Koder family. The bridal party with the bride all decked in wedding finery & Jewellery is walking under a decorated umbrella towards the synagogue with music accompaniments of drums , horns and other ceremonial cultural symbols. During the wedding procession, the woman sing the wedding song “Ponnaninjeedum” or “He Comes in a Gold Adorned Palanquin”. This is a historic wedding song which poetically sings about Ousep Rabban, the medieval merchant prince and folk hero of the Cochin Jews witnessing a wedding ceremony. Here’s a few lines from the song: “Ponninjeedum thandukaleri, mangala vele kanman (He comes in gold decorated palanquin to witness the wedding festivities) Ponnurumala marvilum ponnu, poosari manthal meethe. Mannavan ekan poyithuyilatum, pattani poondu nala” (With gold chain in the chest and gold glittered canopy above, a king (Oseph Rabban) clad in golden fluttering silks) #rejugeorge #lovemycochin Picture credit courtesy : Reddit com , galaxy Kerala #cochinjews #pardesijews #bridalmarch #herecomesthebride #cochinjewwedding #jewishwedding #weddingcostume #weddingsong #mattancherry #jewtown #koders #cochin #vintagephotograph
