Whitman on Walls! (WoW!) at Stony Brook University En Italiano 🇮🇹 & English HAPPY #poetrymonth 2024!!! We have exciting news about Colombari’s poetic undertakings. At the end of March, Compagnia de’ Colombari’s first WoW! of 2024 was a bilingual one (in English & Italian), just like the Compagnia itself, and took place Alan S. deVries Center at @stonybrooku The university’s Italian studies students, Bryanna Noriega, Grace Cutrone, and Ludovica Constanzo read translations of the poem “E difficicile” by F. Sueri from Italian to English and vice versa, intermixed with poetry from local Italian American poet Peter Carravetta and Marc Fasanella reading Edward Bellamy, and seven short films from Colombari inspired by Walt Whitman’s renowned poem, “Song of Myself,” a celebration of freedom, inclusion, and democracy. The films, created in collaboration with 50 Colombari artists around the world 🌎 during the pandemic paired with the live poetry readings acts as a “movie screening meets poetry slam.” In a special twist, Walter Giorgis-Blessant and his Italian students from Bronx Science joined in the fun from the screen sharing Italian translations with Mr. Giorgis-Blessant dressed up like Whitman! A GATHERING TO REMEMBER: Compagnia de Colombari Launches Its 20th Anniversary Season with a Film That Showcases Colombari’s Vision & Karin Coonrod’s Process We are still buzzing with joy from last week’s launch of our 20th Anniversary season with a special screening of A GATHERING OF STRANGERS, a film by Ted Hardin about the making of The Merchant of Venice in the historic Venice Ghetto. The rough cut screening was held at the McNally Amphitheatre at @fordhamuniversity @lincolncenter campus. The GATHERING was not of strangers but of friends of Colombari, old and new, as a packed house came to witness the behind the scenes world of one of Colombari’s most thrilling achievements and adventures in its two decades of history, the creative odyssey in 2015-2016 that led to the creation and performance of Shakespeare’s iconic work in the place that inspired it (Venice’s 500 year old Jewish ghetto) with an international cast and five actors of varying ages, races, genders and backgrounds playing Shylock. Filmmakers Elizabeth Coffman (producer) and Ted Hardin’s (director/writer & editor) ever-present camera 🎥 bore witness to Karin Coonrod’s directorial process, the actors’ personal journeys, and the global turmoil that was brewing, heightening and continues today. In preparation for our 20th anniversary, our director Karin Coonrod went on whirlwind adventure in Italy 🇮🇹 at the end of December, starting with Orvieto, the birthplace of Colombari. There she met with many longtime and new friends, collaborators and supporters, including Stefano Benini—the director of the choir at the Duomo and a tenor with Colombari from the get-go. It is exceedingly special to where we launched Colombari in 2004! The city is filled with memories—old, new, and yet to come. Stefano and Karin are standing in front of the tower Saint Andrea (in piazza della repubblica) where the angels announced the nativity: Surgite Pastore!!! How appropriate to harken Colombari’s STRANGERS AND OTHER ANGELS returning to Orvieto in June 2025. The second photo is Alessandro (another Compagnia Colombari veteran!) with our Development Manager, Sofia Crouch in Via del Duomo with, the Duomo behind. In front of that central door Trazana recited Janes Weldon Johnson’s “Creation” from God’s Trombones. Here in 2004-2006 Colombari started the passeggiata for Laude in Urbis, which we are retitling “Stranieri ed Altri Angeli” or STRANGERS AND OTHER ANGELS. In the Christmas spirit, the Colombari crew met Federico and Hannah (and Sebastiano and Edmond) in Federico’s beautiful leather shop where everyone bought a beautiful item of hand-crafted leatherwork. Caratteristici del paesaggio tufaceo dei comuni di #Pitigliano e #Sorano sono i #colombari, ambienti scavati nel tufo in cui numerose piccole nicchie appaiono accostate l’una all’altra lungo le pareti; a questi si accede attraverso un cunicolo. Per molto tempo i colombari sono stati considerati sepolture funerarie di età romana, dove le cellette definite colombaria erano destinate ad ospitare le urne cinerarie dei defunti. Si ritiene che i colombari dell’area del tufo, come quelli dell’insediamento di #Vitozza nella foto, risalgano all’età medievale. La struttura sembra rispondere ad esigenze essenzialmente pratiche: ad esempio la localizzazione in posti poco accessibili lungo le rupi tufacee è dovuta alla necessità d’impedire l’introduzione di animali predatori, mentre il cunicolo permetteva l’accesso all’uomo. Presto nuovi #colombari nel Cimitero storico di Cinisello che ha riaperto oggi dopo i lavori alle alberature danneggiate dal #maltempo. La Giunta ha approvato il progetto definitivo ed esecutivo. I nuovi manufatti verranno realizzati nell’area adiacente all’attuale fabbricato adibito ad ossari, un’area che il Piano Cimiteriale ha individuato per un ulteriore ampliamento. Il progetto prevede la costruzione di 72 nuovi #loculi, suddivisi in 7 moduli da 12 loculi ciascuno. L’importo previsto è di 230mila euro. «Considerando le diverse forme di sepoltura richiesta dai cittadini e, in particolare, osservando l’andamento delle concessioni relative a colombari, da tempo ci si è accorti della necessità di mettere a disposizione della cittadinanza nuovi manufatti. Proseguiranno gli investimenti per la manutenzione straordinaria e la messa in sicurezza, e l’impegno per la cura e la conservazione dei nostri Cimiteri, luoghi di affetto e di memoria». Erano anni che non entravo in un castello! 🏰 Castello Ursino a Catania è stato costruito per volere di Federico II di Svevia. Dopo la morte dello Stupor Mundi, il castello è stato il cuore nevralgico della rivolta dei Vespri Siciliani, come sede del Parlamento. Da questo castello venne rapita Maria di Sicilia, da Guglielmo Raimondo Moncada, nel 1379! E in questo luogo Alfonso V d'Aragona firmò l'atto per la fondazione dell'Università di Catania. ⏳️ Quando il museo dentro Palazzo Biscari (voluto dal mecenate Ignazio Paternò Castello, principe di Biscari) venne chiuso, e le opere divennero proprietà dello Stato Italiano, venne scelto questo castello per ospitare il museo civico di Catania.
