✨🥰 Happy 2023! 🥰✨ This new year is a great moment to create new visions and goals for the new start, and for that it’s important to take a moment to reflect, acknowledge, be grateful and have a look at the fruits we collect from the last year. 🎉 Our objective is to create a satisfying life in rural Oaxaca and in the towns to prevent migration, while dressing you with items that have cultural and traditional significance to make you feel comfortable and satisfied. 🫶🏽 For that we were able to make the next steps in 2022: ⫸ Donate more than $62 100 MXN for community projects of health, traditional midwives in the front line 😍 ⫸ Collect $56 400 MXN for construction materials, food and beds for families in Xanaguía, Oaxaca, affected by the hurricane in May 🤩 → Donations summed up to more than $ 118 500 MXN in 2022 and were directed to the communities in rural Mexico 😭😍🥰 OMG thank you!! ⫸ Our biggest challenge this year was to find enough raw materials for the production, as last year’s global movements affected our thread providers. 🧵 ⫸ Despite that, our team grew and we gave work for 2 artisan groups more, being 21 new members entering the collaboration with Antama. We work directly with 9 families around rural Oaxaca. Now we are 66 people. 🤝🏼💪🏼 ⫸ Of our 60 artisans 100% are from the Zapotec origin and 99% of them still speak the Zapotec dialects. ✊🏼 ⫸ Other part of our team has roots coming from Chiapas, Otomi-Nahua, Guatemala-Veracruz and Finland. 🧡🌎️ !! Español en comentarios. The cotton we use in our baby products and Ruana Xipatlanis is native to the Costa Chica of Oaxaca. The fabric is woven here on the mountains in San Sebastian Rio Hondo by the group Khadi Oaxaca who coordinate the production of heritage white and native coyuchi cotton (brown, pre-Hispanic) from 35 small producers in 12 coastal communities of Oaxaca. They promote and support the ancestral practice of intercropping cotton with corn and other edible plants (milpa). Traditional, small farmers participate as a means to supplement subsistence agriculture thus preserving native corn races as well. The farmers receive training and technical assistance in agro-ecological production to support the goals of soil conservation, regenerative fertility, increased biodiversity and farmer and community health. They do not irrigate nor use any agro-chemicals. They do use Integrated Pest Management and homemade biological inputs to reduce pest pressure and increase soil fertility. The group, N’un Ndito Tierra Viva (Mixteco for living earth), is on its way to becoming a self-supporting cooperative with a participatory organic production certificate. SPINNING Today, there are 250 women from San Sebastián and its surrounding homesteads, who remove the seeds and clean the cotton brought from the coast. They then card and spin it, all by hand, using spinning wheels in their homes. It takes up to a month for a woman to spin one kilo of thread. Local carpenters reproduce the spinning wheel (charka) designed by Gandhi so that each artisan has her own. Information from Khadi Oaxaca.

Meet the maker 🕸️ Spanish in comments. My name is Arturo Hernández. I'm of Zapotec descent born in the region of the central valleys of Oaxaca in the town of Mitla (Mictlán "sacred city of the dead"). At the age of 7 or 8 years I began to get involved in the work of my ancestors as part of helping and learning within the textile industry, that their work was. I started with the back strap loom, then with the dyeing of natural dyes and then after years with the pedal loom through which I developed a special feeling towards the textile. At the age of 21 I migrated to the United States which was a total change of work and culture for me together with the need to get ahead. I worked two decades in that country, always remembering my descent and textile work. On my return to my home I was able to set up my own textile workshop to start again. I opted for artisan textile work seeing on my return the textile market saturated with the same kind of products. I decided to innovate my textiles different from the others, returning to the natural dyes and designs created by myself. Nowadays thanks to the textile I have been able to get ahead with my family and support other families. Through this work I have met people interested in the textile industry that care for the environment since our products and dyes are totally natural such as wool, cotton and indigo. I feel very proud and grateful for this textile craft work. Also Arturo's son Martin is involved in the weaving of the textiles together with other 5 men from the town. After the fabrics are woven 3 women knot the fringes. ---------------
When the plant world and people come together 🧡 Hand spun Native organic cotton from Oaxaca. ⫸ Continuing from the latest post. Antama provides work directly to 44 persons and we are from the southern mountain range of Oaxaca and from the valleys! In 2020 despite the covid we were able to give work to 15 artisans more! In 2019, 18 persons entered to work with Antama. We think that’s amazing and celebrate it! So despite Covid locking down the communities, driving the tourism away from the local markets and making the local sales of the artisans imposible (even demanding persons that kept on working) we kept on hiring and providing sustain for our artisans. Our collaborations include projects with more than 200 families involved. Amazing right? In the recent months from March onwards our sales dropped 40% leading us to a situation where we are reflecting our ability to provide sustainable work. We are a bit afraid of how to apply one of our most important values; the security and wellbeing, in our communities but also think everything will turn perfect on the road. Therefore we want to bow deeply for all the persons that have supported us during these 8 years when we have worked with local master artisans! Nothing of this is possible without you. At Antama we take real steps towards manifesting our vision of wellbeing in rural Mexico. This is done not only with offering work but as investing 10% of each month's gains back to the communities and by local service (mostly in births and tequios, community work). For us the wellbeing in our communities can be manifested also through our local midwives and traditional midwives are on the top of our list of people we want to support. Hola it's time to present us. We are Manuel and Anna, cofounders of Antama and parents to three kids. We live at Sierra Madre Sur, (Souther mountains) of Oaxaca, Mexico. Antama is one our projects to work in solidarity with the people on the Zapotec lands of Cem Ānáhuac (also called Oaxaca, Mexico) honoring their work. We are inspired by hand made items not just as a work and creation, but also as a process that each individual faces when entering to the process of learning, the oral transmission, repetition, dreaming/designing and finishing a process. The traditional art entwine the culture, oral and practical tradition, cosmo vision, knowledge about the materials, traditional medicine and symbols of the pueblo (people) and is an expression of the existence of a group of persons. It moves in cycles and is not lineal. We are a Mexican-Finnish couple in search of our true face (rostro verdadero), our roots and identity by polishing our hearts. Apart of Antama our other intents in returning back to the roots is our ranch and social work in the communities. We live surrounded by a forest on a ranch that we have been building all the way from zero. It's one of our personal learning spaces, ecologic building with traditional techniques and local materials, herb gardens and plant medicines, planting, guarding organic seeds and so on. Making everything by hand is quite slow, but also rewarding as entering to a learning process is not only about the final result but everything on the way to it. For us it is important that we, and especially our children, can live surrounded by the 4 elements; we drink fresh spring water, breathe clean mountain air, warm the house by nights with fire and walk on the bare earth beneath us. We use solar energy and are doing homeschooling. Anna is learning traditional midwifery, inspired by the nature and dance and Manuel is an artisan with hands on everything. Lu Dani is a handwoven fair trade rebozo where the traditional and contemporary textile art meets. Made with natural indigo plant dye. Carefully woven of thick 100% cotton threads with white and indigo blue threads. The blue areas are wider on the edges and fade towards the center. Threads are hand dyed so the forms on each rebozo vary slightly and each piece is unique. The texture is thick and has a grasp in it.

Meet our artisans; This is Marisol making the knotting of the fringes of a Nixtamal rebozo. In an artisan group that still works with a traditionally based structure each family member has an important part in the everyday life including the work. This also creates community. Marisol has a 10 month old baby, so working at home is perfect as she can go with the rhythm of the small one and herself as well. In a family based group also a helping hand is always near to the one who's in need. •••••••• Conoce nuestros artesanos; Ella es Marisol y está haciendo el empuntado de un rebozo Nixtamal. En un grupo de artesanos que todavía trabaja con una estructura tradicional, cada miembro de la familia tiene un rol importante en la vida diaria, incluyendo el trabajo. Esto también crea comunidad. Marisol tiene una bebé de 10 meses, entonces trabajar desde la casa es perfecto para ella para poder hacerlo con el ritmo de la peque y de ella misma. Some of the values behind Antama are: We aim to make direct long-lasting partnership with the artisans and artisan societies and to be connected with individuals in the process of making the products. That creates a symbiosis in between Antama and the artisans. We support the handmade production of ecologic and nature friendly items and the traditional art of craftsmanship. We work in collaboration with various artisan families and communities especially in the rural areas of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. For us putting our seed in preserving and reinforcing traditional crafts and helping people to stay to work in their pueblos (hometowns) instead of needing to move to the cities in search of work is very important. We do not bargain down the salaries of the artisans. One of our main goals is to support also the birth cultures, midwives, doulas and families around the world with our authentic rebozos. We also want to support the traditional midwifery and rebozos cultural context by sharing information about this ancient wisdom in our social media pages and at our Blog. Each month we donate 10% of the months gain to local midwives, low-income families and local organizations to support the health of our local communities. In 2019 we have worked hard to have plant dyed and organic textiles as well in our collection.
The idea behind Antama is to provide products made in local Anahuacan (Mexican) communities to the world, and by this support the life, ancient skills and traditional crafts of the artisans, artists and communities who created them.

Did you know the rebozo massages are not just part of Mexican midwifery but part of traditional medicine in general? Just recently talked with an Argentinian midwife apprentice and medic and she was very surprised to hear also men do give and receive rebozo massages. For her rebozo was the same as manteada made for a woman. It's part of maternity care here, but not limited only to it.
