Fantastic rainy day experience of the Jack in the Green festival in Hastings today. We got soaked but had a brilliant time! It’s wonderful to see the range of ideas and creativity and energy that people put into their costumes and actions. Friend Jenny had organised an amazing outfit with knitted leaves, ivy twine and amazing ’Frida Kahlo’-like headdress. The wool came from her own sheep and she did the shearing, carding, spinning and knitting. She dyes them with her own plant dyes, in this case alkanet and indigo on white wool, and the brown is a natural colour from her Shetland sheep. Pretty amazing. 🍂🥑Na maanden hoofdzakelijk breien begint het te kriebelen om de dozen met verfplanten en keukenafval uit te pakken en weer eens verfbaden te maken. Benieuwd of ik vorige zomer zorgvuldig genoeg gedroogd heb. Vele, vele manen geleden, maakte ik een top geverfd met brandnetel. Het was de allereerste zelfgemaakte en plantgeverfde top die ik maakte. Brandnetel oogste ik op een plek waarvan ik wist dat de plant weggehaald zou worden. Zoals dat wel vaker gebeurt met brandnetel of met ander planten die als onkruid worden gezien. Toen ik aankwam met mijn mand wist ook de plant dat dit ook dit jaar zou gebeuren. Toch besloot de brandnetel jaar op jaar op deze plek te verschijnen. Ookal werd het telkens weer weggehaald. De brandnetel inmiddels al flink en fors had gewaakt voor de andere planten en de jonge boompjes die achter hem stonden. En zo had hij toch zijn verhaal kunnen vertellen. Ookal begrepen de meesten dit niet. De brandnetel is immers niet bij een ieder zo geliefd. Eerder verkeerd begrepen. Want het prikken is heus niet verkeerd of onaardig bedoeld. Het is een krachtige beschermer. Waarmee het kruid soms ook andere planten om hem heen beschermt. Of het stukje aarde waar het kruid groeit, ongestoord haar gang kan gaan. Want brandnetel waakt en houdt de wacht. Soms is het de brandnetel die je aanraakt, wanneer je misschien op een plek al best wel veel hebt geoogst. Als bewaker van het stukje aarde waar hij staat, laat hij je dit wel even weten. Dan bedank ik de brandnetel voor het geven van dit seintje. Om het kruid vervolgens tevreden achter te laten. Want zijn roep is gehoord. Zo heeft elk kruid een eigen verhaal. Brengt elk kruid wat aan het stukje aarde waar het staat. Brengt elk kruid wat teweeg in onszelf. Om de brandnetel die keer op keer weer verscheen op dezelfde plek. Waar het kruid keer op keer werd weggehaald te bedanken en te eren, vroeg ik of ik het kruid mocht oogsten om zo zijn verhaal te verweven in een kledingstuk. Elke keer als ik de brandnetel top draag. Herinnert de brandnetel mij weer aan zijn kracht. En daarmee aan mijn eigen kracht. De verhalen van de planten kunnen worden aangewakkerd en verspreid in een kledingstuk verbonden met de plant. Als nieuw hoofdstuk van het verhaal. En misschien ontmoet jij of de ander die het kledingstuk ziet de plant dan wel (met een andere blik). Want ook zo kun je de kracht van kruiden ervaren.

Fifty Shades of Yellow 🌼💛 Dyers Garden is coming along nicely. We just need some colour now, and the slugs to leave my baby seedlings alone! I've been pulling out lots of bind weed, thistles, nettles, comfrey and dock leaves which covered this area previously. The whole space has been layered with thick cardboard and about a tonne of wood chip. This is called the "no dig" technique and it's doing a pretty good job at suppressing the unwanted weeds. Well it’s been a while and promising to share more of the journey. Bali was my first stop on my research journey- now almost a month ago. Here I share an amazing red colour made by the mangrove Ceriops tegal and also a little of the work of @threadsoflifebali and their bebali foundation! Mangroves are threatened throughout the world, this dye is from the only source FSC approved of it- from West Papua where unfortunately it is a byproduct of other industries. Threads of Life does work to conserve plant dye ecologies and address sustainability Natural dye is also a means to address environmental conservation. Rising demand for naturally dyed textiles can quickly lead to the scarcity of natural dye materials. Depletion of local forests and loss of diversity in managed gardens threatens subsistence farmers across Indonesia. Only a committed business partner who offers long-term financial security over short-term gain can provide the incentives for sustainable forest management. Threads of Life and its partner organization, the Bebali Foundation, take on that role. With its mesmerizing star-shaped deep blue flowers, Green Alkanet has captivated people since its earliest record in the wild in 1724 and probably even before that. It adorned many a medieval herbal garden and was revered by spinsters and weavers. Bees flock to the blooms which are very pretty but when you delve deeper, you’ll find a treasure trove of uses. The sturdy root yields a red dye, with hints of purple or burgundy under different conditions, making it a cost-effective alternative to true Henna. The root’s red dye, fat-soluble in nature, finds utility in dyeing ointments, oils, and waxes, and were used as a cheap substitute for rouge (blush) and can even be harnessed to craft inks. In herbalism, Alkanet Root is used as incense and is revered for its cleansing properties, often combined with herbs like Thyme or Rosemary to banish negativity and invite abundance. Its dried leaves emit a musky fragrance, serving as a substitute for animal musk. Historically, it was imbibed in wine to alleviate back pain and infused in vinegar for medicinal purposes, even combating leprosy. But tread cautiously, for this botanical marvel harbors alkaloids toxic to the liver, cautioning against regular consumption, especially for those with sensitive livers. It’s a bag! I made this shibori quilted design into a bag. One side stitched shibori on sulfur cosmos dyed fabric hand embroidered with sulfur cosmos dyed embroidery floss. Other side botanically printed and quilted with sulfur cosmos embroidery floss. On the inside fabric was dyed with common reed on one side and botanically printed on the other side. Many hours of dyeing and hand stitching went into this bag. But I loved the time stitching and meditating on the circles of life we weave and how we chose to interact and view the world around us. The pattern for this bag came from the @farmandfolk farm and folk’s book Quit Alchemy. Madder root. Queen of red. I planted a small bed of it in 2022 and they are coming back pretty well. Next year will be its 3rd year and I’ll harvest the roots for color. I was impatiently curious yesterday, pulled this little one out of the ground, and I think they’re doing alright under there. Madder is invasive.
