From a 1970's magazine page ad: Real rare and kind of ironic ad from Rockwell International to promote the way their car trucks were built onto these subway cars for NY Transit. This says the car was made in 1974 and was on the way to Brooklyn to be used in service. This is probably photographed at Coney Island yard. The name Rockwell would be in the news by 1978 and 1979, when Transit discovered many cracks in these same underneath trucks..all kinds of court cases against Rockwell and scandal on how those cars were allowed to be accepted in the first place since they were defective soon after put in service. When NY Transit had to take these cars out of service to fix the trucks, you had different types of cars used as replacements on various lines, such as older R10 cars used on the E & F lines. The R10 cars were supposed to be scrapped by then but had to be kept and used as backup since the R46 cars here needed lots of work to fix up and put back in service. If you were here in NYC those years, maybe you remember that happening. Hard to imagine some of these same R46 cars have been rebuilt and still are used in NYC to this day. From around 1968 into 1969 in the NY subway system, these R27 and R30 cars were repainted from the original dark green/brown color into this brighter cherry red paint. That was a better improvement I think. This red paint color did not last long since from 1970 to 1973, NY Transit was on a mission to repaint all these older cars on letter lines and IRT lines in the silver paint with the navy blue stripe. This photo is on the "N" train entering Stillwell Ave. in Coney Island, last stop just like it was in the 1979 movie "The Warriors". Later in the 1980's when cars like this were repainted into a darker burgundy, they never ran on the N train by then. That was when all those burgundy cars were called "Redbirds" but this earlier paint scheme was more accurate to describe a "Redbird" nickname. From a 1970's magazine ad, some electrical company involved in the building of these R42 subway cars that were recently delivered to the NY Transit system. Notice there are no front rollsigns yet and no actual car number on there that I can determine. Considering this ad talks about air conditioning systems, I think if you rode those cars in the summer, they were reliable for being cool cars and not where it was breaking down a lot. Those R42 cars were rebuilt later around 1988 or so into the 1990's and were good cars I liked to take. Maybe you also have good memories of those cars from the 1970's and 1980's before any were overhauled. (N)o (D)enial Upon a sunny and warm afternoon in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, a Manhattan bound N train operating with a consist of Kawasaki R68A cars can be seen approaching the 25 Avenue station on the BMT West End Line as it has just recently started its trip to Ditmars Boulevard in the Astoria section of Queens. Once the train comes to a complete stop it will pick up and drop off passengers before proceeding to Bay Parkway as it's next stop. Sitting idle next to this N train is a set of Westinghouse R68 cars signed up as D due to it being suspended from Brooklyn for the weekend leading to Q trains running via the D line in both directions between Coney Island and Atlantic Avenue. Manhattan bound N trains were also rerouted via the D line from Coney Island to 36 Street due to track maintenance along the N's normal route. A Brighton Beach bound Q train operating with a consist of Pullman Standard R46 cars can also be seen heading towards its next stop being Avenue U. Due to urgent repairs along the BMT Brighton Line during the midday hours Q trains were not running between Brighton Beach and Coney Island which also caused B trains to not be running between Kings Highway and Brighton Beach. 35 years of service Upon a cold winter day in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, a Brighton Beach bound B train can be seen operating with a consist of Kawasaki R68A cars which is currently bypassing the Avenue H station as it makes its way towards its next stop at Kings Highway. Before this picture was taken there was a small rain shower that had happened which resulted in the ground and the train being wet but afterwards everything dried up when the sun came out of the clouds again. Anyways, 35 years ago today on May 18, 1988 the first R68A subway cars built by Kawasaki had entered service in the subway on the D line.
