Have you HERD? The beloved Nivola Horses are back! Event: Tuesday, May 7th, 6-7 pm. Online. Italian sculptor Costantino Nivola (1911-1988) was known in NYC for his large-scale bas-reliefs, murals, and free-standing sculptural installations. One of his most visible was the herd of 18 cast-concrete horse sculptures he created as part of a landscaped modernist plaza at Stephen Wise Towers between West 90th and West 91st Streets in 1965. (It’s ok if you thought they were llamas…) In 2021 they were unceremoniously cut off from their plaza home and carted away. But these horses did not head into the sunset, never to be seen again. Their story is one of renewal and return, and Landmark West! is excited to have two of the conservators who helped to bring back the Nivola horses, Mary Jablonski and Ed FitzGerald, share the process of researching these public artworks—including a journey to modernist mecca Columbus, Indiana—and the many steps of conservation involved in returning them to their plaza and community. JOIN US for another wonderful event about a slice of UWS and preservation history! Did you know there are TWO ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRALS in Manhattan? You might think of the one on Fifth Avenue across from Rockefeller Center. That one was completed in 1878. The first one, referred to as Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, is in Nolita north of Little Italy. Completed in 1815, Old St. Patrick’s is the oldest Catholic church in New York. Large crowds of Irish and Italian churchgoers prompted the Catholic Church to build the second one uptown. Special to the basilica, Old St. Patrick’s offers tours of its catacombs, the final resting place for many prominent families of New York’s early days. I say go see them both! During your visit, make sure you learn about an incredible man named Pierre Toussaint who is connected to both Cathedrals. . . #iknowaguy #nyc #newyork #newyorkcity #cathedral #cathedrals #stpatricks #stpatrickscathedral #oldstpatrickscathedral #church #nychistory #tour #tourguide #tourguides #takeatour #nyctour #privateguide #privatetour #privatetours #privatetourguide #privatetourguides #walkingtour #guidesofnyc

1910 - Birdseye View Of Times Square From The Times Tower Building. On the left is the Hotel Astor. To the right is The New York Theatre, housing a vast entertainment complex. Invisible from street level, the Hotel Astor’s famous roof garden can be seen here. From spring until autumn, diners could eat al fresco. The New York Theatre’s large sign on the roof lets pedestrians know their prices range from a quarter to a dollar.

It is my dream to own a brownstone in New York, so please buy my book link in my bio, but imagine being able to afford five, and then tear them down to build an even larger home. That’s exactly what happened here on 73rd Street with the construction of the Joseph Pulitzer Mansion. Born in Budapest in 1847, Joseph Pulitzer found his way to the United States during the Civil War, joining a calvary regiment full of Germans. After the war, he ended up in St. Louis and worked for a German language newspaper, the Westliche Post, which he would gain a controlling interest in. All the while he tirelessly studied English and by 1878 he was able to purchase the St. Louis Dispatch. He had a knack for investigating corruption which made him immensely popular and was eventually able to purchase the New York World. He hired Stanford White to design his home on the Upper East Side with heavy inspiration from Venetian palaces. Pulitzer would live here from 1903 until his death in 1911, and his family would continue to own it until the 1930s. There were two attempts to tear it down in the 30s and 50s, luckily both failed. In 1957 it was split into co-ops, from what StreetEasy tells me there are currently 16 different units. The Pulitzer mansion was landmarked as part of the Upper East Side Historic District on May 19th 1981.

For the 7 line historians and train riders, a trip back to around 1980 or 1981 and at 111st station in Corona, Queens. The train yard is one stop away at Willetts Point where Shea Stadium was and now Citifield is. You have a spotless clean silver and blue car 9329 in the middle of other cars that have graffiti on them. I think when they had a clean car in the middle, it's like they dare you to try and write on it since it could be a trap, could be cops or workers ready to jump into action if you have that idea. This is a layup photo I think, since that station is known for middle track layups for the weekends. Even in those days on the repainted silver and blue cars, they still got hit by writers soon after. The car 9683 on the right side was in the original aqua & white World's Fair color pattern. I was told that when cars were fixed to have air conditioning, they were repainted outside so people know what car has A/C...on those single unit R33 cars like 9329, they never had A/C working, only ceiling fans. This was all in service on the 7 line before the bad idea to repaint the entire car fleet in white paint happened. Most train people I know never liked that white paint idea and knew it would not stay for long. If you rode this line from 1963/64 to 2003, those same cars ran there until scrapped. Lots of memories to many Queens train riders and sports fans. If you like more NYC subway history from the 1970's that shows IRT cars, the 7's and more, I recommend the Making All Stops subway book series to enjoy. Send a note to contact and ask about availability based on your mailing location since we have connections to two stores in Europe who have a supply of Book #1 to mail out closer than we can do. Another trip back to Times Square, New York and this time from the late 1950's. Some old buses and taxi cabs always in view. Way more different compared to current day in the same spot. I like older images like this especially in color photos. If you have visited NYC and been in Times Square last couple of decades, you know how much it has been fixed up and changed. Those old buses here in the photo are long gone and many of movie places are some other stores now. Its kind of in an obscure section of #nyc so most people even locals have never seen it. It dates from about 1636. You can see the house in both Winter and Spring. For the vinyl record collectors and train minded historians, did you know about this French music album? From the 1960's and could be like a French language country music style here. The caboose says CN for Canadian National railroad, my guess would be this was in Quebec in Canada since it is a mostly French speaking area of Canada. It can still be elsewhere in Canada since French is like a 2nd language there. It is not a train in France for sure. If you are a guitar buff also, is that a rare guitar he has there? Maybe he was trying to be like the French country equivalent of Johnny Cash since Mr,Cash was known for train related album titles. Very cool retro caboose train image and a singer getting on board to play songs for the workers? Who knows. The idea and photo is nice and anything train related you locate at the record stores or elsewhere, good plan to try and purchase. They don't make covers like that anymore.. If you like more NYC subway history from the 1970's, I recommend the Making All Stops subway book series to enjoy. I’ve been reading this history of the Chelsea Hotel. The building started life as an apartment building. When it became a residential hotel, it became famous for the huge number of famous people who stayed there for long or short stints or passed through its doors regularly. Arthur Miller. Bob Dylan. Dylan Thomas. Andy Warhol. Patti Smith. Janis Joplin. The list goes on and on. It’s led me down a bit of a rabbit hole digging further into some of the names and works I’ve heard about, but didn’t know much about. Now I’ve got some reading to do! And fun fact… I stayed there once about 20 years ago when I came to NYC on a business trip before I moved here. #thechelseahotel #boldfacednames #nychistory #newyorkhistory #nyc #onlyinnewyork #poetsandwriters #pattismith #andywarhol #taylorswift #janisjoplin #torturedpoetsdepartment #bobdylan

I’m in a museum! Yes, it’s basically one sentence, but still! Visit @nyhistory’s new exhibtion “Lost New York” to see landmarks, vistas, pastimes, and communties that once defined our city. I’m featured as a community voice in a piece about businesses that closed during the pandemic. I talk about a lovely afternoon spent with Ryan walking through the East Village, hours before going to @zialf0rd’s Elton John-themed birthday party (evidence in the last photo). Each Friday this May, @nyhistory is celebrating this show with live music and “lost cocktails from Gotham’s bygone days.” The events are free with pay-as-you-wish admission. Illustrations from the Tombs police court in New York City, late 19th century. 🇺🇸 The Tombs, then formally known as New York City Halls of Justice and House of Detention, housed the city's courts, police, and detention facilities. The nickname possibly derived from the original building's Egyptian Revival architectural style. "New York police courts - the Tombs, early morning discharge of the watch" 1886, by Albert Berghaus. I have a new book coming out next year… and a refurbished newsletter! Set in early 1900s NYC, based on real events, No. 10 DOYERS STREET tells the story of a Chinatown gangster, Mock Duck, whose daughter is seized by the authorities. The novel is written from the perspective of a woman journalist from India. (To my surprise, there were South Asians living and working in the US in the 19th and early 20th centuries.) This book has taken a long time to write and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I hope you will consider signing up to my occasional newsletter on substack where I share untold stories about people and places, especially NYC and Mumbai; ephemera I’ve come across; and thoughts about books, movies, and other things. The newsletter is free, and I keep your information private. 1956 & today: Looking east on E 80th St from 5th Ave on the Upper East Side, Manhattan. . Smiling as radiant as ever in the old photo is actress Grace Kelly outside her New York apartment building at 988 5th Avenue. Just a few weeks after the photo was taken, Ms. Kelly would leave the silver screen and the States for good when she married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in one of the most high-profile royal weddings of the 20th century.  . Grace Kelly’s first major film role was in the 1952 western High Noon where she starred alongside Gary Cooper. Next came 1953’s Mogambo with Clark Gable & Ava Gardner. In 1954, aged 25, Kelly won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film The Country Girl. However, Kelly is perhaps best well-known as the leading lady & favorite of director Alfred Hitchock’s famous blonde muses during his golden era. Under Hitchock’s direction, Grace Kelly would star in Dial M for Murder (1954), Rear Window (1954), & To Catch a Thief (1955). Her surprise engagement & marriage to the Prince of Monaco (whom she met in 1955) left a void in Hitchcock’s films which he struggled to fill in subsequent years. In an alternate universe, we might’ve seen Grace Kelly star in Vertigo, North by Northwest, & maybe even Psycho! . Princess Grace would have three children with Prince Rainier III (including Prince Albert II, the reigning Prince of Monaco) & would be active in various charitable organizations throughout the rest of her life. Tragically, she would lose her life as a result of injuries sustained from a car accident after she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at the wheel on Sep. 13, 1982. The princess would die from her injuries the following night at the age of 52. She is buried inside the Cathedral of our Lady Immaculate in Monaco. . . 📸 1956 photo by Lisa Larsen . . . #gracekelly #5thave #80thstreet #uppereastside #oldmanhattan #oldnyc #1950snyc #newyorkhistory #thewaywewere #princessgrace #5thavenue #oldnewyork #nyc1950s #nychistory #vintagenewyork #1950s #princessgraceofmonaco #50s #fifthave #1956 #uesnyc #1950sfashion #nycnostalgia #vintagenyc #princessgracekelly #1950sstyle #nycbeforeandafter

Grand Central Terminal’s story begins in the late 19th century when New York was becoming a railway hub. Railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt opened the Grand Central Depot in 1871, centralizing multiple railways in one monumental hub, symbolizing New York’s emerging cultural and commercial prominence. As travel and the city expanded, so did the terminal’s facilities and significance, leading to the construction of the current Grand Central Terminal which began in 1903 and was completed in 1913. This Beaux-Arts masterpiece, designed to revitalize midtown Manhattan, became the world’s largest train terminal featuring 30 platforms and electrically powered operations—a true testament to innovation and grandeur. Today, Grand Central Terminal stands as a vibrant symbol of New York’s storied past and bustling present. Its iconic celestial ceiling, the Grand Concourse with its famous four-faced clock, and the Whispering Gallery remain ensconced in the fabric of the city, capturing the romance of travel and the beauty of architectural legacy. As a pulsing artery of the city, Grand Central continues to be a destination not just for travelers but also for those drawn to its history and splendor. For anyone traveling or interested in architecture, this terminal is a must-visit, standing as a historical monument where stories of the past meet the journeys of the present. #GrandCentralTerminal #NYCHistory #Travel #RailwayHeritage #ArchitecturalWonder #HistoricLandmarks #NYCIcon #TransportHub #TrainTravel #ExploreNYC #CityBeautifulMovement #ElectricInnovation #CulturalCapital #TravelersDiary #UrbanExploration #HistoricNYC

Do you like old buses and Bronx memories? If so, you would like this one here. Has to be from the 1950's or 1960's, that was not taken in March 1970, that was only a front cover detail for something else. I don't know the bus route or bus type, but the bus is parked right near the Fordham Rd. and 190st subway station. That has to be from the famous 3rd Ave. Elevated line that went up 3rd Ave in service up to last of April 1973. After that day, NYC Transit took down all the stations and replaced the train service with bus service. I talk to many people who are upset that ever happened and still wanted the 3rd Ave line to stay in place. If you like trains, you want the trains to stay and not get torn down. Lots of history along that part of the line up to 1973. This street is a busy shopping area and for the Bronx historians out there who follow our page, maybe you have some good recollections of riding that line before it was closed and maybe you rode on these same older style buses. Take a trip back to the old neighborhood. Taking a trip back to Times Square, New York and this time from the late 1950's. Vantage point here is Broadway and 7 Ave. around 44st. Some old buses and taxi cabs always in view. Way more different compared to current day in the same spot. I like older images like this especially in color photos. Once upon a time, you had these places in business in Times Square. Lots of people stand at this spot to take photos, famous in many ways. If you like more 1970's subway memories of here in NYC, don't forget our subway photo book called "Making All Stops"...send a note to inquire on where to purchase from based on where you are since there are now stores in Europe who can mail you a copy faster than we can from the USA. TULIPS ON PARADE | Tulips are on full display throughout the city and with no better presentation than in multiple spots at Madison Square Park where tastefully intentional curations of the blossoms are at their peak right now. MadSqPark became a public green space in 1686 and acted as a potter’s field in the 1770s. The incredibly attended-to park we experience 250 years later stems (can’t resist a pun!) from a rich history. The likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill’s mother and Edith Wharton grew up in the neighborhood around the park which now surrounds itself with the iconic Flat Iron Building, Metropolitan Life Building and other notable architecture … as well as the original alfresco Shake Shack and Eataly! The area is a feast in every way. | #tulips #madsqpark @madsqparknyc #springinnyc #photorsm #urbanlandscape #lookdown #nychistory #takeawalk #nyclife #manhattanlife #flatirondistrict #nomad

Taking a trip back to Times Square, New York in early 1980s: Vantage point here is Broadway at around 49st. Has a blue Flxible bus right in the middle of the photo. That was the older days before all fixed up and more commercialized to now in 2024. That area right here has been in some movies made at the time and is right where the Broadway shows are, going up to near W.52st and then all the side streets have restaurants and more theaters too. When we do print out Book #2, that will also have some bus photos from the Times Square area. If you like more 1970's subway memories of here in NYC, don't forget our subway photo book called "Making All Stops"...send a note to inquire on where to purchase from based on where you are since there are now stores in Europe who can mail you a copy faster than we can from the USA. “’I Love Lucy’ had just one mission: to make people laugh. Lucy gave it a rare quality. She can perform the wildest, even the messiest physical comedy without losing her feminine appeal. The New York Times asked me to divide the credit for its success between the writers, directors and the cast. I told them, ‘Give Lucy 90% of the credit. Divide the other 10% among the rest of us.’ Lucy was the show. Viv, Fred, and I were just props. Damn good props. But props nevertheless. PS- ‘I Love Lucy’ was never just a title.” - Desi Arnaz The tribute above was written by Desi and read aloud the night Lucy received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1986. Desi died just 5 days before the event. This letter, which he wrote for the occassion, was his final goodbye. In honor of the always hysterical, Lucille Ball, who died 35 years ago yesterday, sunrise at the Hilton in Midtown where Lucy once lived in a duplex. . . . . . . . . . #echoesofoldnewyork #newyorker #nychistory #quotes #nycphotographer #runnyc #nycbuildings #historicnyc #newyorkhistory #oldnyc #oldnewyork #classicnyc #lucy #lucille #lucilleball #ilovelucy #kchonors #kennedycenterhonors #desi #arnaz #desiarnaz #1950s #1950stv #sitcom #classictv #midtown #midtownnyc #hilton #hiltonhotels #midtownmanhattan

Jessie Redmon Fauset’s poem “Rondeau,” was first published in the April 1912 issue of The Crisis, a magazine founded by W. E. B. Du Bois to be the premier crusading voice for civil rights. Jessie Redmon Fauset (April 27, 1882 – April 30, 1961) was an African-American editor, poet, novelist, and educator. In 1912, Fauset began to write for the NAACP’s official magazine, The Crisis, which was co-founded and edited by W. E. B. Du Bois. Fauset became the journal's literary editor in 1919 after several years of contributing poems, essays and reviews to The Crisis. Her role as literary editor allowed her to contribute to the Harlem Renaissance by promoting written work that helped to create an authentic "black voice" in American literature. She introduced then-unknown writers, including Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, and Anne Spencer, to a wider audience in the U.S. In his memoir The Big Sea, Langston Hughes writes, “Jessie Fauset at The Crisis, Charles Johnson at Opportunity, and Alain Locke in Washington were the three people who midwifed the so-called New Negro literature into being. Kind and critical—but not too critical for the young—they nursed us along until our books were born.” W. E. B. Du Bois was a former resident of 409 Edgecombe Avenue. ⁣Learn more about our efforts to preserve the legacy and historical narrative of Harlem, NYC: @edgecombeavenue⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #harlem #edgecombeavenue #blackhistory #sugarhill #africanamerican #nycneighborhoods #jamesweldonjohnson #jessieredmonfauset #blackwriters #blackpoets #blackeditors #blackliterature #harlemhistory #naacp #langstonhuges #nationalpoetrymonth #harlemrenaissance #historicharlem #africanamericanheritage #newyorkhistory #harlemnonprofit #nychistory #harlemnewyork #harlemnyc #whilewearestillhere #wwshnyc

Mulberry Bend, Five Points: once one of the most notorious sites in NYC. When the Bend was demolished in 1897 and replaced by Mulberry Bend Park (now Columbus Park), the leveling of the area was praised as “one of the greatest blessings that could be bestowed on the people of this precinct, as it eradicated one of the worst blocks in the city.” To learn more about the legendary history of Mulberry Bend and Five Points, join us this Sunday, April 28th @ 11:00 AM on our Gangs of New York Walking Tour! The Statue of Liberty was designated a National Monument a century ago, in 1924, and has long served as a national icon. But it has been a personal icon for just as long. 🗽 See the many ways the Statue of Liberty has appeared in tattoos for over a century in our new exhibit “Liberty the Tattooed Lady: The Great Bartholdi Statue as Depicted in Tattooing.” Open now through January 12, 2025. “Liberty the Tattooed Lady” was curated by Michelle Myles of Daredevil Tattoo. 📸 Tattoo artist Bob Shaw at 16 years old. 1942. Photographed and tattooed by Bert Grimm, St.Louis, MO. The Lyle Tuttle Collection. Lady Liberty by Joe and Mabel Darpel. Joe met Mabel when she was working as a knife thrower in the circus and the two tattooed together in the 20s and 30s. Collection of @daredeviltattoo. Statue of Liberty. 1933.
